  • Hydrazine which has been used as monopropellant shows high performance, but because of its high toxicity research for new green propellant that could replace hydrazine is going on. Ionic liquid propellant that is one of the green propellant has lower toxicity, higher specific impulse, and higher density than hydrazine. To design the thruster which use Hydroxylamine Nitrate (HAN), one of ionic liquid propellant, as a propellant, a quantity of catalyst for full decomposition of a propellant is needed. In this study, reference point for HAN thruster design could be suggested through a design of a small scale thruster which used HAN propellant, and propellant decomposition capability evaluation with characteristic velocity efficiency.

  • In this report the developing trends of several clean and green propellants have been summarized. A low-acid clean propellant has been developed, which substantially reduced the content of hydrochloric acid(HCl) in the solid rocket exhaust. Although the chlorine-free approach is now preferred, this technology has not been proved yet. Another acid suppression effect of Magnalium(Mg-Al Alloy) was investigated. Reports says that the concentration of HCl could be reduced to approximately one-fifth of conventional propellant. Many 'green' propellants with low toxicity are being developed for next-generation post-boost propulsion systems, in which combustion research on the Al or Mg fine metal particles with hot steam in various stoichiometric conditions are being performed.

  • Since the 1960s hydrazine is used as a propellant to power rocket, satellites or deep space missions. Due to hydrazine's high toxicity and operating cost, the request for Green Propellant as energetic ionic liquids(HAN, ADN), nitrous oxide blends is growing. Nitrous Oxide Fuel Blend(NOFB) having advantage of a bipropellant performance as well as the advantage of a mono-propellant in respect to the simple propellant tank and feed system. It is worth replacing traditional hydrazine based propellant system if handled and designed properly.

  • In the last decade, hydrogen peroxide has received renewed interest as a green propellant which is non-toxic, environmentally clean and relatively easy to handle. This study was performed to acquire the design technique and combustion performance of a 200N bi-propellant engine using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene. The engine which used a catalytic ignition method was designed and cold flow tests were carried out to investigate atomization characteristics. Combustion tests including a pulse mode operation were performed to investigate the combustion performance on various O/F ratios. The results showed that the combustion efficiency and the repeatability of the engine performance were enough to use as an essential database for the development of a high performance engine.

  • Hypergolic propellants have been widely used for space propulsion systems based their long-term storability and high ignition reliability. Since conventional hypergolic propellants are highly toxic and carcinogenic, handling and operating costs are significant. To overcome the drawbacks, numerous studies have been actively performed to develope new hypergolic propellants, ensuring that the combinations are high performance, low toxicity and low environmental impact. In the present study, a comprehensive survey was conducted to summarize the research and development of green hypergolic propellants involving hydrogen peroxide, nitric acid, and ionic liquids.

  • Research of ADN-based monopropellant thruster is progressed by developed countries in Europe to replace toxic hydrazine, and ADN-based monopropellant thruster system is the only system that was proved in space environment. In this research, ADN-based propellant and catalyst was fabricated to develop ADN-based monopropellant thruster, and catalytic combustion performance with fabricated propellant and catalyst were evaluated with DSC-TG analysis. Catalytic combustion of propellant and catalyst was determined with firing test using 5 N scale liquid monopropellant thruster.

  • As the interest of environment was increased recently, the environment friendly propellants are required in space community, The hydrogen peroxide is the most suitable propellant for this because it requires very low development cost and has very low environmental impact. In this paper the chemical characteristics, advantage/disadvantage as a propellant, historical applications and recent developments were discussed.

  • Hypergolic propellants, which can ignite themselves without an ignition source, are difficult to handle due to their corrosiveness and toxicity. Therefore, it is necessary to develop green hypergolic propellants with little or no toxicity. In this study, basic research on green hypergolic ignition propellants was conducted. With 95% hydrogen peroxide as an oxidizer and CNU_HGFv1 as a fuel, ignition and combustion characteristics of propellants were evaluated through a drop test, an ignition test, and a combustion test. As a result of the drop test, the ignition delay time was 9.7 ms. It was 27 ms in the ignition test, which was fast enough to be used as a propellant. As a result of the combustion test, a combustion efficiency of 95.4~98.1% was achieved at about 11.7 bar. It was confirmed that fast and stable combustion was possible without hard start or combustion instability.

  • Hydrazine, which is used as a representative monopropellant, is an extremely poisonous substance and has a disadvantage that it is harmful to the human body and is very difficult to handle. In recent years, research on the development of non-toxic and environmentally friendly propellants has attracted much attention. Ammonium dinitramide(ADN) based propellant developed by Swedish Space Corporation has superior performance to hydrazine and has been commercialized through performance verification in space environment. On the other hand, the exhaust gas from a thruster nozzle collides with a satellite while it is spreading in the vacuum space, thermal load and surface contamination may occur and may reduce the performance and lifetime of the satellite. However, a study on the effect of the exhaust gas of the green propellant thruster on the satellite has not been conducted in earnest yet. Therefore, the exhaust gas behavior in space was analyzed in this study for the ADN based green monopropellant using Navier-Stokes equations and the DSMC method. As a result, it can be expected to be used as design validation data in the development of satellite when using the ADN based green monopropellant.

  • Spacecraft propulsion system is a kind of rocket engine that has been developed from the end of 1950s for attitude control and orbit maintenance of satellite. Since the spacecraft propulsion system has to be used for a relatively long time, therefore, stability of propellant and life of thruster could be very important factor for propulsion system design. Recently, green propellant propulsion and all electrical propulsion system have became very important issue, and we also need a development according to well organized plan. In this paper, we will introduce the development status, key technologies and development prospect of spacecraft propulsion system.
