A dynamically-interfaced multi-grid finite difference model for simulation of tsunamis in the East Sea(Choi et al.) was established and further applied to produce detailed feature of coastal inundations along the whole eastern coast of Korea. The computational domain is composed of several sub-regions with different grid sizes connected in parallel of inclined directions with 16 innermost nested models. The innermost sub-region represents the coastal alignment reasonably well and has a grid size of about 30 meters. Numerical simulations have been performed in the framework of shallow-water equations(linear, as well as nonlinear) over the plane or spherical coordinate system, depending on the dimensions of the sub-region. Results of simulations show the general agreements with the observed data of run-up height for both tsunamis. The evolution of the distribution function of tsunami heights is studied numerically and it is shown that it tends to the log-normal curve for long distance from the source.

In this study, the software to compute Bessel coordinates by trilateration adjustment was developed, and the software was used to determine coordinates of the cadastral control points over the southern Korean peninsula. The baseline measured by GPS was reduced to the distance on geoid surface by applying PNU95 geoid model, and the distance on geoid surface was reduced to the plane grid distance by applying scale factor of map projection of Bessel coordinates. Using the plane grid distance, Bessel coordinates of 32 CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Station) were computed by free adjustment at first, and then the coordinates of the cadastral control points were computed by joining the control points to adjacent CORS. The result shows a possibility of construction of highly accurate and consistent cadastral survey network with coordinate error less than 1ppm of distance, when newly computing the coordinates of the control points by using distances measured by GPS.

This paper proposes a system that performs object detection and distance estimation for application to autonomous vehicles. Object detection is performed by a network that adjusts the split grid to the input image ratio using the characteristics of the recently actively used deep learning model YOLOv4, and is trained to a custom dataset. The distance to the detected object is estimated using a bounding box and homography. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method improved in overall detection performance and processing speed close to real-time. Compared to the existing YOLOv4, the total mAP of the proposed method increased by 4.03%. The accuracy of object recognition such as pedestrians, vehicles, construction sites, and PE drums, which frequently occur when driving to the city center, has been improved. The processing speed is approximately 55 FPS. The average of the distance estimation error was 5.25m in the X coordinate and 0.97m in the Y coordinate.

To calculate the total mass flux that change in dry and flood season in the Yeomha Channel of Gyeonggi Bay, the 13 hour bottom tracking observation was performed from the southern extremity. The value of the total mass flux(Lagrange flux) was calculated as the sum of the Eulerian flux value and stroke drift value and the tidal residual flow was harmonically analyzed through the least-squares method. Moreover, the average during the tidal cycle is essential to calculate the mass flux and the tidal residual flow and there is the need to equate the grid of repeatedly observed data. Nevertheless, due to the great differences in the studied region, the number of vertical grid tends to change according to time and since the horizontal grid differs according to the transport speed of the ship as a characteristic of the bottom tracking observation, differences occur in the horizontal and vertical grid for each hour. Hence, the present study has vertically and horizontally normalized(sigma coordinate) to equate the grid per each hour. When compared to the z-level coordinate system, the Sigma coordinate system was evaluated to have no irrationalities in data analysis with 5% of error. As a result of the analysis, the tidal residual flow displayed the flow pattern of sagging in the both ends in the main waterway direction of dry season. During flood season, it was confirmed that the tidal residual flow was vertical 2-layer flow. As a result of the total mass flux, the ebb properties of 359 cm/s and 261 cm/s were observed during dry and flood season, respectively. The total mass flux was moving the intertidal region between Youngjong-do and Ganghwa-do.

A new numerical method using solution-adaptive grids (SAG) is developed to solve the Richards' equation (RE) for unsaturated flow in porous media. Using a grid generation technique, the SAG method automatically redistributes a fixed number of grid points during the flow process, so that more grid points are clustered in regions of large solution gradients. The method uses the coordinate transformation technique to employ a new transformed RE, which is solved with the standard finite difference method. The movement of grid points is incorporated into the transformed RE, and therefore all computation is performed on fixed grid points of the transformed domain without using any interpolation techniques. Thus, numerical difficulties arising from the movement of the wetting front during the infiltration process have been substantially overcome by the new method. Numerical experiments for an one-dimensional infiltration problem are presented to compare the SAG method to the modified Picard method using a fixed grid. Results show that accuracy of a SAG solution using 41 nodes is comparable with the solution of the fixed grid method using 201 nodes, while it requires only 50% of the CPU time. The global mass balance and the convergence of SAG solutions are strongly affected by the time step size (Δt) and the weighting parameter (${\gamma}$) used for generating solution-adaptive grids. Thus, the method requires automated readjustment of Δt and ${\gamma}$ to yield mass-conservative and convergent solutions, although it may increase computational costs. The method can be effective especially for simulating unsaturated flow and other transport problems involving the propagation of a sharp-front.

This paper addresses a numerical method for predicting transient temperature distributions in the wall of a curved pipe subjected to internally thermal stratification flow. A simple and convenient numerical method of treating the unsteady conjugate heat transfer in the non-orthogonal coordinate systems is presented. The proposed method is implemented in a finite volume thermal-hydraulic computer code based on a cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement, the SIMPLEC algorithm, a higher-order bounded convection scheme, and the modified version of momentum interpolation method. Calculations are performed for the transient evolution of thermal stratification in two curved pipes, where the one has thick wall and the other has so thin wall that its presence can be negligible in the heat transfer analysis. The predicted results show that the thermally stratified flow and transient conjugate heat transfer in a curved pipe with a finite wall thickness can be satisfactorily analyzed by the present numerical method, and that the neglect of wall thickness in the prediction of pipe wall temperature distributions can provide unacceptably distorted results.

Applicabilities of two 3-D hydrodynamic models on Chungkye Bay in which tidal flats are well developed were examined. Both EFDC model and ESCORT model with the ${\sigma}$-coordinate showed fairly good results. However, their efficiencies were lowered especially on the tidal flats due to dense vertical grids. This inefficiency could be overcome by using the z-coordinate of the ESCORT model keeping similar accuracy.
The three-dimensional turbulent flow in curved pipes susceptible to flow-accelerated corrosion has been analyzed numerically to predict the pressure and shear stress distributions on the inner surface of the pipes. The analysis employs the body-fitted non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system and a standard $ {\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function method. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations. The convection term is approximated by a high-resolution and bounded discretization scheme. The cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is prevented by the application of a modified version of momentum interpolation scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed for the pressure and velocity coupling. The numerical calculations have been performed for two curved pipes with different bend angles and curvature radii, and discussions have been made on the distributions of the primary and secondary flow velocities, pressure and shear stress on the inner surface of the pipe to examine applicability of the present analysis method. As the result it is seen that the method is effective to predict the susceptible systems or their local areas where the fluid velocity or local turbulence is so high that the structural integrity can be threatened by wall thinning degradation due to flow-accelerated corrosion.
This paper presents the development of new algorithm for identifying and tracking the convective cells in three dimensional reflectivity fields in Cartesian coordinates. First, the radar volume data in spherical coordinate system has been converted into Cartesian coordinate system by the bilinear interpolation. The three-dimensional convective cell has then been identified as a group of spatially consecutive grid points using reflectivity and volume thresholds. The tracking algorithm utilizes a fuzzy logic with four membership functions and their weights. The four fuzzy parameters of speed, area change ratio, reflectivity change ratio, and axis transformation ratio have been newly defined. In order to make their membership functions, the normalized frequency distributions are calculated using the pairs of manually matched cells in the consecutive radar reflectivity fields. The algorithms have been verified for two convective events in summer season. Results show that the algorithms have properly identified storm cells and tracked the same cells successively. The developed algorithms may provide useful short-term forecasting or nowcasting capability of convective storm cells and provide the statistical characteristics of severe weather.
In this study, the shallow water equations on the sphere is simulated by the proposed method which has high spatial resolution and is based on the CIP(Cubic Interpolated Pseudoparticle) method. The governing equations are approximated on the longitude-latitudinal coordinate system. To avoid the problems resulting from the convergence of the meridians toward high-latitude and singularities on the poles, the semi-Lagrangian and finite volume method are employed. in addition, the CIP method is employed to solve the advection equations and is extended to apply on the equations in the polar coordinate system. The mathematical formulation and numerical results are also described. To verify of the efficiency, accuracy and capability of proposed algorithm, the standard test cases proposed bv Williamson et. al are simulated and the results are compared with other results. As a result, it is found that the present scheme gives a good properties in preserving shapes of solution and settles the pole problems in solving the shallow water equations on the sphere.
