  • In surface grinding, the conditions of the grinding wheel give a significant effect on the ground workpieces comparing with other metal removal processes. In this paper, to assist the development, a non-contacting optical method is introduced to make in-process measurements of scattering intensities from laser beam during surface grinding processes. This show indications of changes in surface texture of wheel working surfaces. Also, in order to determine the dressing time monitoring method of grinding wheel in surface grinding, a three-dimensional computer simulation of the grinding operation has been attempted based on the contact mechanism and surface-shaping system between the grinding wheel and the workpiece. The optical dressing time is determined based on the amount of the grain wear and work surface roughness.

  • We explored a new rough grinding technique on optics materials such as Zerodur. The facility used is a NANOFORM-600 diamond turning machine with a custom grinding module and range of diamond resin bond wheel. The grinding parameters such as workpiece rotation speed depth of cut and feed rate were altered while grinding the workpiece surfaces of 20m in diameter. Surface roughness is measured by Form Talysurf series2. Our target is to define grinding conditions producing the surface roughness better than 0.02${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ Ra and the form accuracy of around 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ PV.

  • In this paper, to choose the optimum CBN wheel for Internal Grinding at LM Guide, among 7 types of CBN-wheels, the 2 types of CBN-wheels, which were the macrofracture CBN wheel and the microfracture CBN wheel, have been used, and the SCM420H have been used as the workpiece. The working conditions in the grinding experiments were depth-of-cut, table speed, and spindle speed for 4 types of the CBN grinding wheels, 2 types of the lubrications. By the experiments, the loading effect of the microfracture types of the CBN-wheel needed a short dressing interval and resulted in grinding wheel wear and bad surface roughness. However, a macrofracture type of CBN-wheel with the concentration of 100, CB120Q100V showed the best surface roughness quality at a low table speed for internal grinding at LM-guide.

In this paper, to assist the development, a non-contacting optical method by the laser beam is introduced. The in-process measurement of scattering intensities has been made during surface grinding processes and the surface textures of wheel working surfaces are captured. Also, in order to determine the dressing time monitoring method of a grinding wheel, a three-dimensional computer simulation of the grinding operation has been attempted based on the contact mechanism and the surface-shaping system between the grinding wheel and the workpiece. The optimal dressing time is determined by the amount of the grain wear and work surface roughness.

  • In this paper, the effects of grinding conditions on the surface roughness of $ZrO_2$ ferrule applying to the optical fiber connector were investigated. The mesh number of grindstone, the grinding speed and the time schedule during grinding were regarded as main cutting parameters that have an effect on the surface roughness. And then, optimal combinations for chamfering grinding were obtained by using the Taguchi method. In addition, analytic values for maximum surface roughness ($R_{max}$) estimated by the theoretical equations which were derived from the formative model of surface roughness on the chamfering grinding were compared with those of the experiments.

  • In this study, the effects of the maximum grit depth of cut on the grinding characteristics were investigated. And AE signals produced during grinding processes have been studied to find out the appropriate AE parameters for assessing grinding processes. S45C steel has been ground under the conditions yielding removal rate of workpiece, 100, 200, 300 and 400rnm$^3$/min which was achived by altering workpiece velocity($\upsilon$) and apparent depth of cut(Z). According to the experimental results, the value of surface roughness increases but grinding power, energy rate of AE signal(AErms$^2$) and specific grinding energy consumed decrease with increase of the maximum grit depth of cut.

  • This work was conducted to find the operating characteristics of an efficient wet grinding system designed to obtain fine rice husk ash powder. Once the rice husk was combusted and the thermal energy was recovered from the furnace, the ash was fed and pulverized in the grinding system resulting a fine powder to be used as a supplementary adding material to the portland cement. Grinding time (15, 30, 45 min), impeller speed (250, 500, 750 rpm), and mixed ratio (6.7, 8.4, 11.l, 20.9) were three operating factors examined for the performance of a wet-type stirred ball mill grinding system. For the operating conditions employed, mean diameter of fine ash powder, specific energy input, and grinding energy efficiency were in the range of $2.83{\sim}9.58{\mu}m,\;0.5{\sim}6.73kWh/kg,\;and\;0.51{\sim}3.27m^2/Wh$, respectively. With the wet-type stirred ball mill grinding system used in this study, the grinding energy efficiency decreased with the increase in total grinding time, impeller speed, and mixed ratio. The difference in specific surface area of powder linearly increased with logarithm in total number of impeller revolution and the grinding energy efficiency linearly decreased. Grinding time of 45 min, impeller speed of 500 rpm, and mixed ratio of 6.7 were chosen as the best operating condition. At this condition, mean particle diameter of the fine ash, grinding energy efficiency, grinding throughput, and specific energy input were $2.84{\mu}m,\;2.28m^2/Wh,\;0.17kg/h$, and 2.03kWh/kg, respectively. Wet fine grinding which generates no fly dust causing pollution and makes continuous operation easy, is appeared to be a promising solution to the automatization of rice husk ash grinding process.

  • Various controllable parameters of an experiment have influence on grinding process. In order to get good products with a high quality, these parameters should be considered whether each parameter has relations to the quality. This paper describes the use of the design of experiments to minimize geometric error in surface grinding. Controllable parameters for the design of experiments were selected as spindle speed, table speed, depth of cut and grain size. From the experimental results, a degree of influence between these parameters and the geometric error was evaluated. An optimal set of grinding conditions was obtained by means of analysis of variance(ANOVA).

  • In order to calculate the maximum undeformed chip thickness in grinding operation, it is necessary to estimate the successive cutting point spacing. In the past it is obtained by experiments. In this paper, the average successive cutting point spacing has been estimated using the given grinding input conditions.
