  • In this paper the leakage prediction and rotordynamic analysis of an annular seal with a smooth rotor and circumferentially grooved stator are performed based on a three-controlvolume theory. The present analysis is validated by comparing with the experimental data of Iwatsubo and Sheng and theoretical results suggested by Marquette and Childs. For the leakage prediction the present analysis shows a good agreement with Marquette and Childs' result and a qualitation agreement with Iwatsubo and Shengs' experimental data. Direct and cross-coupled stiffness coefficients show closer agreement with the experimental values than those of Marquette and Childs. However, direct damping coefficient shows greater discrepancy from the experimental value than Marquette and Childs'.

  • A numerical analysis is undertaken to show the influence of bearing design parameters on the load capacity of air lubricated spiral grooved thrust bearing. The governing equation derived from the mass balance is solved by the finite difference method. Optimal values for various design parameters are obtained to maximize the load capacity. The design parameters are the groove angle, the groove width ratio, the groove height ratio, and the seal ratio.

  • The noncontacting groove end face seal is one of various approaches to sealing gases with a single seal. Gas pumped into groove maintains operating gap and lubricates between primary ring and mating ring. So it removes heat and decreases face wear. In this paper, K-type and T-type grooved seals have been analyzed numerically using the finite element method. It explains the effects of groove shapes in gas seals along rotating speeds with a temperature gradient, face distortion, stress and so on. The calculated FEM results show the operating gap and rotating speed are strongly related to the leakages of a gas seal and that T-type groove seal shows a good thermal performance compared to K-type groove seal.

  • Rotordynamic analysis of a multistage turbine pump using finite element method is performed to investigate the effects of seal wear on its system behavior. Stiffness and damping coefficents of the 2-axial grooved bearing are obtained as functions of rotating speed. Stiffness and damping coefficients of plane annuler seals are calculated as functions of rotating speed as well as seal clearance of seals become larger, these stiffness and damping coefficients decrease drastically so that there can be significant changes in whirl natural frequencies and damping characteristics of the pump rotor system. Although a pump is designed to operate with a sufficient seperation margin from the 1st critical speed, seal wear due to long operation may cause a sudden increase in vibration amplitude by resonance shift and reduce seal damping capability.

  • The sealing performance of an elastomeric O-ring seal with a temperature gradient has been analyzed for the contact stress behaviors that develop between the O-ring seal and the housing surfaces with which it comes into contact in the dovetail groove. The leakage of an O-ring seal will occur when the pressure differential across the seal just exceeds the initial peak contact stress. The contact stress behaviors that develop in compressed O-rings, in common case of restrained geometry (grooved), are investigated using the finite element method. The FE analysis includes material hyperelasticity and axisymmetry The computed FEM results show that the contact stress behaviors are related to a compression rate and a temperature gradient between the vacuum chamber with a dovetail groove and the contacting plate with a cooling jacket.
