The SMAC (Simplified Marker And Cell) algorithm is extended for an application to thermal non-equilibrium two-phase flows in light water nuclear reactors (LWRs). A two-fluid three-field model is adopted and a multi-dimensional unstructured grid is used for complicated geometries. The phase change and the time derivative terms appearing in the continuity equations are implemented implicitly in a pressure correction equation. The energy equations are decoupled from the momentum equations for faster convergence. The verification of the present numerical method was carried out against a set of test problems which includes the single and the two-phase flows. The results are also compared to those of the semi-implicit ICE method, where the energy equations are coupled with the momentum equation for pressure correction.

A conservative finite-volume numerical method using unstructured meshes, which is developed by the authors, is evaluated for its application to several 2-D benchmark problems using a variety of quadrilateral, triangular and hybrid meshes. The present pressure-based numerical method for unstructured mesh clearly demonstrates the same accuracy and robustness as that fur typical structured mesh.

Electrical sintering of the front electrode for crystalline silicon solar cells was performed applying a constant DC current to the printed lines. Conducting lines were printed on glass substrate by a drop-on-demand (DOD) inkjet printer and silver nanoparticle ink. Specific resistance and microstructure of sintered silver lines and were measured with varying DC current. To find the relation between temperature increase with changing applied current and specific resistance, temperature elevation was also calculated. Sintering process finished within a few milliseconds. Increasing applied DC current, specific resistance decreased and grain size increased after sintering. Achieved minimum specific resistance is approximately 1.7 times higher than specific resistance of the bulk silver.

This paper discribes a sonar-based certainty grid, the probabilistic representation of the uncertain and incomplete sensor knowledge, for autonomous mobile robot navigation. We use sonar sensor range data to build a map of the robot's surroundings. This range data provides information about the location of the objects which may exist in front of the sensor. From this information, we can compute the probability of being occupied and that of being empty for each cell. In this paper, a new method using Bayesian formula is introduced, which enables us to overcome some difficulties of the Ad-Hoc formula that has been the only way of updating the grids. This new formula can be applied to other kinds of sensors as well as sonar sensor. The validity of this formula in the real world is verified through simulation and experiment. This paper also shows that a wide angle sensor such as sonar sensor can be used effectively to identify the empty area, and the simultaneous use of multiple sensors and fusion in a certainty grid can improve the quality of the map.

This paper describes a numerical study to make clear the characteristics of flow around a high speed catamaran hull advancing on calm water. The simulation is carried out at Froude number of 0.5 with a separation to length rations of 0.2 to 0.5. To simulate the flows, the Navier-Stokes solver is employed in which the free surface condition is included. Computations are performed in a rectangular grid system based grid system based on the Marker & Cell method. For the validation, the computation results are compared with the experiments.

A surface encoder based on the Half-shaded square pattern (HSSP) is presented. The HSSP working as reference grid is composed of the straight lines which are easy to be fabricated and make measuring time short. Since the periodic cell is separated in ON/OFF by the $45^{\circ}$ straight line, the duration from the starting point of scanning to the first rising edge and the duty cycle of the pulse train vary with respect to the position of the starting point. And the relationship between X and Y position and the duration, and duty cycle is described in the simple linear equation. Therefore, it is possible to measure X and Y position with the measured duration and duty cycle without calculating load. Through the test set-up, the feasibility of the proposed surface encoder was verified. Also the future works for improvement of performance were suggested.

A three-dimensional thermo-hydraulic computer code is developed for simulation of incompressible flows in complex geometries. The computer code employs a body-fitted, nonorthogonal grid system in order to efficiently handle the complex geometries encountered in many engineering applications. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations and the convection term is treated by higher-order bounded schemes. The cell-centered, nonstaggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is avoided by use of momentum interpolation practice. The computer code employs the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure and velocity coupling and the k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence for turbulent calculation. The computer code has been tested through application to a variety of test problems and some results are presented in this paper
An optimal design method is adopted for a spacer grid in nuclear power plant. It is made of punched sheet metal process, functioning as springs and dimples supporting fuel rods. For stress analysis of the assembled fuel rod support, a typical cell out of the repeated pattern in the assembly is modeled using 4-node shell elements. A commercial code, ABAQUS, is used for detailed analysis of contacting phenomena with friction. For the optimization, design varibles are taken from geometric parameters representing the shape of the bent leaf spring part and mating contact region with fuel rod. Objective function is considered in relation to mechanical functions and durability. Maximum yon Mises stress is considered in relation to constrained contact stress.
The grid-based KIneMatic wave STOrm Runoff Model(Kim, 1998; Kim, et al., 1998) which predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of saturated overland flow, subsurface flow and stream flow was evaluated at two watersheds. this model adopts the single overland flowpath algorithm and simulates surface and/or subsurface water depth at each cell by using water balance of hydrologic components. the model programmed by C-language uses ASCII-formatted map data supported by the irregular gridded map of the GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) GIS and generates the spatial distribution maps of discharge, flow depth and soil moisture of the watershed.
