  • Surface failures of slopes in weathered soil are caused by infiltration due to prolonged rainfall. These failures are mainly triggered by the deepening of the wetting band accompanied by a decrease in suction induced by the infiltrating water. This paper reports trends of rainfall-induced wetting band depth in two types of weathered soils that are commonly found in Korea. Both theoretical and numerical analyses are presented based on the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) obtained using filter paper as well as tensiometer tests. It is found that the magnitude of wetting front suction plays a key role in the stability of slopes in weathered soils. Theoretical analysis based on modified Green and Ampt model tends to underestimate the wetting band depth for typical Korean weathered soils. It was also deduced that for Korean weathered soils, the factor of safety drops rapidly once the wetting band depth of 1.2 m is reached.

  • This paper describes a GIS-based geohydrologic methodology, called YSGWF (YonSei GroundWater Flow) for predicting the rainfall infiltration-groundwater flow of slopes. This physical-based model was developed by the combination of modified Green-Ampt model that considers the unsaturated soil parameters and GIS-based raster model using Darcy's law that reflects the groundwater flow. In the model, raster data are used to simulate the three dimensional inclination of bedrock surface as actual topographic data, and the groundwater flow is governed by the slope. Also, soil profile is ideally subdivided into three zones, i.e., the wetting band zone, partially saturated zone, and fully saturated zone. In the wetting band and partially saturated zones the vertical infiltration of water (rainfall) from surface into ground is modeled. When the infiltrated water recharges into the fully saturated zone, the horizontal flow of groundwater is introduced. A comparison between the numerical calculation and real landslide data shows a reasonable agreement, which indicate that the model can be used to simulate real rainfall infiltration-groundwater flow.

  • We proposed a GPU (Grapic Processing Unit) accelerated kinematic wave model for rainfall runoff simulation and tested the accuracy and speed up performance of the proposed model. The governing equations are the kinematic wave equation for surface flow and the Green-Ampt model for infiltration. The kinematic wave equations were discretized using a finite volume method and CUDA fortran was used to implement the rainfall runoff model. Several numerical tests were conducted. The computed results of the GPU accelerated kinematic wave model were compared with several measured and other numerical results and reasonable agreements were observed from the comparisons. The speed up performance of the GPU accelerated model increased as the number of grids increased, achieving a maximum speed up of approximately 450 times compared to a CPU (Central Processing Unit) version, at least for the tested computing resources.

  • This study aims to evaluate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) hourly hydrological modeling performance and compare it with daily SWAT modeling parameters. For the Byeolmicheon catchment ($1.17km^2$) located in the upstream of Gyeongancheon watershed and total 18 storm events measured during 3 years (2011-2013), the hourly SWAT was calibrated and validated using the Green and Ampt (G&A) infiltration equation. The determination coefficient ($R^2$) and Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) of hourly SWAT discharge were 0.81 and 0.73 respectively, and the most sensitive parameter was soil saturated hydraulic conductivity (SOL_K) and calibrated with the average value of 0.075 mm/hr. In addition, the hourly SWAT simulation by G&A was compared with the daily SWAT simulation by SCS-CN (Soil Conservation Service-Curve Number) method for the whole 3 years period. The houlrly G&A results showed $R^2$ and NSE of 0.71 and 0.50, and the daily SCS-CN results were 0.71 and 0.66, respectively. The SOL_K by daily SCS_CN method was calibrated at 75.5 mm/hr, 1,000 times greater than the hourly G&A method. The next sensitive parameters for the hourly simulation were lag time of lateral flow (LAT_TIME) and lag time of surface runoff (SURLAG).

  • This paper is to present the determination of the optimal loss rate parameters and unit hydrographs from the observed single rainfall-runoff event using optimization model. The linear program models has been formulated to derive the optimal unit hydrographs and loss rate parameters for the site of the Su-Jik Bridge in the HwangGuJichen River; one minimizes the summation of the absolute residual between predicted and observed runoff ordinates. In the perturbation stage of parameters the trial and error method has been adopted to determine the loss rate parameters for Kostiakov's, Philip's, Horton's, and Green-Ampt's equation. The unique unit hydrograph ordinates for a given rainfall-runoff event is exclusively obtained with ${\Phi}$ index, but unit hydrograph ordinates depend upon the parameters for each loss rate equations. In this paper the single rainfall-runoff event observed from the sample watershed is considered to test the proposed method. The optimal unit hydrograph obtained by the optimization model has smaller deviations than the ones by the conventional method.

  • Shallow slope failures in residual soil during periods of prolonged infiltration are common in Korea. This study examines an infinite slope analysis to estimate the influence of infiltration on surficial stability of slopes by the limit equilibrium method. Approximate method which is based on the Green-Ampt model have been considered to evaluate the likelihood of shallow slope failure which is induced by a particular rainfall event that accounts for the rainfall intensity and duration for various return periods. Pradel & Raad method which is devised to predict the depth of wetting front to decomposed granite soil slopes having measured soil-water characteristic curves. To compare the results with those obtained from the Pradel & Raad method, a series of numerical analysis using SEEP/W were carried out. It was found that the stability analysis of unsaturated soils calculated by using the soil-water characteristic curve of decomposed granite soils was found to be a proper analysis for shallow slope failures due to rainfall.

  • The genetic algorithm is investigated fer parameters estimation of SED (storage - effective drainage) model from the Wi-stream watershed in Nakdong river basin. In the practical application of model, as a number of watershed parameters do not measure directly, it is desirable to make a good estimation from the known rainfall and runoff data. For the estimation of parameters of the SED model using the genetic algorithm, parameters of Green-Ampt equation(SM, K$\_$s/) for the estimation of an effective rainfall and initial storage(y$\_$in/) used in SED model are obtained a regression equation with 5, 10, 20 days antecedent precipitation. And as a consequence of computation, the parameters were obtained to satisfy the proposed objective function. From the comparison of observed and computed hydrographs, it shows a good agreement in the shape and the rising limb, peak, falling limb of hydrograph, so the SED model using the genetic algorithm shows a suitable model for runoff analysis in river basin.

  • In Korea, most landslides occurr during the rainy season and have shallow failure planes parallel to the slope. For these types of rainfall-induced failures, the most important factor triggering slope unstability is decrease in the matric suction of unsaturated soils with increasing saturation depth by rainfall infiltration. For this reason, estimation of cumulative infiltration has a significance. In this study, infiltration rate and cumulative infiltration are estimated by using both Mein & Larson model based on Green-Ampt infiltration model and using modified Mein & Larson model to which unsteady rainfall is applied. According to the results, the modified model is more reasonable than Mein & Larson method itself in estimation of infiltration rate and saturation depth because of considering real pending condition.

  • This paper is to present the determination of the optimal Joss rate parameters and urnt bydrographs from the observed single rainfall-runoff event using optimization models coupled with a stochastic technique for the global solution. Two kinds of the linear program models are formulated to derive the optimal unit hydrographs and loss rate parameters for gaged basins; one mimmizes the summation of the absolute residual between predlCted and observed runoff ordinates and the other, the maximum absolute residuaL Multistart algorithm which is one or stochastic techniques for the global optimum is adopted to perturb the parameters of the loss rate equations. Multistart efficiently searches the feasIble region to identify the global optimlUll for loss rate parameters, which yields the optimal loss rate parameters and unit hydrograph for Kostiakov's, Plulip's, and Horton's equation. The unique unit hydrograph ordinates for a gIven rainfall-runoff event iS exclusrvely obtained WIth $\Phi$ index, but unit hydrograph ordinates depend upon the parameters [or each loss rate equations. The parameters of Green-Ampt's are determined through a trial and error method. In this paper the single rainfall-nmoff event observed from a watershed is considered to test the proposed method. The optimal unit hydrograph herein found has smaller deviations than the ones reported previously by other researchers.
