  • This study evaluates the seismic fragilities in fill slopes in South Korea through parametric finite element analyses that have been barely investigated thus far. We consider three slope geometries for a slope of height 10 m and three slope angles, and two soil types, namely frictional and frictionless, associated with two soil states, loose and dense for frictional soils and soft and stiff for frictionless soils. The input ground motions accounting for four site conditions in South Korea are obtained from one-dimensional site response analyses. By comparing the numerical modeling of slopes using PLAXIS2D against the previous studies, we compiled suites of the maximum permanent slope displacement (Dmax) against two ground motion parameters, namely, peak ground acceleration (PGA) and Arias Intensity (IA). A probabilistic seismic demand model is adopted to compute the probabilities of exceeding three limit states (minor, moderate, and extensive). We propose multiple seismic fragility curves as functions of a single ground motion parameter and numerous seismic fragility surfaces as functions of two ground motion parameters. The results show that soil type, slope angle, and input ground motion influence these probabilities, and are expected to help regional authorities and engineers assess the seismic fragility of fill slopes in the road systems in South Korea.

  • In this work, a fishbone-type transmission line employing a comb-type ground plane (FTLCGP) was fabricated on polyethersulfone (PES) substrate, and its RF characteristics were thoroughly investigated. According to the results, it was found that the FTLCGP on PES showed periodic capacitance values much higher than other types of transmission lines due to a coupling capacitance between the signal line and ground, which resulted in a reduction of wavelength and line width. Using the theoretical analysis, we also extracted the bandwidth characteristic of the FTLCGP on PES. According to the result, the FTLCGP structure showed a cut-off frequency of 280 GHz.

  • Outdoor experimental study is presented the insertion loss caused by barrier considering discontinuous ground condition. Measurements ware made in 1/3 octave band over the frequency range 315 Hz~3150 Hz with the various geometry of the source, receiver and barriers. The frequency range of the interference pattern depends on the phase difference between path from the edge of barrier to receiver, and hence on the acoustical properties of the ground on the receiver side of the barrier. The insertion loss by barrier, in addition to diffraction, is shown to be dependent on the ground characteristic.

  • A highly miniaturized on-chip $180^{\circ}$ hybrid employing periodic ground strip structure (PGSS) was realized on a silicon radio frequency integrated circuit. The PGSS was placed at the interface between $SiO_2$ film and silicon substrate, and it was electrically connected to top-side ground planes through the contacts. Owing to the short wavelength characteristic of the transmission line employing the PGSS, the on-chip $180^{\circ}$ hybrid was highly miniaturized. Concretely, the on-chip $180^{\circ}$ hybrid exhibited good radio frequency performances from 37 GHz to 55 GHz, and it was 0.325 $mm^2$, which is 19.3% of a conventional $180^{\circ}$ hybrid. The miniaturization technique proposed in this work can be also used in other fields including compound semiconducting devices, such as high electron mobility transistors, diamond field effect transistors, and light emitting diodes.

  • The high pressure jet grouting method is mainly used in the grouting. But, this method has problems that the scale and strength of improved body is not constant with ground condition. Considering these problems, triple rod MJM that results in the high-strength effect by the technology of the injected ${\phi}7mm$ cement mortar was developed. In this MJM, the unconfined strength is estimated with the various combination ratio and engineering characteristic, strength improvement effect of improved body, was checked through the field test. It is known that the application of MJM was verified with ground and construction condition.

  • In this paper the settlement characteristic of shallow foundation on sandy soil overlained by rigid ground was investigated by analyzing results of model tests. For model experiments, model tests were performed with sandy soils sampled from the field, changing the relative density of sandy soil and the ratio of thickness of sandy layer(H) to the width of model strip footing(B). As result of tests, settlement of sandy soils increases as the value of H/B increases, whereas it increases with relative density of soil. Bearing capacity decreases as the thickness of the sand layer relative to the footing width increases. In order to analyze the settlement characteristics of sandy ground, the results of model tests were compared with the predicted values using the empirical formulas proposed by Terzaghi, De Beer and Schmertmann. The method by De Beer was found to be in good agreements with test results.

  • This paper describes touch and step voltage in the reinforced concrete and steel poles. Ground surface potential rises were measured as a function of the separation between pole and ground rod. Touch and step voltage are calculated on the basis of the distribution of ground surface potential rises. As a result, touch and step voltages strongly depend on the position of installation of ground rod.

  • In this paper, the application of a variable characteristic impedance transmission line that can be used to design a dual-band bandpass filter(BPF) is presented. The proposed filter offers a fixed first frequency passband and a controllable second passband. The tuning of the second passband is achieved by varying the characteristic impedance of and open shunt stub line in a stub loaded resonator(SLR) with the help of a defected ground structure(DGS) transmission line and varactor diodes. In order to validate the proposed structure, a two stage dual-band BPF with three transmission zeros was implemeted and experimentally verified based on its theoretical predictions and simulations.

  • This paper presents a design for improvement of isolation characteristics by the inserted stub structure on ground plane of a handy terminal which is composed of a main antenna and a sub antenna covered LTE bandwidth. In order to compensate for a resonance length of proposed antenna and to realize a high isolation characteristic, a pair of stub was inserted and located on ground plane that currents from two antennas were converged. A simulated isolation characteristic of antenna without stub at the LTE class 13 band was about -5 dB, but its characteristics of proposed antenna with two stubs at uplink(777~787 MHz) and downlink(746~756 MHz) of the LTE class 13 band were about -12 dB and -15 dB, respectively. An average gain of a fabricated antenna with two stubs was observed about -2 dBi above and it showed good results with comparison of business condition that the average gain of commercial handy terminal has to appear -4 dBi above. The measured S-parameter characteristics and radiation patterns showed a reasonable agreement with the simulation results.

  • In this paper, a design method for a wideband LPF for harmonic suppression applications is investigated. The proposed wideband LPF is comprised of four circular slot pairs with different diameters, which are added symmetrically in the ground plane of a CPW transmission line. Four circular slot pairs act as a defected ground structure and provide a wideband low pass characteristic. The circular slot with the smallest diameter is located at the side of port 1, and the diameter of the circular slot is increased as it goes toward port 2. The low pass characteristics of each circular slot are compared with the proposed wideband LPF. The final designed LPF was fabricated on FR4 substrate, and its characteristics were tested. The measured S11 characteristic was maintained at over -3.3 dB in the frequency range of 1.89-20.00 GHz band, whereas the S21 characteristic was less than -21.4 dB in the frequency range of 2.66-20.00 GHz.
