  • Sclerotinia rot symptoms were observed in stringy stonecrop (Sedum sarmentosum) plants growing in vinyl greenhouses in Yeoju and Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, during disease surveys in spring 2019 and 2020. The initial symptoms were soft rot on stems and leaves at or above the soil line. Furthermore, the symptoms progressed upwards, and the infected plant parts exhibited white to grayish-yellow discoloration. The infestation of diseased plants in the vinyl greenhouses was 1-5% at the two locations examined. Eight isolates of Sclerotinia sp. were obtained from lesions of the diseased plants. The isolates were identified as Sclerotinia sclerotiorum based on their morphological and molecular characteristics. In addition, artificial inoculation tested three isolates of S. sclerotiorum for pathogenicity on stringy stonecrop plants. All the tested isolates caused Sclerotinia rot symptoms in the inoculated plants. The symptoms were similar to those observed in plants from the vinyl greenhouses investigated. This study is the first report of S. sclerotiorum causing Sclerotinia rot in stringy stonecrop.

  • During crop disease surveys in 2019 and 2021, we observed gray mold symptoms on the leaves of wasabi (Eutrema japonicum) plants grown in vinyl greenhouses in Taebaek and Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province, Korea. The symptoms appeared at the edges of the leaves, where the infected areas turned black and rotted, and many gray molds formed on the lesions. The incidence of gray mold on the leaves in the vinyl greenhouses at the two locations ranged from 1 to 30%. Four fungal isolates were obtained from leaf lesions and identified as Botrytis cinerea based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. Two isolates of B. cinerea were used for pathogenicity tests on the leaves of wasabi plants by artificial inoculation. The pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed in leaves. The symptoms induced by the isolates were similar to those observed in wasabi leaves in the vinyl greenhouses investigated. This is the first report of B. cinerea causing gray mold in wasabi in Korea.

  • Environmental measurements in the many different types of horticultural farms were carried out to evaluate the ventilation performance for multi-span plastic greenhouses according to the eaves height, the number of spans, the existence of side wall vents and the position of roof vents. Hydroponic tomatoes were being cultivated in all experimental greenhouses, and ventilation rates of the greenhouses were analyzed by the heat balance method. It showed that the ventilation rate in the greenhouse with 4 m eaves height increased about 22% compared to the greenhouse with 2 m eaves height. The ventilation rate in the greenhouse with 9 spans decreased about 17% compared to the greenhouse with 5 spans. In the greenhouse with 9 spans, if there were no side wall vents, the ventilation rate showed about a third of the case that side wall vents were open. Overall, as the eaves height was higher and the number of spans was smaller in multi-span greenhouses, the natural ventilation performance was better. And the ventilation performance was best in the greenhouse which the eaves height was high and the position of roof vents was ridge, not gutter. Therefore, in order to maximize the natural ventilation performance, multi-span plastic greenhouses need to improve their structures such as that make the eaves height higher, place the roof vents on the ridge, install the side wall vents as much as possible, and the number of spans is limited to about 10 spans.

  • It is difficult to install a ventilation window on the roof of single span greenhouses of arch shape. Investigation on the roof ventilation structures for those greenhouses was conducted. In small greenhouses with spans of 5 to 8 m, circular or chimney type ridge vents made of plastic were employed. In large greenhouses with spans of 12 to 18 m, even span roll-up ridge vents made of steel pipe were employed. The effect of roof ventilation was evaluated by comparative experiments between greenhouse installing ridge vents and having controlled side vents only. Roof ventilation contributed greatly to restraint of temperature rise and maintenance of uniform temperature distribution in greenhouses. And ventilation efficiency was analyzed by experiments on the opening and closing operation of the ridge and side vent. There were no temperature differences according to opening and closing sequence of ventilation window. But for greenhouse temperature control by ventilation, it is desirable to open side vents after ridge vents and to close ridge vents after side vents.

  • This study was conducted for analyzing the influence of outside temperature upon shading effect of greenhouses by simulation. The simulation program was tested by comparing predicted values to measured values and applied the Korean standard wide span glasshouse. The shading effect according to the variation of outside temperature was different by shading method and rate. The increasing rate of inside temperature with different shading rate was nearly propotional to the increasing value of outside temperature. The outside shading effect was a little better than inside shading.

  • Protection agriculture is the essential choice for human to increase the efficiency of limited crop production area under harsh and changeable weather boundary conditions, extend growing season, maximize the crop yields, and then increase the sustainable income of the grower. The investment costs far greenhouses as well as labor and energy costs are much higher than for conventional plant production systems, so these can only be balanced by better crop yields, higher labor productivity, and higher energy efficiency. • Fungal contamination is a detrimental factor affecting sawdust media-based shiitake cultivation in greenhouses. During fungal monitoring of greenhouses used for shiitake cultivation, eight fungal species were isolated and identified from indoor air and mushroom flies collected in the greenhouses. The current study reported five species as new in Korea, viz. Ascochyta hordei, Discosia artocreas, Mucor nidicola, Perenniporia medulla-panis, and Pseudozyma prolifica, and confirmed two species, Penicillium charlesii and Penicillium brevicompactum, which were previously recorded in Korea without molecular taxonomic validation. The morphological characteristics and phylogenetic relationships based on nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA region or calmodulin gene were described for all identified species.

  • The adaptability of an evaporative cooling system to hot summer climate in greenhouses was comprehensively judged by fuzzy theory, based on the 20 years(1975~1994) weather data of nine representative regions in Korea. As uses the evaporative cooling system for greenhouses during summer in Korea, the inside air temperature of most regions except the southwest coastal areas, the south coastal areas, and Cheju island can be basically controlled below 32.5$^{\circ}C$, and ventilating air can be cooled 5$^{\circ}C$ and more. The analyzed results in this paper are on the basis of good ventilation system. When the evaporative cooling system is applied, the ventilation system which has good air flow organization is needed. Although the summer climate in Korea is high temperature and humidity, evaporative cooling systems are suitable for farm buildings in most regions. This facts better meet the needs of cooling for greenhouse in summer and provides a scientific basis for spreading the evaporative cooling system It is proposed that the further research is needed about the application of evaporative cooling system to greenhouses.

  • In order to provide fundamental data for the creation of environmental design criteria for horticultural facilities, we developed a method to easily calculate the seasonal heating load applying heating degree-hour while taking into account heating load reductions due to solar radiation in the daytime, and reviewed through greenhouse heating experiments. Heating experiments and measuring meteorological environments were carried out in three greenhouses located at Buyeo, Cheonan, and Buan, and we derived reduction factors of seasonal heating load according to hours of sunshine. Daily mean hours of sunshine during the experiment period in each of the greenhouse was 4.0 to 8.3 hours, and the reduction factor of seasonal heating load was 0.64 to 0.85, has been shown to decrease linearly with the increase in hours of sunshine. A method to estimate the seasonal heating load for greenhouses was developed using the reduction factor of seasonal heating load derived from the greenhouse heating experiment, including the adjustment factor of seasonal heating load according to hours of sunshine. The developed method was validated through heating experiments in a greenhouse located at Cheonan. Greenhouse seasonal heating loads calculated by the method developed in this study were analyzed to show the estimate error of 1.2 to 5.0%. It showed that the accuracy increased 2.3 times more than when using the heating load reduction factor of 0.75 applied uniformly in previous studies. Thus, the calculation method of seasonal heating load for greenhouses considering hours of sunshine developed in this study could be utilized for energy estimation, management planning, and economic evaluation in greenhouse design.
