This paper Presents the Potential gradient characteristics of structure grounding electrode when a test current flows through grounding electrode. In order to analyze the potential gradient of ground surface on structure grounding electrode, the reduced scale model has been used. The potential gradient has been measured and analyzed for types of structure using the hemispherical grounding simulation system in real time. The structures were designed through reducing real buildings and fabricated with four types on a scale of one-one hundred sixty. The supporter was made to put up with weight of structure and could move into vertical, horizontal, rotary direction. When a test current flowed through structure grounding electrodes, ground potential rise was the lowest value at electric cage type(type B). According to resistivity and absorption percentage In concrete attached to structure, the potential distribution of ground surface appeared differently.
This paper analyses the lightning overvoltage with earth of grounding wire and installation types of arresters in double circuits distribution systems. First, the model for analysis is selected severer case between upper line and lower line when the direct lightning surge strikes on the overhead grounding wire. The lightning overvoltage is variously calculated with earth distance between overhead grounding wires. This paper also analyses the effect of the installation distance between arrestors and the earth resistance of overhead grounding wire. From these results, authors examine the rationality of BIL that is applied in distribution system.
This paper presents protection techniques against electric shock in low voltage DC(direct current) grounding systems depending on the analysis of earth fault current paths. Firstly, the comparison between alternating current and direct current on human was conducted, and current threshold values for each current path and for long duration were analyzed. Secondly, the analyses of the earth fault current flows were performed depending on the grounding types and earth fault conditions. Lastly, based on these analyses, adequate protection measures of electric shock depending on low voltage DC grounding types were provided.
This paper deals with the effects of grounding conductors for metal oxide surge arresters. When surge arresters are improperly installed, the results can cause costly damage of electrical equipments. In particular, the route of surge arrester connection is very important because bends and links of leads increase the impedances to lightning surges and tend to nullify the effectiveness of a grounding conductor. Therefore, there is a need to know how effective installation of lightning surge arresters is made in order to control voltage and to absorb energy at high lightning currents. The effectiveness of a grounding conductor and 18 [㎸] metal oxide distribution line arresters was experimentally investigated under the lightning and oscillatory impulse voltages. Thus, the results are as follows; (1) The induced voltage of a grounding conductor is drastically not affected by length of a connecting line, but it is very sensitive to types of grounding conductor. (2) The coaxial cable having a low characteristic impedance is suitable as a grounding conductor. (3) It is also clear from these results that bonding the metal raceway enclosing the grounding conductor to the grounding electrode is very effective because of skin effect. (4) The induced voltages of grounding conductors for the oscillatory impulse voltages are approximately twice as large as those for the lightning impulse voltages.
This paper presents a comparison of experimental value by hemispherical grounding simulation system and calculated value by CDEGS program for ground potential rise of structure. When a test current flowed through structure grounding electrodes, ground potential rise was measured and analyzed for types of structure using the hemispherical grounding simulation system in real time, and was computed by means of CDEGS program. The model structures were designed and fabricated with two types on a scale of one-one hundred sixty. When the experimental data were compared with the theoretical values, the similar profile was shown. Therefore, the confidence of measurement was obtained. The distributions of ground surface potential are dependent on the resistivity and absorption percentage in concrete attached to structure.
Receltly, Underground transmission system is getting increased. Therefore the design of grounding system becomes very important to discharge overcurrent of lightning and fault through earth and reduce sheath induced voltage and sheath circulation current. This paper describes fault current distribution ratio for grounding line with grounding types of normal joint box and sheath grounding resistor at line-to-ground fault of cable.
Since DC ground resistance, which is a good index of the performance of a grounding system in low frequency. does not show the performance in transient state. We measured ground impedances in frequency domain ranging from 0.1 Hz to 900 KHz maximum to quantify the transient grounding performance of 4 types of grounding system. Transfer function was derived from the measured frequency-dependant ground impedance of a grounding grid. A simulation has been performed to verify the transfer function using EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transient Program).
This paper reviews the energy characteristics of oil filled cables in transient state such as grounding fault and lightning surge. Artificial grounding fault test was firstly performed in 2003 for the analysis of arc voltage and breakdown energy according to the fault current. In this paper, energy of OF cable is variously analysed at joint box based on the actual test. Then more various conditions such as installation types, section lengths and CCPU(Cable Covering Protection Unit) connection types are applied for the simulation using EMTP when the single line to ground fault and direct lightning stroke are occurred on actual underground power cable systems and combined power cable systems, respectively. Finally, the energy by the length of crossbonded lead and grounding lead as well as fault lasting time is also calculated using EMTP simulation.
Grounding systems set the reference voltage level of electric circuits and suppress the Ground Potential Rise (GPR) by flowing fault currents to the ground safely. There are several parameters which evaluate the performance of grounding systems as ground resistance, touch voltage and step voltage. The touch and step voltages, which is called "risk voltage", are especially important to ensure the safety of human body. This paper dealt with the influence of current sources with the different frequency components on the touch and the step voltages. Three types of current sources as commercial frequency, square wave, and surge with the fast risetime of $50\;ns{\sim}500\;ns$ were used to analyze the risk voltages in a grounding system. The risk voltages showed remarkable difference in the same current amplitude depending on the current sources, and increased linearly with the current amplitude in the same current source. From the experimental results, it was confirmed that the risk voltages can be evaluated by a small current application in large-scale grounding systems and the possible largest risk voltage can be calculated by a surge current with the risetime of 200 ns or a current source with the same frequency component as the surge current.

This study compares the Residual ultimate longitudinal strength - grounding Damage index (R-D) diagrams produced by two analysis methods: the ALPS/HULL Intelligent Supersize Finite Element Method (ISFEM) and the design formula (modified Paik and Mansour) method - used to assess the safety of damaged ships. The comparison includes four types of double-hull oil tankers: Panamax, Aframax, Suezmax and VLCC. The R-D diagrams were calculated for a series of 50 grounding scenarios. The diagrams were efficiently sampled using the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) technique and comprehensively analysed based on ship size. Finally, the two methods were compared by statistically analysing the differences between their grounding damage indices and ultimate longitudinal strength predictions. The findings provide a useful example of how to apply the ultimate longitudinal strength analysis method to grounded ships.
