It is the challenging task to predict seismic demand for structural design. In current seismic design provisions such as UBC, NEHRP, ATC 3-06, the seismic demand is calculated using the response spectrum with response modification factor (R). This paper investigates variability of seismic demand according to selecting the earthquake ground motion groups. Different Earthquake sets used by Miranda, Riddell and Seed selected were used in this study. Earthquake sets selected by authors include 62 sets of near field ground motion and 19 sets one pulse ground motion. Linear Elastic Response Spectrum (LERS), the variation of performance points of calculated by Capacity Spectrum Method (CSM) were considered with respect to the different sets of earthquake ground motions.
To improve the safety of facilities and human beings when the ground fault occurs, public power utility prescribes the reasonable ground resistances, measures and controls the ground resistance of all the ground electrodes biennially. Concerning the safety of human, there are two safety criteria widely accepted, i.e. the IEEE Std 80-2000 and the IEC 479-1:1994. The IEEE Std 80-2000 is based on a simplified electric shock model usually translated into permissible touch and step voltages. The IEC 479-1:1994 is less specific than IEEE Std 80-2000 for analysis purpose. The IEC 479-1:1994 provides values of permissible body current against electric shock duration. This paper provides a technical study of these two standards to analyze the safety of human beings of ground electrodes developed recently for distribution power system.
This paper proposes technique to detect ground fault in railway high voltage distribution lines. Overcurrent relay technique is widely used for detecting one line ground fault that occurs most frequently in railway high voltage distribution lines. However, ground fault in distribution line is usually high impedance fault with arc. Because the fault current magnitude measured in substation is very small, the conventional overcurrent relay can't detect the high impedance ground fault. Therefore this paper proposes the advanced technique using wavelet transform. It extracts D1 component from fault signals and detects fault comparing magnitude of D1 component in each phase. To evaluate this proposed technique, we model distribution system using PSCAD/EMTDC and extract various fault data. In conclusion this technique can detect ground fault including high impedance fault regardless of fault distance, fault impedance etc.
The 2nd phase of Seoul Subway, Lines 5,6,7 and 8, is in progress. To reduce the surface traffic congestion during construction the greater part of the system has been engineered by bored tunnelling. The current tunnelling methodology is based on the New Austrian Tunnelling Method. Serveral collapses have been reported to date. Most of the collapses took place in the area forwed with soft ground. The modes and causes of the collapses were progressive failures in the unsupported surface and sliding failures due to the unfavourable joint direction. The major causes turned out to be the weakness of ground and the sudden influx of ground water from the surface. Some measures to prevent the failures are also presented. To ensure the safe tunnelling ghrough the soft ground the unsupported excavation area has to be minimized and closed as early as possible. Additional support measures such as supporting core, sealing shotcrete, forepoling, spread footing, face rock bolting and grouting should be employed as well depend on ground conditions.
Current design practice for the prediction of tunnelling-induced ground movements depends on empirical methods, which are based on many assumptions and simplification of the modeling. Some discrepancies between the predictions and the measurements of ground movements regarding adjacent structures are inevitable. In order to investigate tunnel-induced ground movements affect on the settlement of existing structures as well as existing structures affect tunnel-induced ground movement, 2-D elasto-plastic finite element analysis are performed. The following influencing factors such as load of the structures, the width of structures, its bending and axial stiffness, its position relative to the tunnel are considered in the numerical analysis.
Current seismic design provisions such as ASCE 7-10 provide criteria for selecting ground motions for conducting response history analysis. This study is the sequel of a companion paper (I - Ground Motion Selection) for assessment of the ASCE 7-10 criteria. To assess of the ASCE 7-10 criteria, nonlinear response history analyses of twelve single degree of freedom (SDF) systems and one multi-degree of freedom (MDF) system are conducted in this study. The results show that the target seismic demands for SDF can be predicted using the mean seismic demands over seven and ten ground motions selected according to the proposed method within an error of 30% and 20%, respectively
This paper presents the behaviors of transient and conventional grounding impedances of a deep-driven ground rods associated with the injection point of lightning impulse currents. The transient impedance of deep-driven ground rods under lightning impulse currents were higher than the static ground resistance. The transient grounding impedances strongly depend on the injection point and size of grounding electrodes and the rising time of impulse current. Reduction of ground system inductance is an important factor to lightning surge protection.
The ground anchoring has been utilized over 40 years. It is growing the application of the removal ground anchor with tension force for holding earth retaining constructions in the city. It transmits tension stress of prestressed steel wire through grouting to fixed the ground that is of great advantage adjacent ground stability. Nowadays, we can find the compression dispersion anchor on many site. But, it has some problems in behavior of anchors because of impossible to tense p.c strand uniformly under the existing equipment due to different length of p c strand. Hence, motive of this research was to study the application of the newly developed tension system, that analyze and compare with the current anchoring method build on the data of in-site test and laboratory test. As a result, in case of auto back tension system, it became clear that tension pressure was equally distributed among the steal wires but the existing tension system showed sign of instability by indicating stress deflection of about 30% compare with design load. This can cause an ultimate failure of the concentrated p.c strand and a shear failure of ground.
A systematic approach of measurement, modeling and analysis of grounding system impedance in the field of lightning protection systems is presented. The measurement and analysis of ground impedance are based on a computer aided technique. The magnitude and phase of ground impedance were measured and analyzed by the modified fall-of-potential method and the proposed computer program algerian using the waveforms of the test current and potential rise. The theoretical analysis of ground impedance were performed with the equivalent circuit models, and the theoretical results were compared with the measured data.
