  • The grout-effect evaluation of the ground reinforcement technique, which has been widely applied to civil engineering and construction fields, is not established for the guidelines of choosing the efficient evaluation method, and in fact the experts have little effort to determine the reinforcement effect quantitatively. The evaluation of the grout was carried out by experiments on core specimen and drilling, which is impossible to evaluate grout-reinforcement effect quantitatively. This paper presents an example on verification of FRP grout-effect using geophysical prospecting on ground surface, which is 2D resistivity survey that easily visualize survey results with color graphics and seismic refraction method that interprets the subsurface seismic velocity structure.

  • The electrical resistivity methods have been commonly used for figuring out the ground layers. The purpose of this paper, differently from previous methods, is not only to figure out the layers but also to develope a equipment and a method to analyze ground porosity. Equipment has a shape of cone, which can be coupled with drilling rods. A field penetration test was performed to test application in Incheon Chungla area. Through the field test soil resistances were measured. To calculate soil porosity along the depth, Archie's law is applied. The results show that a new equipment and porosity analysis method using Archie's law can distinguish soil layers and precisely measure soil porosity.

  • As housing supply ratio has become over 100%, the strategic vision of government's policies has been changed from new construction to maintenance and regeneration of old architectural-structures. This fact has brought a light on the reconstruction and remodeling industries and a need for retrofit and rehabilitation techniques of existing foundation. Various methods of foundation for architectural-structures do exist. Among them, micropiling technologies are increasingly applied in foundation rehabilitation and seismic retrofitting projects. Micropiling techniques provide environmental-friendly methods for minimizing disturbance to adjacent structures, ground, and the environment. The installation is possible in restrictive area and general ground conditions. The fact that the installation procedures cause minimal vibration and noise and require very low ceiling height makes the micropiling methods to be commonly used for underpin existing structures. Specialized drilling equipment is often required to install the micropiles for existing basement facilities. This paper presents a case study in which micropiles were constructed to support a superstructure for vertical extension of existing elevator core and provide accessibility to underground parking lot. It is intended to become useful reference for the similar remodeling project.

  • This is a comparative study on the characteristics of excavated soils, which is proceeded using soil strength parameter by literature, geotechnical investigation, standard penetration test by drilling, and downhole test by borehole at six sites in urban areas. The results of these site surveys are used as basic data for the evaluation and development of prediction of ground subsidence risk. Geotechnical properties are estimated with the result of standard penetration test-N value and literature. The dynamic geotechnical characteristics are also estimated with top-down seismic exploration at borehole.

  • Anomalies and/or fractured grounds not detected by the surface geophysical and geological survey performed during design stage may cause significant problems during tunnel excavation. Many studies on prediction methods of the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face have been conducted and applied in tunneling construction sites, such as tunnel seismic profiling and probe drilling. However, most such applications have focused on the drill and blast tunneling method. Few studies have been conducted for mechanized tunneling because of the limitation in the available space to perform prediction tests. This study aims to predict the ground condition ahead of the tunnel face in TBM tunneling by using an electrical resistivity tomography survey. It compared the characteristics of each electrode array and performed an investigation on in-situ tunnel boring machine TBM construction site environments. Numerical simulations for each electrode array were performed, to determine the proper electrode array to predict anomalies ahead of the tunnel face. The results showed that the modified dipole-dipole array is, compared to other arrays, the best for predicting the location and condition of an anomaly. As the borehole becomes longer, the measured data increase accordingly. Therefore, longer boreholes allow a more accurate prediction of the location and status of anomalies and complex grounds.

  • In the seismic retrofitting of harbor breakwaters in Korea, the recovery rate is often uncertain due to site conditions and site conditions, and problems continue to arise. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the recovery rate and compressive strength of the improved material through drilling survey by grouting confirmation method after applying low-fluidity mortar injection method, and furthermore, we checked the elastic modulus by downhole test and tomography to confirm the reinforcement effect of soft ground after ground improvement. The experimental results showed that the average shear wave velocity of the ground increased from 229 m/s to 288 m/s in BH-1 and BH-3 boreholes to a depth of 28.0 m, and the average shear wave velocity of the ground to a depth of 30.0 m tended to increase from 224 m/s to 282 m/s in the downhole test. This is believed to be a result of the increased stiffness of the ground after reinforcement. The results of the tomographic survey showed that the Vs of the soft ground of the sample at Site 1 increased from 113 m/s to 214 m/s, and the Vs of the sample at Site 2 increased from 120 m/s to 224 m/s. This shows that the stiffness of the ground after seismic reinforcement is reinforced with hard soil, as the Vs value satisfies 180 m/s to 360 m/s in the classification of rock quality according to shear wave velocity.

  • Recently, the construction of the several highway bridges in the karst area have encountered severe problems associated with cavities and sinkholes. To solve this problems, it is important to understand the distribution characteristics of cavities in the construction site on limestone area. This paper briefly describes the different types, the distribution control factors and the infill sediment types of lime-cavities in the study area, bridge site in the karst area and propose the effective method of survey design. Cavity system may be divided into two main groups, 1)'slot and cave system'and 2)'sinkhole and cave system'. And the shape, the size and the distribution pattern of cavity are controlled by three main factors - rock type, geological structure and ground water condition. Additionally, infill sediment may be considered as one of the important design factors for foundation design and divided into four types by sediment properties. There are geophysical thechnics and geologic survey and drilling test, etc. by the survey method to interpretate characteristics of cavity system, and this methods are optimally designed at the site investigation stage.

  • Geothermal heat exchanger(GHEX) is a major component of Geothermal heat pump system(GSHPs). In Common, We use the vertical type GHEX in Korea. But vertical type GHEX needs a high cost for installation, because of drilling the hole which has 200m depth at max. So, We suggest the use of horizontal type GHEX. When we construct buildins, We excavate the ground and we can install the horizontal type GHEX at the excavated underground. It's very cheap and convenient method compare to vertical type GHEX installation. This study is peformed to estimate the peformance of horizontal type GHEX and to analyze effects of heat exchanger types and undergroundwater. As the result, slinky type GHEX has a 66% efficiency compare to vertical type GHEX and mat type has a 201% efficiency at the undergroundwater zone.

  • Geophysical survey for unconformity-type uranium deposit applied to this study area in Athabaska Basin, Canada were carried out airborne TEM and magnetic, resistivity-induced polarization (DC-IP), puser seismic reflection and well-logging method. The results of airborne survey interpreted the lithological boundary, geological structures, and conductors. Also, these results decided to main targets for ground DC-IP survey. The Low resistivity and the high chargeability slices of 3D modeling interpreted from DC-IP survey response for conductors related to hydrothermal alteration zones and fault-controlled graphitic zones occurring at the unconformity-type uranium deposit, and they confirmed by diamond drilling. Seismic results interpreted to lake bottom surface, alluvium layer and intra-sandstone faults. We suggest the resonable field data acquisition of DC-IP method on the land or the lake in Athabaska Basin.
