  • Helicopter-borne FMCW radar altimeter obtains the altitude information using the beat frequency between the transmitted and reflected signal from the nadir direction. However, the altitude error may exist when the strong echoes are received from the large RCS at the off-nadir direction because of the wide beamwidth of the altimeter antenna. In this paper, in order to investigate the effect of the altitude error due to the large RCS around the off-nadir direction, the reflected signals were measured by using the corner reflectors displaced on the several reference ground positions, and the acquired signals were analyzed and compared in the spectral domain. The analysis results can be used for the improvement of the altitude accuracy in the radar altimeter.

  • When a target locates at low altitude over a curved earth surface and far away from a radar, we examine the accuracy of the conventional formulations to compute the radar echo signal. The 4-ray model is used to calculate the scattering by the target to consider the ground plane effect. In this paper, the diffracted wave is not included. Based on the required parameters able to be calculated by known equations for the estimation of the wave propagation phenomena, the radar echo signal is computed and verified by comparing with measured data sets.

  • Landslide in Korea occurs generally in summer, and rainfall is a major factor to trigger landslides. This study evaluates the applicability of radar rainfall to estimate landslide occurs locally in mountainous area. Temporal changes in spatial distribution of rainfall is analyzed using radar data, and the characteristics of rainfall in landslide area during the landslide occurred in Inje, July 2006. This study shows radar rainfall field can estimate local landslides more precisely than the rainfall data from ground gauges.

  • The UHF band wind profiler radars of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), which produces the vertical profile of the wind, need to be calibrated for better performance. The capabilities of the radar in detecting even light precipitation were used for the calibration of which reference takes the hourly series of ground rainfall rate measured by a rain gauge at the radar site. This calibration must be renewed regularly according to the methodology implemented in this work since errors occur on the wind vectors in the clear sky without reflectivity calibration. Comparing the wind by wind profiler with that by radiosonde, the optimal radar constant contributed to the improvement of wind accuracy.

  • In this paper, we developed a mid-range automotive radar systems based on the performance requirements and test procedures of the intelligent transport systems, that is lane change decision aid systems (LCDAS). The mid-range automotive radar has the maximum detection range up to 80m and an update time within 50ms. The computational loads of a signal processing were reduced by using ROI preprocessing technique. Considering actual driving environments, radar performance evaluations were conducted in two driving scenarios at an automotive proving ground.

  • In this study, continuous long-term observation is implemented with an ocean radar. Ocean radar conducts remote observation (combined) with ground-based radars, which enable a series of simultaneous observations of an extensive range of the coast with high frequency. An ocean radar for continuous long-term observation is operated at Samcheok on the east coast of Korea. Samcheok experienced tsunami damage in recent years and is the location of a nuclear power plant. In order to examine the reliability of the ocean radar, a pressure-type wave gauge, ultrasonic wave gauge, and ocean buoy are installed for the purpose of data comparison and verification. The ocean radar used in this study is an array-type HF-RADAR named WERA (WavE RAdar). The analysis of the data obtained from continuous long-term observations showed that the radar observations were in agreement with more than 90% of the wave data collected within a 25 km range from the center of two sites. Less than 1% of the entire observation data was unmeasured by the time series analysis. As a result of comparing the radar data with the direct observations made by the wave gauge, it was inferred that the RMS deviation is less than 20cm and the correlation coefficient was in the range of 0.84 ~ 0.87. Moreover, supported by such observations, a comprehensive monitoring system is being developed to provide the public with real-time reports on waves and currents via the internet.

  • In modern society, as to the underground urban infrastructure facilities(communication electricity water and sewage gas etc.) were contained many risks because of excavating. The exact position of underground facilities and the attribute information should be built in order to prevent accidents. As the result of analyzing the public surveying results from 2004 to 2009, it shows that low detecting rate of water pipeline which is only 52.4%, because the exploration of electromagnetic induction only detect metal pipeline and positioning survey only detect new pipeline before burying. Therefore development and verification of the correct and efficient exploration techniques are needed to improve the detecting rate. In this study, determined based on the location measurement results for the non-metal pipes and metal pipes before burial. It was compared with values that obtained through the ground penetrating radar and electromagnetic induction detecting. As a result, detecting rate of the concrete section showed a 100%, unpaved section showed a 94.7%, asphalt section showed 60%. So it confirmed the applicability of the ground penetrating radar at underground facilities detecting.

  • We investigated the weathering characteristics of On-Yang gneiss by means of geological survey and Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR). The results of geological survey and boring show the two sets of vertical joint and horizontal joint developed by foliation which is composed of salic and melanic layers. GPR section evidently shows foliation direction and differential weathering due to discontinuity and mineral composition of metamorphic rock. The GPR section for instantaneous phase attribute based on complex trace analysis evidently shows continuity and foliation direction of metamorphic rock. The strong reflection amplitude which is derived from the banded structure of weathered rock can be incorrectly interpreted as a reflection of bedrock. The depth of rock basement should be estimated from the overall exploration result such as boring, seismic method, and electrical resistivity method.

  • PURPOSES : The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between the dielectric characteristics of asphalt mixtures and the air voids present in them using ground penetrating radar (GPR) testing. METHODS : To measure the dielectric properties of the asphalt mixtures, the reflection coefficient method and the approach based on the actual thickness of the asphalt layer were used. An air-couple-type GPR antenna with a center frequency of 1 GHz was used to measure the time for reflection from the asphalt/base layer interface. A piece of aluminum foil was placed at the interface to be able to determine the reflection time of the GPR signal with accuracy. An asphalt pavement testbed was constructed, and asphalt mixtures with different compaction numbers were tested. After the GPR tests, the asphalt samples were cored and their thicknesses and number of air voids were measured in the laboratory. RESULTS : It was found the dielectric constant of asphalt mixtures tends to decrease with an increase in the number of air voids. The dielectric constant values estimated from the reflection coefficient method exhibited a slight correlation to the number of air voids. However, the dielectric constant values measured using the approach based on the actual asphalt layer thickness were closely related to the asphalt mixture density. Based on these results, a regression equation to determine the number of air voids in asphalt mixtures using the GPR test method was proposed. CONCLUSIONS : It was concluded that the number of air voids in an asphalt mixture can be calculated based on the dielectric constant of the mixture as determined by GPR testing. It was also found that the number of air voids was exponentially related to the dielectric constant, with the coefficient of determination, $R^2$, being 0.74. These results suggest that the dielectric constant as determined by GPR testing can be used to improve the construction quality and maintenance of asphalt pavements.

  • CALVAL (Calibration & Validation) shall consider payloads characteristics because satellites have one and/or several payloads in order to perform their various missions. SAR satellite, one of various satellite, shall need to use special ground targets, which can reflect the radar signal to the satellite, because it can see objects with reflected radar signal. Therefore, the special ground targets, which are called generally reflector(corner reflector is the one of them) shall be installed and constructed on the ground path. The satellite must access the targets on that path. To accomplish successful calibration, the CALVAL site including corner reflectors will be surveyed and analyzed using various environment characteristics. In this paper, CALVAL site including point targets(corner reflector) for absolute radiometric calibration except one including distributed targets for relative radiometric calibration has been deeply considered.
