Intramolecular Proton Transfers of 2-hydroxy-4,5-naphthotropone

  • The intramolecular proton transfers of 2-hydroxy-4,5-naphthotropone in room temperature solutions are studied using static and time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy. Dual normal and tautomer fluorescence is observed in ethanol solution, while only the tautomer fluorescence is observed in cyclohexane solution. The fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yields in ethanol and cyclohexane solutions indicate that in hydrocarbon solvents, rapid intersystem crossing competes with proton transfer in the first excited singlet state. Transient absorption spectra and kinetics indicate that proton transfer also undergoes in the first triplet state with a transfer time of ∼ 3 ns. No transient absorption from the tautomer ground state indicates a rapid back proton transfer in the ground state.

  • A picosecond transient absorption kinetic spectrometer using a pump-probe method is presented and compared with other methods of picosecond transient absorption measurements. This constructed kinetic spectrometer detects the transient transmittance of sample using a lock-in amplifier as a function of delay time between pump and probe pulses generated from a picosecond mode-locked cw dye laser. Typical transient absorption and ground state bleach recovery kinetic profiles measured with this spectrometer are shown. Excellent kinetic curves of transient absorption or ground state bleach recovery may be obtained at single wavelengths with this spectrometer.

  • The absorption, fluorescence and fluorescence-excitation spectra of concentrated toluene solutions of selected para substituted trans-stilbene derivatives provide strong evidence for aggregation. A red-shifted fluorescence spectrum peaking at 420 nm gains in intensity as the stilbene concentration is increased. The excitation spectrum of this new emission is well to the red of the normal stilbene absorption spectrum, consistent with the appearance of a red shifted shoulder in the UV spectrum. Formation of a fluorescent ground state dimer (or higher aggregate) is proposed to account for these observations. The presence of polar substituents is crucial to the formation of this ground state complex.

Effect of Bamboo Fiber Grinding on the Mechanical, Thermal, Impact, and Water Absorption Properties of Bamboo/Poly(lactic acid) Biocomposites (대나무/폴리락틱산 바이오복합재료의 기계적, 열적, 충격 및 수분흡수 특성에 미치는 대나무섬유 분쇄의 영향)

  • In the present study, bamboo/PLA biocomposites through injection molding process using extruded bamboo/PLA pellets with the fiber contents of 30, 40, and 50 wt% according to the presence and absence of bamboo fiber grinding, respectively, were fabricated and their mechanical, thermal, impact, and water absorption properties were explored. Compared to neat PLA, the flexural modulus, tensile modulus, storage modulus and impact strength of bamboo/PLA biocomposites were considerably increased. In particular, the moduli were further increased by introducing the ground bamboo fibers. In addition, use of the ground bamboo fibers was effective to enhance the long-term water resistance of the biocomposites. The heat treatment temperature of neat PLA was improved by 16% by incorporating the bamboo fibers and the fiber grinding effect was slight. The incorporation of the ground bamboo fibers to PLA did not influence the tensile strength and impact toughness of bamboo/PLA biocomposites.

  • In this paper, we investigated SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) value variation by the position and size of the loop-type ground located in a test mobile handset. We carried out simulations on SAR value with loop-type grounds in rear case of a mobile handset, and obtained results showed that different positions and sizes of loop-type grounds had different SAR values. Among investigated positions and sizes of loop-type grounds, the small size case-C showed the best performance; i.e., it showed a decrease efficiency of 8.70 %. And in this case, it showed the highest induced electric-field distribution in the loop-type ground. In the simulation, the folding angle was set to $160^{\circ}$.

  • A high resolution picosecond absorption kinetic spectrometer utilizing dye emission and a streak camera is presented and compared with other methods of picosecond transient absorption measurements. Typical transient absorption and bleach recovery kinetics measured with this spectrometer are shown. Single wavelength transient absorption or ground state bleach recovery kinetics are determined on the basis of a single laser shot, so that the samples are relatively free frm decomposition by irradiation. Excellent kinetics may be obtained from the near UV to the near IR and are not subject to interference from luminescence of samples. The sensitivity of this spectrometer is very high and it is reasonably easy and convenient to set up and use.

Ultrathin Metamaterial for Polarization Independent Perfect Absorption and Band-pass Filter

  • We demonstrate an ultrathin metamaterial for polarization independent perfect absorption as well as a band-pass filter (BPF) which works at a higher frequency band compared to the perfect absorption band. The planar metamaterial is comprised of three layers, symmetric split ring resonators (SSRRs) at the front and structured ground plane (SGP) at the back separated by a dielectric layer. The perfect metamaterial absorber (MA) can realize near 100% absorption due to high electromagnetic losses from the electric and/or magnetic resonances within a certain frequency band. The thickness of the structure is only 1/28 of the maximum absorption wavelength.

Estimation of the Light Absorption Contribution for Asian Dust and Polluted Particles at Gosan, Jeju during the Asian Dust Episode in the Spring 2011 (2011년 봄 황사시기 제주도 고산에서의 황사와 오염입자의 광흡수 기여도 산정)

  • Ground-based in-situ measurements of aerosol optical properties at Gosan climate observatory have been analyzed to investigate the optical contribution of Asian dust and polluted particles on light absorption in springtime 2011. During the Asian dust episode, the contribution of Asian dust particle to aerosol absorption coefficient estimated about 45% at 370 nm and about 23% at 520 nm. Especially, black carbon in dust plume contributes about 48% to aerosol light absorption at 520 nm since the airmass are transported from the Gobi and inner Mongolia deserts, and this airmass comes across the northeastern coast of China, near the Shandong Peninsula. In pollution case, the contributions of dust particle and black carbon to aerosol absorption coefficient estimated about 41% and 11% at 370 nm, respectively. However, pollution case shows the highest light absorption of 48% for brown carbon at 370 nm, which indicates the significantly high mass concentration of organic carbon ($6.3{\pm}2.2{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$) in pollution plume can contribute to the increase of light absorption at near-UV spectral region.

  • Molecules always show broad absorption band envelopes, and this results from the vibrational properties of bonds. The width of an absorption band can have an important influence on the color of a dye. A narrow band imparts a bright, spectrally pure color to the dye, whereas a broad band can give the same hue, but with a much duller appearance. Typically, half-band widths of cyanine dyes are about 25nm compared to value of over 50nm for typical merocyanine dyes. Thus, cyanine dyes are exceptionally bright. The factors influencing the width of an absorption band can be understood with reference to the Morse curves. The width of the absorption band depends on how closely the bond order of the molecules in the first excited state resembles that in the ground state. We have quantitatively evaluated the "molecular structure-absorption band shape" relationship of dye molecules by means of Pariser-Parr-Pople Molecular Orbital Method(PPP-MO).

Growth Response and Absorption Capacity of Poplars on Livestock Waste Water (축산폐수(畜産廢水) 처리(處理)에 따른 포플러류(類)의 생육반응(生育反應) 및 축산폐수(畜産廢水) 흡수능력(吸收能力))

  • The two-month-old rooted-cuttings of Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa, P. euramericana and P. nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii clones were exposed to livestock waste water - one of major water pollutants, and ground water in order to determine the effects of livestock waste water on growth response and absorption capacity of the species. For this purpose, 5 clones of each species were used. In all the species, the height growth of rooted-cuttings was better in livestock waste water treatment than in ground water. Of all the poplar species compared, the height growth was best in P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa. In the cases of P. euramericana and P. nigra ${\times}$ maximowiczii, the height growth in the livestock waste water treatment was statistically different among clones, whereas there was no significant difference among P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa clones. Aboveground biomass such as leaf and shoot dry weight of all the species increased in the livestock waste water treatment, while root dry weight decreased. In addition, chlorophyll contents in leaf of all the poplar species increased in the livestock waste water treatment. All the poplar trees showed temporal variation in the absorption amount of livestock waste water during the experimental period. In all the poplar species, the absorption amount of livestock waste water was less than that of ground water. Of 3 poplar species, P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa was best in the absorption capacity of livestock waste water. Of all 15 poplar clones compared in this study, the 72-16 clone of P. alba ${\times}$ glandulosa showed the best absorption capacity.
