  • This study was conducted to nominate optimal ground cover plants eventually enhancing Aronia production in the highland rolling plains. Total number of 17 weed species were observed in Aronia field when no cover plant was applied. Meanwhile, 12, 14, 15 and 16 weed species were observed when kentucky bluegrass, white clover, rattail fescue and ground ivy were used, respectively. Untreated native weed species were 73.6 cm tall before cut, and kentucky bluegrass, white clover, Rattail fescue and ground ivy were 57.5, 36.8, 48.3 and 40.9 cm, respectively. Based on plant height before cut, two shortest plants, white clover and ground ivy, were considered effective as ground cover plants in Aronia field. Coverage at $3^{rd}$ year by cover plants ranged from 85% to 100%. Coverage of uncovered Aronia field by native weed species was 95% while coverage by 4 treatments, kentucky bluegrass, white clover, rattail fescue and ground ivy were 100, 87, 85 and 100%, respectively. Aronia yield per plant at $3^{rd}$ year was 1,916 g with white clover cover followed by 1,770 g with Rattail fescue, 1,766 g with ground ivy, 1,098 g without cover plants and 931 g with Kentucky Bluegrass. Out results indicated that ground ivy was the best among all treatments based on 3 criteria, (1) short plant architecture, (2) rapid ground covering and (3) better weed control. In addition, ground ivy cover appeared to secure better yield.

  • We have calculated the probability of HBr formation and energy disposal of the reaction exothermicity in HBr produced from the reaction of gas-phase bromine with highly covered chemisorbed hydrogen atoms on a Si (001)-(2 ${\times}$1) surface. The reaction probability is about 0.20 at gas temperature 1500 K and surface temperature 300 K. Raising the initial vibrational state of the adsorbate(H)-surface(Si) bond from the ground to v = 1, 2 and 3 states causes the vibrational, translational and rotational energies of the product HBr to increase equally. However, the vibrational and translational motions of product HBr share most of the reaction energy. Vibrational population of the HBr molecules produced from the ground state adsorbate-surface bond ($v_{HSi}$ =0) follows the Boltzmann distribution, but it deviates seriously from the Boltzmann distribution when the initial vibrational energy of the adsorbate-surface bond increases. When the vibration of the adsorbate-surface bond is in the ground state, the amount of energy dissipated into the surface is negative, while it becomes positive as vHSi increases. The energy distributions among the various modes weakly depends on surface temperature in the range of 0-600 K, regardless of the initial vibrational state of H(ad)-Si(s) bond.

  • Antioxidative and antibacterial activities of endemic plants extracts in Korea were investigated. Hydrogen radical scavenging activity was 99.72% in an elm tree, 99.725 in a Job's tears, 99.575 in an eggplant, and 94.025 in a barrenwort. Antibacterial activity of ethanol extract from 23 different species of wild plants were determined. The gull nut was showed the strongest antibacterial activities (16.0-19.0 mm) and also showed high antibacterial activities in a pine neddles, a gulmyungja, a wild ginger plants, a ginko (9.5-11.5 mm). Only extracts of Saurrranceae extract showed the antibacterial activity in Bacillus subtilus, Stapylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Samonella entetotidis. An antibacterial activities were showed weakly in an esungcho and an eggplant. A ground ivy showed Antibacterial activity on Stapylococcus aureus. A barren wort showed in antibacterial activity on Stapylococcus aureus, and E. coli. This results were suggested that many edemic plants resources contains antioxidative and antibacterial substances.
