  • The green manure crops such as rye, hairy vetch and scotch oat were applied to reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) cultivation, which manure crops was sowed in latter-September or mid-October and returned to soil in the next year of May. The growth and yields were increased as 33%(65.0kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) compared to continuous cropping system of 48.9kg/10a. In the CCS of sesame, it was increased as $10{\sim}15%$ in the green manure crop cultivation, and rye cultivation was the most effective crop to reduce the injury of continuous cropping in the green manure crops. The RCS displayed lower disease outbreak and Fussarium oxysporum density in the soil compared with the CCS, and the green manure crop showed good effect in the CCS of sesame. In the RCS, the porosity was most high in the RCS and CCS of rye cultivation, while rye and hairy vetch was effective way to reduce the injury of continuous cropping. The outbreaks of wilt disease and phytophthora blight were increased as the CCS years, however displayed lowest outbreaks of disease and the yields showed highest in the rye cultivation.

  • The competition between green manure and forage crops frequently occurred at agricultural field because of soil fertility and livestock feeding selection. These experiments were carried out to evaluate the effects shoot and residue for green manure and forage production by leguminous crops and barley mixtures at paddy. Field experiments were conducted at paddy soil from 2008 to 2009. Treatments consisted of mixture and inter-seeding of barley and leguminous crops (hairy vetch and crimson clover). These treatments were divided into cutting height of 8 and 25 cm for using of green manure and forage at once. The residue biomass of 25 cm cutting height was higher than 8 cm and were no significantly between mixture and inter-seeding. However, residues of legume crop were significantly higher at inter-seeding than mixture. The shoot biomass of 8 cm cutting height was higher than 25 cm for forage using. The production of legume crop was high at the barley and hairy vetch seeding plot. The mixture of hairy vetch and barley showed the best biomass of shoot and residue for green manure and forage using at 25 cm of cutting height. Also this treatment could be possible to rice cultivation by no fertilization. Therefore, we suggested that 25 cm cutting of hairy vetch and barley mixture could be used for green manure and forage at the same time under rice-based cropping system.

  • To investigate the effect of partial tillage seeding of hairy vetch on green manure biomass and rice yield, on-farm experiment was conducted at eco-friendly hairy vetch cultivation area located in Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do. Seeding methods of hairy vetch consisted of partial tillage seeding (PTS) and broadcasting before rice harvesting (BBRH). Hairy vetch was incorporated into soil on May 18 and rice seedling was transplanted on May 26. The growths of hairy vetch before overwintering were investigated on November 11. Plant height of BBRH plot was longer than that of PTS plot, but somewhat larger number of seedling stand was found in PTS. Biomass and N production of hairy vetch were investigated on May 18. Results of the investigation showed no difference between two seeding methods. Although the seeding time was 21 days late in PTS, the biomass of hairy vetch and rice yield were equivalent to those of BBRH seeding, so we conclude that PTS could improve overwintering survival of hairy vetch in rice cropping system.

  • Rye is cultivated on about 30,000ha domestically for forage and green-manure production in Korea. 'Daegokgreen' has been developed as a good quality rye cultivar for forage and green-manure, which was doubled-chromosome by colchicine treatment of diploid rye cultivar 'Gogu' in 2010. By the colchicine treatment with 0.05% for 12 hours at $2^{nd}$ leaf stage of 'Gogu', 31 tetraploid plants were obtained and they produced 2,470 seeds with 135 spikes. There was 4.4 in the number of spikes per plant, 18.3 in grain number per spike, and 37.6 g in the1,000-grain weight. The heading date of 'Daegokgreen' was April 11, which was two days later on average compared with 'Gogu'. The biomass (fresh weight) of 'Daegokgreen' was 3,701kg, which was similar to 'Gogu'. The average crude protein content of 'Daegokgreen' was 8.9%, which was 1.0% point higher than 'Gogu'. 'Daegokgreen' was found to be strong resistant to winter-kill and can be adapted to before maize cultivation.

  • This experiment was carried out to compare weed occurrence and to evaluate the field performance of some leguminous plant species under no-weeding fallow condition during summer months from middle of June to middle of August. In 2005 and 2006, the first dominant weed species was Digitaria sanguinalis, and other major weed species, such as Cyperus amuricus, Portulaca oleracea, and Amaranthus retroflexus, were similar among treatments. In both years, total shoot dry weight of weeds was the highest In the control plot, and the lowest in the cowpea plot, indicating that cowpea most effectively suppressed the growth of weeds among treatments. When the growth of four different leguminous species were compared after seeding during middle of June in 2006, cowpea and rice bean grew vigorously under no-weeding condition during hot and humid summer months, while wild soybean and hairy vetch did not. Shoot dry weight was in the order of cowpea > rice bean > wild soybean > hairy vetch. In conclusion, cowpea is a leguminous species which can be used as a green manure cover crop during summer months under no-weeding and our climate condition. Further works are needed to use cowpea as a green cover crop during summer months for various cropping systems.

  • Background: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of fertilization with the application of mixed organic matter after cultivating green manure crops on the growth and saponin content of Codonopsis lanceolata Trautv. Methods and Results: Five type of cultivation of green manure crops were done: hairy vetch as a single seedling crop (HV), hairy vetch and rye as a mixture of seedling (HV/R), additional fertilization with mixed organic matter after cultivation of a seedling mixture (HV/R/MO), chemical fertilizer (CF), and a non-treated control (NT). The total nitrogen content was the highest in the HV/R/MO treatment, followed by the HV, CF, HV/R and NT treatments, respectively. Nitrogen fixation was higher in the single seedling treatment with hairy vetch (HV) than in the treatment with a mixture of hairy vetch and rye seedling (HV/R). Moreover, the growth of C. lanceolata was greatly increased by the application of additional fertilizer after treatment with the mixture of hairy vetch and rye seedlings. The HV/R/MO treatment produced the highest total lancemaside content among the treatments, followed by HV, HV/R, CF, and NT, respectively. Conclusions: It was verified that C. lanceolata experienced superior growth with the application of mixed organic matter as additional fertilizer after the cultivation of green manure crops, and the content of its major saponins, lancemasides were also increased by this treatment.

  • Remote sensing can be used to provide information about the monitoring of crop situation. This study was conducted to estimate the amount of nitrogen present in paddy fields by measuring the amount of nitrogen in hairy vetch using an UAV (Unmaned Aerial Vehicle). NDVIs (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) were calculated using UAV images obtained from paddy fields in Seocheon on May $14^{th}$ 2015. There was strong relationship between UAV NDVI and the amount of nitrogen in hairy vetch ($R^2=0.79$). Spatial distribution maps of green manure nitrogen were generated on each paddy field using the nitrogen-vegetation index relations to help farmers determine the amount of N fertilizers added to their rice fields after the application of green manure such as hairy vetch.
