Large eddy simulations of transitional flows around a stud installed on a flat plate have been performed to investigate an influence of grid resolution on turbulence stimulation by the stud. Because streamwise vortical structures generated by the stud played an important role in turbulence stimulation of boundary layer, streamwise vorticity was compared in the wake region behind the stud when the number of grids increased or decreased by a ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$ in streamwise, wall-normal and spanwise directions respectively. The streamwise vorticity was shown to be mainly affected by spanwise grid resolution (${\Delta}z^+$) rather than streamwise and wall-normal grid resolution. In a viewpoint of numerical efficiency as well as physical resolution, ${\Delta}x^+{_{min}}=7.6$, ${\Delta}x^+{_{max}}=41$, ${\Delta}y^+{_{wall}}=0.25$ and ${\Delta}z^+=7.6$ was found to be desirable. Once a grid resolution was determined in each direction, a grid verification was carried out by increasing or decreasing the grid resolution y a ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$ in all directions. The grid uncertainties of pressure and drag coefficients were 21.6 % and 2.8 % while the corrected uncertainties were 2 % and 0.3 %, respectively.
In order to investigate effects of grid resolution on large-eddy simulation of flow over a heavy vehicle, large-eddy simulations over the vehicle with coarse grid and fine grid are conducted. In addition, comparison of drag coefficients with the experimental data obtained by a wind tunnel experiment is conducted. Both of the drag coefficients of coarse grid and fine grid large-eddy simulation show good agreement with the experimental data. Flow fields obtained by the coarse and the fine grid large-eddy simulation are compared in the vehicle frontal-face region, the vehicle rear wheel region, and the vehicle base region. Coarse grid large-eddy simulation shows good agreement with the fine grid large-eddy simulation in the vehicle front face region and the vehicle rear wheel region, since the flow over the present vehicle is dominated by flow separation which is geometrically pre-determined, not by the skin friction which is known to be sensitive to grid resolution.
High-resolution flows around a steep mountainous island (Ulleungdo) in Korea were simulated by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. To cover entire Ulleungdo and to resolve the topography around the Ulleungdo automatic synoptic observing system (ASOS) with high resolution, one-way nested grid system with large (60 m), and small (20 m) grid sizes was applied in the CFD model simulations. We conducted the numerical simulations for 16 inflow directions, and, for each inflow direction, we considered six different wind velocities(5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 m s-1) at the reference height (1,000 m). The effects of topography on surface wind observations were well reflected in the observed wind roses for the period of January 01, 2012 ~ December 31, 2016 at the Ulleungdo ASOS and marine buoy. Wind roses at the Ulleungdo ASOS was reproduced based on the CFD simulations. The changes in surface winds at the Ulleungdo ASOS caused by surrounding topography were relatively well simulated by the CFD model. The simulated wind-rose indicated that south-southwesterly and northeasterly were the dominant wind directions, which were also observed at the Ulleungdo ASOS. We investigated the flow characteristics around the Ulleungdo ASOS for northwesterly, south-southwesterly, and northeasterly winds in detail.

By using numerical simulation, vast and detailed information and observation of the physics of flow over a train model can be obtained. However, the accuracy of the numerical results is questionable as it is affected by grid convergence error. This paper describes a systematic method of computational grid refinement for the Unsteady Reynolds Navier-Stokes (URANS) of flow around a generic model of trains using the OpenFOAM software. The sensitivity of the computed flow field on different mesh resolutions is investigated in this paper. This involves solutions on three different grid refinements, namely fine, medium, and coarse grids to investigate the effect of grid dependency. The level of grid independence is evaluated using a form of Richardson extrapolation and Grid Convergence Index (GCI). This is done by comparing the GCI results of various parameters between different levels of mesh resolutions. In this study, monotonic convergence criteria were achieved, indicating that the grid convergence error was progressively reduced. The fine grid resolution's GCI value was less than 1%. The results from a simulation of the finest grid resolution, which includes pressure coefficient, drag coefficient and flow visualization, are presented and compared to previous available data.

Macro scale distributed hydrological models simulate river discharge with better accuracy but it depends upon the grid resolution of input data. Effects of different input resolutions are studied here. Three different grid resolution input data obtained from HUBEX-IOP EEWB data and GAME Re-analysis data are used to simulate river discharge and compared against the observed one. CAME Re-analysis 1.25-degree resolution data are found quite satisfactory in larger basins, while HUBEX-IOP EEWB 10-minute resolution data are better for small catchments. GAME Re-analysis 2.5-degree resolution data did not give good result. Simulated results by using spatially interpolated data are rather worse than using original data. The Huaihe River basin $(132350\textrm{km}^2)$ is taken as the case of study.
Orographic effect is one of the important factors to induce Local circulations and to make atmospheric turbulence, so it is necessary to use the exact topographic data for prediction of local circulations. In order to clarify the sensitivity of the spatial resolution of topography data, numerical simulations using several topography data with different spatial resolution are carried out under stable and unstable synoptic conditions. The results are as follows: 1) Influence of topographic data resolution on local circulation tends to be stronger at simulation with fine grid than that with coarse grid. 2) The hight of mountains in numerical model become mote reasonable with high resolution topographic data, so the orographic effect is also emphasized and clarified when the topographic data resolution is higher. 2) The higher the topographic resolution is, the stronger the mountain effect is. When used topographic data resolution become fine, topography in numerical model becomes closer to real topography. 3) The topographic effect tends to be stronger when atmospheric stability is strong stable. 4) Although spatial resolution of topographic data is not fundamental factor for dramatic improvement of weather prediction accuracy, some influence on small scale circulation can be recognized, especially in fluid dynamic simulation.
Large-eddy simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder at a Reynolds number, based on cylinder diameter and free-stream velocity, $Re_D=2{\times}10^4$ are presented. Three different dynamic subgrid-scale models are used, viz. the dynamic eddy-viscosity model and two different mixed two-parameter models. The sensitivity to grid refinement in the spanwise and radial directions is systematically investigated. For the highest resolution considered, the effects of subgrid-scale modeling are also discussed in detail. In particular, it is shown that SGS modeling has a significant influence on the low-frequency modulations of the aerodynamics loads, which are related to significant changes in the near wake structure.
It is essential to estimate the vehicle localization for an autonomous safety driving. In particular, since LIDAR provides precise scan data, many studies carried out to estimate the vehicle localization using LIDAR and pre-generated map. The road marking always exists on the road because of provides driving information. Therefore, it is often used for map information. In this paper, we propose to generate the Gaussian mixture map based on road-marking information and localization method using this map. Generally, the probability distributions map stores the single Gaussian distribution for each grid. However, single resolution probability distributions map cannot express complex shapes when grid resolution is large. In addition, when grid resolution is small, map size is bigger and process time is longer. Therefore, it is difficult to apply the road marking. On the other hand, Gaussian mixture distribution can effectively express the road marking by several probability distributions. In this paper, we generate Gaussian mixture map and perform vehicle localization using Gaussian mixture map. Localization performance is analyzed through the experimental result.
The impact of vertical grid-nesting on the tropical cyclone intensity and track forecast was investigated using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) version 3.8 and the initialization method of the Structure Adjustable Balanced Bogus Vortex (SABV). For a better resolution in the central part of the numerical domain, where the tropical cyclone of interest is located, a horizontal and vertical nesting technique was employed. Simulations of the tropical cyclone Sanba (16th in 2012) indicated that the vertical nesting had a weak impact on the cyclone intensity and little impact on the track forecast. Further experiments revealed that the performance of forecast was quite sensitive to the horizontal resolution, which is in agreement with previous studies. The improvement is due to the fact that horizontal resolution can improve forecasts not only on the tropical cyclone-scale but also for large-scale disturbances.

The conventional machine vision system which has uniform rectangular grid requires tremendous amount of computation for processing and analysing an image especially in 2-D image transfermations such as scaling, rotation and 3-D reconvery problem typical in robot application environment. In this study, the imaging system with nonuiformly distributed image sensors simulating human visual system, referred to as Ploar Exponential Grid(PEG), is compared with the existing conventional uniform rectangular grid system in terms of image resolution and computational complexity. By mimicking the geometric structure of the PEG sensor cell, we obtained PEG-like images using computer simulation. With the images obtained from the simulation, image resolution of the two systems are compared and some basic image processing tasks such as image scaling and rotation are implemented based on the PEG sensor system to examine its performance. Furthermore Fourier transform of PEG image is described and implemented in image analysis point of view. Also, the range and heading-angle measurement errors usually encountered in 3-D coordinates recovery with stereo camera system are claculated based on the PEG sensor system and compared with those obtained from the uniform rectangular grid system. In fact, the PEC imaging system not only reduces the computational requirements but also has scale and rotational invariance property in Fourier spectrum. Hence the PEG system has more suitable image coordinate system for image scaling, rotation, and image recognition problem. The range and heading-angle measurement errors with PEG system are less than those of uniform rectangular rectangular grid system in practical measurement range.
