  • This paper deals with the frequency-dependent ground impedance of ground grids combined with the carbon ground electrodes. Ground grids are generally valid for multipurpose grounding systems as well as lightning protection systems. The carbon ground electrodes may be supplementarily used to reduce the high frequency ground impedance and to improve the transient response to surge currents. The frequency-dependent ground impedances of ground grids combined with or without the carbon ground electrodes were measured and their simulations with due regard to frequency-dependent soil resistivity were implemented by using EMTP program and Matlab modeling. As a consequence, the ground impedance of ground grids combined with the carbon ground electrodes is significantly reduced when the test current is injected at the terminal of the carbon ground electrode. The measured and simulated data for the test ground grids fairly agree with each other. It was found that the proposed method of simulating the frequency-dependent ground impedance is distinguished. The simulation techniques of predicting accurately the ground impedances without actual measurements can be used in the design of grounding systems based on ground grids and the carbon ground electrodes.

  • This paper presents the transient behaviors of grounding system impedance against lighting impulse currents. The dynamic characteristics of the deeply driven ground rod and grounding grid subjected to the impulse current with various rise time were investigated. It was found that the transient ground impedance strongly depends on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the shapes of impulse currents, and the inductance of grounding electrodes has a significant affect on the transient ground impedance of grounding system in the short time domain.

  • In this paper, carried out for optimal ground system for ensuring safety for electricity used to power equipment in the 20 kHz frequency. Now the grounding system of the mesh electrode, electrode rods are installed for power plant safety and protection against electric shock. However, the electrical equipment grounding system in the 20 kHz were considering the increasing grounding impedance due to the high frequency and the magnetic shielding. But until now, there has been little research on the grounding system. To solve this problem, In this paper was proposed optimal grounding system due to the experiment using a mesh electrode, rod electrode, aluminum plate electrodes. Measurement results, grounding resistance was depending on the material of the electrode grounding resistance. In addition, the leakage current (induced) appeared to be affected depending on the type of electrode.

  • This paper deals with the potential interferences between ground rods. To propose a method for reducing the potential interference caused by grounding electrodes, the theoretical analysis and the reduced scale model tests, which we related to the measurement and computation of ground potential rise and potential interference caused by actual-sized grounding electrodes where current is injected, were carried out. The ground potential rise and potential interference coefficients were measured by using the hemispherical water tank grounding simulator and calculated by CDEGS software as a function of the distance between grounding electrodes. The ground potential rises and potential interference coefficients strongly depend on the distance between grounding electrodes, and the measured results were compared with the computer calculated data and were known in good agreement.

  • Lightning and switching surges propagating through the grounding conductors lead to transient overvoltages, and electronic circuits in information technology systems are very susceptible to damage or malfunction from the electrical surges. Surge damages or malfunctions of electrical and electronic equipment may be caused by potential rises. To solve these problems, it is very important to evaluate the ground surface potential rises and hazardous voltages such as touch and step voltages at or near the grounding systems energized by electrical surges. In this paper, the performance of grounding systems against the surge current containing high frequency components on the basis of the actual-sized tests is presented. The ground surface potential rises and hazardous voltages depending on impulse currents for vertical or horizontal grounding electrodes are measured and analyzed. Also the touch and step voltages caused by the impulse currents are investigated. As a result, the ground surface potential rises, the touch and step voltages near the grounding electrodes are raised and the conventional grounding impedances are increased as the front time of the injected impulse currents is getting faster.

  • This study proposes a newly modified form of existing ground electrodes in order to secure trust of grounding system for large current caused by a stroke of lightning. Proposed planar earth structure has a several needle electrodes around a circular rod and 4 plane electrodes in all directions. The plane electrodes are fused with the insulator on the linear rod, so that they're electrically isolated. The concept is to increase the discharge amount of earth structure using multiple discharge paths like needle and plane electrodes. To check the discharge efficiency of the suggested scheme, the discharge currents are compared with typically used two kinds of ground rods. To ensure accuracy in the measurement of the discharge current, the same material was used for the comparison model. Also, the ground resistance are simulated by CDEGS commercial software and the results are compared with measured data. Based on this kind of experimental study, the suggested ground rod can be used when designing a ground system or when constructing a ground system at the site.

  • This paper deals with the characteristics of potential rise and effective impulse impedance of deep-driven ground rods that are used in high resistivity soil or in confined places such as downtown. Also the effects of the impulse and fault currents on the deep-driven ground rods combined with different type grounding electrodes like as mesh grids and counterpoises are described. The $8/20{\mu}s$ impulse current and other wave currents with different rise times are injected into the test ground rod and the effective impedances are examined. The most effective way to obtain the fine transient impedance behaviors of deep-driven ground rods is to reduce the inductive component of grounding electrode systems combined with other ground electrodes.

  • This paper deals with a comparison of individual and connecting grounding electrode for potential rise. When a test current flowed through grounding electrode, potential rise was measured and analyzed for grounding method using a electrolytic tank in real time. In order to analyze the potential rise of grounding systems, a hemispherical water tank experimental apparatus was studied. Potential rise was measured and analyzed regarding the grounding method and distance by using this apparatus. The apparatus was composed of a hemispherical water tank, AC power supply, a movable potentiometer, and test grounding electrodes. The potential rise was measured by the horizontal moving probe of the potentiometer. The grounding electrodes were designed and fabricated with ground rods on a scale of one-eightieth. Potential rises of individual grounding electrode were higher than those of connecting grounding electrode. The distributions of surface potential are dependent on the distance from grounding electrode.

  • The impulse impedence of grounding system must be accurately evaluated for a safe grounding design. However, a calculation nettled of the impulse impendence of a horizontal grounding electrode has not been established yet. This paper presents a method to compute the impulse impedance of a rod type grounding electrode and deals with the analysis of the transient characteristics on the electrodes.

  • In order to analyze the potential rise of ground surface of grounding grid installed in buildings, the grounding simulator has been designed and fabricated as substantial and economical measures. This paper describes the study of touch and step voltages with grounding grid where earth leakage current is injected. To assess risk voltage of grounding grid, the grounding simulator and CDEGS program were used to obtain measured data and theoretical results of this study. The grounding simulator was composed of an electrolytic tank, AC power supply, a movable potentiometer, and test grounding electrodes. The potential rise was measured by grounding simulator, and the touch and step voltages were computed by CDEGS program. As a consequence, the touch voltage and step voltage above the grounding grid were very low, but were significantly increased near the edge of grounding grid.
