Sericite was ground with or without additives (LiNO3 or TiO2) using a planetary mill. The resultant ground products included the average particle size of 2-3 ㎛ (sericite only or sericite+LiNO3) and 0.5-0.6 ㎛ (sericite+TiO2) were obtained within 10 minutes of grinding time. respectively. In the grinding of the sericite without any addictive, the particle size initially decreased, but, as grinding time elapsed thereafter, agglomerates were formed and D50 increased over 10 ㎛. In contrast, when the additive was added, the particle size decreased as the grinding time elapsed and any aggregation was relatively not noticeable, compared with the grinding of the sericite only. As a result of measuring the zeta potential for the raw or the ground samples, variation of the zeta potential values according to pH at the early stage of the grinding with the addictives was gentler than that at the final stage of grinding, which showed the relatively similar trend to the pH-zeta potential correlation in grinding of raw sericite. In addition, as a result of the disintegration experiment through ultrasonic excitation, D50 decreased rapidly only until the disintegration time of about 50 minutes.
This paper will present hybrid tests to a one bay-one story steel frame structure under ground excitation. A structure used in this paper for hybrid test, to evaluate performance and behavior, is divided into two models; one is numerical model with one column element, and a truss or a beam element, the other is physical substructural model with one beam-column element. All tests considered one or three degrees of freedom to implement real-time hybrid test, and two control algorithms to control hardware are used; one using MATLAB/Simulink, the other using OpenSees, OpenFresco and xPCTarget. In addition, for real-time data communication between numerical and physical substructural models SCRAMNet was used. The results of hybrid tests were compared with one of numerical analysis of numerical model with fiber force-based beam-column elements using OpenSees. Real-time hybrid tests were implemented for the validation of control system with simple structure, and then it will be extended to hybrid test for higher nonlinear or complex structure later on.
In comparison with the existing static reliability analysis methods, the dynamic reliability analysis(DyRA) method is more suitable for estimating the failure probability of a structure subjected to earthquake excitations because it can take into account the frequency characteristics and damping capacity of the structure. However, the DyRA is known to have an issue of numerical stability due to the uncertainty in random sampling of the earthquake excitations. In order to solve this numerical stability issue in the DyRA approach, this study proposed two earthquake-scale factors. The first factor is defined as the ratio of the first earthquake excitation over the maximum value of the remaining excitations, and the second factor is defined as the condition number of the matrix consisting of the earthquake excitations. Then, we have performed parametric studies of two factors on numerical stability of the DyRA method. In illustrative example, it was clearly confirmed that the two factors can be used to verify the numerical stability of the proposed DyRA method. However, there exists a difference between the two factors. The first factor showed some overlapping region between the stable results and the unstable results so that it requires some additional reliability analysis to guarantee the stability of the DyRA method. On the contrary, the second factor clearly distinguished the stable and unstable results of the DyRA method without any overlapping region. Therefore, the second factor can be said to be better than the first factor as the criterion to determine whether or not the proposed DyRA method guarantees its numerical stability. In addition, the accuracy of the numerical analysis results of the proposed DyRA has been verified in comparison with those of the existing first-order reliability method(FORM), Monte Carlo simulation(MCS) method and subset simulation method(SSM). The comparative results confirmed that the proposed DyRA method can provide accurate and reliable estimation of the structural failure probability while maintaining the superior numerical efficiency over the existing methods.
The aircraft vertical acceleration from the excitation of the road surface in the taxing mode is a main factor with a negative effect on the boarding quality of pilots and passengers. In this paper, we propose an appropriate control method to improve the boarding quality of the MR damper landing gear. The proposed control method is Skyhook Control Type 2, which feeds the aircraft vertical acceleration back in addition to the aircraft vertical velocity. Since Skyhook Control Type 2 factors the velocity and acceleration of the upper mass, it can be expected to exceed the control performance of the existing Skyhook Control that factors only the upper mass velocity. For the simulation, the bumper type road surface was selected as a ground surface, and the landing gear model constructed with RecurDyn and the controller designed with Simulink were co-simulated. The control effect of Skyhook Control Type 2 was verified by comparing and analyzing the RMS and maximum value of the upper mass acceleration according to the taxing speed and control method.
The structural dynamic behavior and yield strength considering both ductility and strain rate effects are analyzed in this article. For the single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system, the relationship between the relative velocity and the strain rate response is deduced and the strain rate spectrum is presented. The ductility factor can be incorporated into the strain rate spectrum conveniently based on the constant-ductility velocity response spectrum. With the application of strain rate spectrum, it is convenient to consider the ductility and strain rate effects in engineering practice. The modal combination method, i.e., square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) method, is employed to calculate the maximum strain rate of the elastoplastic multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) system under uniform excitation. Considering the spatially varying ground motions, a new response spectrum method is developed by incorporating the ductility factor and strain rate into the conventional response spectrum method. In order to further analyze the effects of strain rate and ductility on structural dynamic behavior and yield strength, the cantilever beam (one-dimensional) and the triangular element (two-dimensional) are taken as numerical examples to calculate their seismic responses in time domain. Numerical results show that the permanent displacements with and without considering the strain rate effect are significantly different from each other. It is not only necessary in theory but also significant in engineering practice to take the ductility and strain rate effects into consideration.
Nowadays, there are a great number of various structures that have been retrofitted by using different FRP Composites. Due to this, more researches need to be conducted to know more the characteristics of these structures, not only that but also a comparison among them before and after the retrofitting is needed. In this research, a model steel structure is tested using a bench-scale earthquake simulator on the shake table, using recorded micro tremor data, in order to get the dynamic behaviors. Beams of the model steel structure are then retrofitted by using CFRP composite, and then tested on the Quanser shake table by using the recorded micro tremor data. At this stage, it is needed to evaluate the dynamic behaviors of the retrofitted model steel structure. Various types of methods of OMA, such as EFDD, SSI, etc. are used to take action in the ambient responses. Having a purpose to learn more about the effects of FRP composite, experimental model analysis of both types (retrofitted and no-retrofitted models) is conducted to evaluate their dynamic behaviors. There is a provision of ambient excitation to the shake table by using recorded micro tremor ambient vibration data on ground level. Furthermore, the Enhanced Frequency Domain decomposition is used through output-only modal identification. At the end of this study, moderate correlation is obtained between mode shapes, periods and damping ratios. The aim of this research is to show and determine the effects of CFRP Composite implementation on structural responses of the model steel structure, in terms of changing its dynamical behaviors. The frequencies for model steel structure and the retrofitted model steel structure are shown to be 34.43% in average difference. Finally, it is shown that, in order to evaluate the period and rigidity of retrofitted structures, OMA might be used.

Dynamic responses of a multi-span simply supported bridge are investigated to examine the effect of bearing damage under seismic excitations. The damaged bearings are modeled as sliding elements with friction between the superstructure and the top of the pier. Various values of the friction coefficients are examined to figure out the effect of damaged bearings with various levels of peak ground accelerations. It is found that the global seismic behaviors are significantly influenced by the occurrence of bearing damage. It should be noticed that the most possible location of unseating failure of superstructures differs from that in the bridge model without considering the bearing damage. It can be concluded that the bearing damage may play the major role in the unseating failure of a bridge system, so that the damage of bearings should be included to achieve more rational seismic safety evaluation.
High-frequency electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation associated with borehole ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a complicated phenomenon. To improve the understanding of the governing physical processes, we employ a finite-difference time-domain solution of Maxwell's equations in cylindrical coordinates. This approach allows us to model the full EM wavefield associated with crosshole GPR surveys. Furthermore, the use of cylindrical coordinates is computationally efficient, correctly emulates the three-dimensional geometrical spreading characteristics of the wavefield, and is an effective way to discretise explicitly small-diameter boreholes. Numerical experiments show that the existence of a water-filled borehole can give rise to a strong waveguide effect which affects the transmitted waveform, and that excitation of this waveguide effect depends on the diameter of the borehole and the length of the antenna.

Site soil condition affects significantly on the seismic response of a structure and is a critical factor for the performance based seismic design of a structure. In this paper, the effects of nonlinear soil properties on the elastic response spectra of a structure including the nonlinearity of a soil due to the earthquake excitation is investigated using one step finite element approach for the entire soil structure system and approximate linear iterative procedure to simulate the nonlinear soil behavior with the Ramberg-Osgood soil model. Studies were carried out for a linear SDOF system of a variable period with and without a pile group for the 1940 CI Centro earthquake recorded on ground rather than rock. The study results showed clearly that the effect of the nonlinear behavior of soft soil is very important on the elastic seismic response of a structure suggesting the necessity of the performance based seismic design.

We have attempted to give some physical into the factors that control the response of subsurface target to plane wave excitation at VLF (very low frequency) frequencies. Although the VLF technique has some serious disadvantages, such as a lack of penetration depth and limited frequencies, its advantages are also extremely important to have made it by far the most popular electromagnetic technique in current use. In the magnetic-field measurement mode these lightweight, relatively low-priced tools allow us to survey large areas rapidly and inexpensively, to locate and roughly define subsurface electrical conductors. When used in the electric-field mode the technique is, in simple environments, capable of quantitative interpretation and once again the speed and relative cheapness of these devices makes them a natural 'first electromagnetic tool ' to use in reconnaissance mapping.
