  • In order to study gross alpha analysis method using LSC, the efficiency tests with uranium standard materials were performed and then compared with the GPC method (US EPA 900.0 method) using 15 groundwater samples. For 15 groundwater samples, the average efficiencies of the GPC and LSC method were 7~11% and 90%, respectively. The average precisions of the GPC and LSC method were 16.16% and 6.00%, respectively. Also, The average standard deviations for 15 samples were 7.38 pCi/L and 2.95 pCi/L, respectively. The determination coefficient of the tested results by two methods was 0.9948. As a result, the LSC method tested in this study was applicable for the screening of the gross alpha and showed the advantages in the gross alpha measurement due to the simple measurement procedures.

  • In this study, priority for groundwater contamination management was assessed based on regional vulnerability in Goyang-si area, Gyonggi-do, Korea using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and geographic information system (GIS). We proposed a concept for regional vulnerability to groundwater contamination with using socio-environmental vulnerability factors, which can be classified into three properties including regional hydrogeological property, contamination property, and groundwater use property. This concept is applied to Goyang-si area. For AHP analysis, an expertise-targeted survey was conducted. Based on the survey, a total of 10 factors (criteria) and corresponding weights for regional vulnerability assessment were determined. The result shows that regional contamination property is the most weighted factor among the three property groups (hydrogeological property: contamination property: groundwater use property = 0.3: 0.4: 0.3). Then, database layers for those factors were constructed, and regional vulnerability to groundwater contamination was assessed by weighted superposition using GIS. Results show that estimated regional vulnerability score is ranged from 22.7 to 94.5. Central and western areas of Goyang-si which have groundwater tables at shallow depths and are mainly occupied by industrial and residential areas are estimated to be relatively highly vulnerable to groundwater contamination. Based on assessed regional vulnerability, we classified areas into 4 categories. Category 1 areas, which are ranked at the top 25% of vulnerability score, take about 2.8% area in Goyang-si and give a high priority for groundwater contamination management. The results can provide useful information when the groundwater management authority decide which areas should be inspected with a high priority for efficient contamination management.

  • In this study, the pump and fertilize (PAF) was applied to reduce nitrogen infiltration into groundwater at three corn cultivation sites over a three-year period, and its effectiveness was evaluated. PAF involves pumping nitrate-contaminated groundwater and using it for irrigation, thereby replacing the need for chemical fertilizers. This method not only substitutes chemical fertilization, but also reduces nitrogen infiltration into groundwater through root zone consumption. To confirm PAF's effectiveness, an equal amount of nitrogen was applied in each cultivation plot, either through chemical fertilizer or irrigation with nitrate-contaminated groundwater. Regular monitoring of infiltrating pore water and groundwater was conducted in each cultivation plot. The linear regression slope for nitrate concentration in the pore water after repeated application of PAF ranged from -3.527 to -8.3485 mg-N/L/yr, confirming that PAF can reduce nitrate concentration in the pore water. With an increasing proportion of PAF, the infiltrating nitrate mass in pore water was reduced by 42% compared to plots fertilized with chemical fertilizer. Additionally, the linear regression slope of nitrate concentration in groundwater was calculated as -2.2999 and -9.2456 mg-N/L/yr. Therefore, continuous application of PAF in rural areas is expected to significantly contribute to reducing nitrate concentration in groundwater.

  • This study investigated the hydrogeochemical and microbiological characteristics of freshwater on Ulleung Island, a volcanic island in the Ulleung Basin on the East Coast of Korea. The shallow groundwater (CSW, NRGW) and the surface water (SISW) samples are classified as Na-HCO3 type, reflecting an alkaline rock type and an oxidizing environment due to the influence of a highly permeable pyroclastic rock layer. In contrast, the deep groundwater sample (DMW) is classified as Ca-HCO3 type, suggesting the influence of deep-sourced carbon dioxide and reducing conditions. Microbial communities in the water samples are generally dominated by Proteobacteria, with the relative abundance of major genera varying depending on water quality and environmental conditions. Network analysis reveals the ecological characteristics of microbial communities adapted to specific environments. The presence of pathogenic genera in the shallow groundwater suggests potential groundwater contamination, necessitating appropriate management to ensure its use as drinking water or domestic water. The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the ecological characteristics of Ulleung Island's groundwater resources and can inform future groundwater management strategies.

  • The purpose of this study was to minimize salt water intrusion into freshwater aquifers and limit the development of freshwater aquifers, by selecting an appropriate excavation depth of in the western coastal area of Jeju Island. The study site was mostly basaltic lava, which was mainly composed of trachy basalt. A vertical logging test was conducted to investigate the vertical distribution of the groundwater and saline groundwater interface in the study well. It was found that freshwater groundwater, saline groundwater, and freshwater groundwater are distributed from the surface to approximately 16 m, 16~50 m, and 50~60 m, below the ground, respectively. In order obtain saline groundwater and minimize the inflow of freshwater into this well, the drilling depth should be limited in the range of 16~50 m from the surface. Thus, saline groundwater well development should be carried out with reference to the measurement results, which depend on the drilling depth and EC (electrical conductivity) obtained with drilling apparatus for geology and ground handling.

  • Groundwater monitoring data from the National Groundwater Monitoring Stations, a total of 320 stations, were analyzed to identify the response of water level and quality to the Odaesan earthquake (M4.9) occurred in January 2007. Among the total of eight stations responded to the earthquake, five wells showed water-level decline, and in three wells, water level rose. In terms of recovery, water levels in four stations had recovered to the original level in five days, but not in the rest four wells. The magnitude of water-level change shows weak relations to the distance between the earthquake epicenter and the groundwater monitoring station. However, the relations to the transmissivities of monitored aquifer in the station with the groundwater change were not significant. To implement the earthquake monitoring system through the groundwater monitoring network, we still need to accumulate the long-term monitoring data and geostatistically analyze those with hydrogeological and tectonic factors.

  • Hydrogeological survey and geochemical analysis were carried out in Phra Yun area, Northeast Thailand, which is a typical salt-affected area for an understanding of hydrogeological groundwater behaviours. Geological survey reveals the presence of G1 and F1 faults. Electromagnetic ground conductivity prospecting shows that the high conductivity zones of 15 mS/cm or more are distributed at underground of the G1 and F1 faults where saline groundwater is discharged. The distribution patterns of tritium concentration show that high tritium concentration zones of groundwater were recharged from pond and river. On the assumption that the annual average tritium concentration of precipitation in Northeast Thailand is same as tritium concentration of precipitation in Tokyo and groundwater flows as piston flow, the age of recharging precipitation of groundwater with 15 TU in 1997 could be estimated at 1967-1970 years. The velocity of groundwater flow was calculated to be $5.3{\times}10^{-7}\;m/s\;and\;2.1{\times}x10^{-6}\;m/s$ respectively from a duration time of 30 years and distance of groundwater flow 500m -2000m from the pond and river to the investigation wells. Because the estimated values of velocity of groundwater flow are compatible with the hydraulic conductivities, it is considered that 30 years is a reasonable period for recharging groundwater.

  • In this study, groundwater flow was analyzed targeting Dae-jeong watershed, which exhibited the largest variations of groundwater levels at the identical elevation points among the 16 watersheds of Jeju Island. The issues of the methods applied in practice were identified and improvement plans were suggested. This groundwater-flow estimates derived by applying hydraulic conductivity values onto zones of equal topographic ground level were found to be quite different from actual measured groundwater flow. Conversely, groundwater-flow estimates that utilized hydraulic conductivity values applied onto groundwater-level equipotential lines indicated relatively lesser divergences from actual measured groundwater flow. The reliabilities of the two approaches were assessed for 60 randomly selected points on DEM (digital elevation model) maps, The method using hydraulic conductivity values applied onto groundwater-level contours turned out to be the more reliable approach for the Dae-jeong watershed in Jeju Island.

  • This study examines groundwater movement system analysis and movement forecast algorithm using finite element method. The target is Cheongha-myeon area, Bukgu, Pohang-city which has many difficulties in water supply during drought period. From the comparison of the differences between obtained values by WINFlOW model and observed values, it is thought that groundwater head distribution under steady flow is reflected well at the level of reliability Groundwater movement of study area shows stable pattern from western watershed to eastern coastal area while flow path is dense and steep in the center of the coastal area. The results of particle tracing for each well show a comparatively straight line from the western boundary side to the observation position at the upper area of the well, and are analyzed as it diffuses according to getting closer to the coast at the lower area of the well. The result of effect circle examination attendant on pumping amount in study area shows variation tendency that groundwater head decreases at the side and the lower area more than at the upper area of the well when groundwater flows from west to east(coast). As mentioned above, satisfactory results of groundwater movement analysis using WINFlOW model, two dimensional groundwater movement analysis model, are obtained through the great decrease of physical uncertainty of groundwater movement system.

  • Saline groundwater was obtained from a 100-m deep basalt layer into which seawater had infiltrated. This groundwater is known to contain various minerals. Like deep seawater, saline groundwater is expected to have various applications due to the presence of biologically beneficial minerals. In Korea, saline groundwater is mainly obtained from the coastal area of Jeju. Before applying saline groundwater to various products, however, its biological safety needs to be examined. In the present study, skin and eye irritation tests were performed to assess the safety of saline groundwater according to the guidelines of the Korea Food and Drug Administration. When compared to control, Jeju saline groundwater showed no level of eye and skin irritation. These results suggest that Jeju saline groundwater induces no irritation, and is therefore sufficiently safe to be applied to the eye and skin of people.
