  • This paper describes the operational analysis results of the bipolar DC distribution system coupled with the distributed generators. The energy management for AC/DC power trade and the operational principle of distributed generators and energy storages were first analyzed by computer simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC software. After then a hardware simulator for the bipolar DC distribution system was built, which is composed of the grid-tied three-level inverter, battery storage, super-capacitor storage, and the voltage balancer. Various experiments with the hardware simulator were carried out to verify the operation of bipolar DC distribution system. The developed simulator has an upper-level controller which operates in connection with the controllers for each distributed generator and the battery energy storage based on CAN communication. The developed hardware simulator are possible to use in designing the bipolar DC distribution system and analyzing its performance experimentally.

  • In view of global environmental problems and resource exhaustion, we must develop new energy resources that are abundant and provide substitutes for fossil fuels. Renewable energies, such as solar, are ideal because they are clean, inexhaustible, and available everywhere in the world. Photovoltaic(PV) system, in general, are operated as a stand-alone, grid-tied, or hybrid system. Many of the stand-alone PV systems are installed. Although the pre-installation cost of PV system is high, it poorly has been operated due to the absence of optimal management standards. Therefore a study on the performance of PV system is important for the system design and maintenance. In this paper a photovoltaic lighting system was resigned according to load consumption. Then a PV lighting system which used electrodeless lamp as a load was installed. In order to investigate the system operating characteristics we've added a monitoring system to the PV lighting system. The monitoring system using the LabVIEW program regularly checks the operation of the PV lighting system and records the system data. According to the system data, the stability and availability of the PV lighting system were evaluated.

  • The design of reactor internals requires the accurate vibration characteristics of each component for subsequent dynamic structural response analyses. For Korean standard nuclear power plant some modifications on the Control Element Assembly shroud from the reference design have been made, Since the shroud is complex in geometry having an array of vertical round tubes and webs in a square grid pattern, and being tied down by preloaded tie rods into position, it is planned to perform a vibration measurement program consisting of both experimental and analytical modal studies upon that component. The shroud modal testing was performed on the low frequency global survey to measure the first several modes. The analysis using the finite element model was also performed for the as-tested conditions. The natural frequencies and mode shapes from both test and analysis have been acquired and compared to be in good agreement. It is concluded that finite element model generated is good enough to be used in the design for the dynamic response analysis under various loading conditions.

To determine the proper test conditions, the pre-test analysis has been performed using the general purpose structural analysis program ANSYS. Also the effects of the number of master degrees of freedom, holes in the web and tie-rod preload on the natural frequencies are examined prior to the pre-test analysis. After decision of appropriate finite element model, frequency analysis and harmonic analysis are performed and ideas for the test conditions such as the number of measurement points, their locations, measurement frequency range and the excitation force level are determined.

  • Bias correction of values is a necessary step in downscaling coarse and systematically biased global climate models for use in local climate change impact studies. In addition to univariate bias correction methods, many multivariate methods which correct multiple variables jointly - each with their own mathematical designs - have been developed recently. While some literature have focused on the inter-comparison of these multivariate bias correction methods, none have focused extensively on the effect of diverse configurations (i.e., different combinations of input variables to be corrected) of climate variables, particularly high-dimensional ones, on the ability of the different methods to remove biases in uni- and multivariate statistics. This study evaluates the impact of three configurations (inter-variable, inter-spatial, and full dimensional dependence configurations) on four state-of-the-art multivariate bias correction methods in a national-scale domain over South Korea using a gridded approach. An inter-comparison framework evaluating the performance of the different combinations of configurations and bias correction methods in adjusting various climate variable statistics was created. Precipitation, maximum, and minimum temperatures were corrected across 306 high-resolution (0.2°) grid cells and were evaluated. Results show improvements in most methods in correcting various statistics when implementing high-dimensional configurations. However, some instabilities were observed, likely tied to the mathematical designs of the methods, informing that some multivariate bias correction methods are incompatible with high-dimensional configurations highlighting the potential for further improvements in the field, as well as the importance of proper selection of the correction method specific to the needs of the user.

  • An experiment was designed to see if the hippocampus exerts any influence upon the aggressive behavior of male rats. Fighting between rats was observed for the estimation of aggressiveness. Seventeen rats in which the hippocampus was almost totally removed through a small hole with a diameter around 3 mm made in the neocortex at the boundary between the parietal and occipital lobes (hippocampal group), 8 rats with similar neocortical damage alone (operated control group), and 17 normal control rats (normal group) were prepared and subjected to the experiment 3 months after the operation. Applying electric shock of short duration to the feet in a box with grid floor, a fight was provoked between an animal belonging to the hippocampal group and one belonging to the nor-mal group, between a rat of the hippocampal group and one of the operated control group, and also between a rat of the operated control group and one of the normal group. Three observers judged the performance of each animal independently and described it as winning, defeated, tied, or non-fighting. Fifteen shocked trials were administered to each pair of animals with around 2 minutes' interval between each trial. An animal received a 'judging score' of 3 when it won more frequently than was defeated, a judging score of 2 when it won as frequently as was defeated, when all fights were tied, or when no fighting occurred, while it received a judging score of 1 when it won less frequently than was defeated. Group differences in performances were analyzed in terms of judging score using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for one sample. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In the fights between the hippocampal and the normal groups, the hippocampal animals made significantly better judging scores than the normal animals did (Table 1). 2. There was no significant difference between the hippocampal and the operated control group as to the judging scores they made in the course of fights between the two groups. However, the hippocampal animals tended to dominate over the operated control group as judged by comparing the total 'winning' of the former (30) to that of the latter (14) (Table 2). 3. The total judging score made by the operated control group in the course of the fights against the normal group was not significantly superior to that made by the normal group (Table 3). It was inferred from the above results that, though inconspicuous, the hippocampus tended to exert an inhibitory influence upon the aggressive behavior of male rats.
