  • Our country set the mid-term reduction goal of greenhouse gases up to 2020 in accordance with Bali roadmap agreed in 2007 through the negotiation with UNFCCC in 2009 and specified the proper goal as by the Basic Act on Green Growth that went into effect at April, 2010. First of all the enlargement of green building construction has been suggested as a worldwide strategy to achieve the green house gas reduction. Building area is one of most important sectors for the countermeasure of climate change agreement and the achievement of national green house gas reduction goal and the need to reduce its green house gases has been increased accordingly. The objective of the study is to examine the status and characterization of mass energy consumption local governmental buildings' green house gas emissions depending on usage (hotel, school, apartment, hospital) through the green house gas emission source unit analysis. The result indicated that the energy source unit was proportional to green house gas source unit and hotel showed the highest green house gas emission source unit per open area of construction unit, followed by hospital, apartment, and then school. In case of apartment, green house gas emission source unit per open area of construction unit decreased as year went on. Meanwhile school building showed a striking increase in the annual energy source unit.

  • Recently, the coverage of urban forests has been rapidly decreasing as the cities are created and expanding. Consequently, there arise urban problems such as heat island effect, urban flooding, urban desertification and so on. In this context, green roof systems is considered to be an efficient alternative to deal with these problems. However, it is difficult to apply green roof to new buildings since the majority of the buildings in cities are already constructed and the demand for new building constructions is not high enough. Therefore, it should be considered to apply green roof system to existing buildings for resolving various problems. This study evaluates heating and cooling energy consumption based on the combination of passive design factors such as wall, roof, window insulation in addition to a green roof system applied to an existing house by using an energy simulation program. Total 8 potential improvement cases are developed. Each case is applied to the same house with different insulation standard for simulations. Through the analysis of the simulated cases with the chosen test house, it is confirmed that heating energy consumption decreases as improvement cases are applied, but cooling energy consumption is relatively not much affected by each improvement case. In addition, when each improvement case is applied to already highly insulated house, the effect of thermal energy improvement decreases while the same improvement that is applied to the case with low insulated house tends to yield higher improvement rate.

  • We have examined the relative contributions of representative space weather proxies (geomagnetic aa index) to global warming (Global temperature anomaly) and compared them with that of green house effect characterized CO2 content from 1868 to 2005. For this we used Hadcrut3 temperature anomaly (Ta) data, aa index taken at two anti-podal subauroral stations (Canberra Australia and hartland England), and the CO2 data come from historical ice core records. From the comparison between Ta and aa index, we found several interesting results: (1) the linear correlation coefficient between two parameters increases until 1990 and then decreases rapidly, and (2) the scattered plots between two parameters shows different patterns before and after 1990. A partial correlation of Ta and two quantities (aa, CO2) also shows that the geomagnetic effect (aa index) is dominant until about 1990 and the CO2 effect becomes much more important after then. These results imply that the green house effect become very important since at least 1990. For a further analysis, we simply assume that Ta (total) = Ta (aa) + Ta (CO2) and made a linear regression between Ta and aa index from 1868 to 1990. A linear model is then made from the linear regression between energy consumption (a proxy of CO2 effect) and Ta (total) - Ta (aa) since 1990. This linear model makes it possible to predict the temperature anomaly in 2030, about 1 degree higher than the present temperature, which is much larger than in the previous century.

  • $CO_2$ is known as the major source of the green house effect and the volume produced from electricity generation and transportation sector in Korea constitutes the large portion. In order to reduce the green house effect, several treatment methods can be the major research topics such as the scheme to fundamentally restrict the production of $CO_2$ creation, to perfectly sequestrate the produced $CO_2$, to reuse the separated $CO_2$, or to permanently dispose $CO_2$ in an appropriate storage site. Among of them, R&D strategy and geotechnical research issues are explored in this paper in an effort to realize geological storage for the sequestrated $CO_2$ in local storage sites. $CO_2$ is known as the major source of the green house effect and the volume produced from electricity generation and transportation sector in Korea constitutes the large portion. • This study was carried out to analyze the effect of the farm management and productivity increase of cabbages growing in the plastic house based on application of green manure crops such as silage corn, haussolgo (Sorghum bicolar L. Moench), hairy vetch, etc. According to the effect of green manure crop grown in summer season, the biomass amount of the silage corn was the highest; 7,630 kg per 10a, the next was haussolgo, 5,620 kg per 10a. In terms of the fertilizer ingredients, the first of forage soybean was 3.84% of nitrogen, whereas hairy vetch was 1.74% of phosphate and kalium, 4.74%. Productivity increase of cabbages was the highest in the haussolgo plot of which the yield of showed 10,090 kg per 10a and the farm household income would be worth 8,053 thousand won. By growing forage crops in the winter season, the biomass amount was the highest in the mixed sowing plot with rye (50%) and hairy vetch (50%) of 3,590 kg per 10a, whereas the productivity in the mixed seeding with rye (70%) and hairy vetch (30%) was highest, 6,249 kg per 10a and the farm household income would be worth 7,387 thousand won. Judging from these results, more practical on-farm research on applying different green manure crops as a basal fertilizer with cabbage in the plastic house should be considered to analyze the farm management and the farm household income at different sites.
