  • This study aimed to evaluate the ability to reduce flood damage caused by abnormal rainfall events due to climate change by utilizing a blue-green roof (BGF), a type of rooftop greening technology. For two buildings with the same roof area, a BGF was installed in the experimental group, a general roof was configured in the control group, and rainfall runoff was compared. A total of 10 rainfall events were tested and analyzed by classifying them into three rainfall classes (less than 10 mm, less than 100 mm, and more than 100 mm). There was a reduction of 100% in the case of 10 mm or less of rainfall, 84. 7% in the case of 100 mm or less, and 39.8% in the case of 100 mm or more. Although this study showed that a BGF was effective in reducing rainfall runoff, additional experiments and analyses of various factors affecting rainfall runoff reduction are needed to generalize the results of the study. This research methodology may be used to develop a method for evaluating the resilience of a BGF to flood damage due to climate change.

  • Temporal variability in lake phytoplankton is controlled by a complex between hydrological and chemical factors, and biological interactions. We explored annual change of phytoplankton in Lake Daecheong, using phytoplankton analysis data from 1997 to 2002 (except 2000). The standing crop of phytoplankton was ranged from 3.5 x 10 to 1.5 x 106 cells mL$^{-1}$ and the highest mean value was at site 1. The class composition ratios of phytoplankton standing crop were divided into three classes. From January to March, diatoms showed a dominance (68.1-77.7%). From April to June, diatoms were mixed with cryptomonad etc. or blue-green algae. From July to October, blue-green algae showed a dominance (54.7-84.0%). In the case of green algae, the class composition ratios were below 10%. But green algae appeared all the year round.

  • The physiological activities of cultivated Korean blue mussel (Mytilus edulis) and New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) were analyzed and compared. Both hot water extracts of blue mussel flesh (BMF) and green-lipped mussel flesh (GMF) showed increased activities of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). BMF showed increased ADH and slightly decreased ALDH activities compared to GMF. 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity of BMF was higher than that of GMF at the same concentration. BMF and GMF showed similar inhibitory activity against angiotensin converting enzyme at a concentration of 30 mg/mL. These results suggest that cultivated Korean blue mussel has similar physiological activity with New Zealand green-lipped mussel.

  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the northwestern water of Jeju Island, based on seven oceanographic stations in July, 1980. Submarine daylight intensity was measured at intervals of 5m depth in the upper 70m layer by using the underwater irradiameter(Kahlsico #268 WA360). The mean absorption coefficients of the sea water were appeared as 0.106(0.084-0.152), 0.135(0.106-0.184), 0.089(0.069-0.130) for clear, red, green, and blue color respectively. The transparency ranged from 11 to 19 meters(mean 16.1m). The mean water color in this area was 4.3(3-5) in Forel scales. The relation between absorption coefficient(k) and transparency(D) was k=1.66/D, k=2.12/D, k=1.38/D, and k=1.51/D for clear, red green, and blue color respectively. The rates of light penetration for clear, red, green, and blue color in four different depths were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rates of light penetration in proportion to depths were as follows; clear : 56.57%(5m), 20.54%(15m), 4.60%(30m), 0.68%(50m). red : 50.14%(5m), 2.37%(30m), 0.23%(50m). green : 62.29%(5m), 26.43%(15m), 7.74%(30m), 1.56%(50m). blue : 59.29%(5m), 23.43%(15m), 6.10%(30m), 1.08%(50m).

  • The present study summarizes the occurrence, distribution and autecology of 12 taxa of the class Cyanophyceae collected from several swamps, reservoir and highland wetlands in South Korea from 2009 to 2012. A new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 taxa of blue-green algae newly recorded are described and illustrated. Anabaena koreana is similar to A. oumiana, A. spiroides and A. crassa in that the trichomes form regular coils. However, A. koreana is distinguished from these three species by the morphological characteristics of the vegetative cell, heterocyst, and akinet shape and size. This study considers 12 blue-green algal species, including a new species, Anabaena koreana sp. nov. and 11 species that are recorded for the first time in the Korean freshwater algal flora. Among them, the genus Nostochopsis Wood ex Bornet et Flahault 1886 had not previously been recorded in Korea.

  • The blue-green algae which caused odor problem in the tap water are difficult to precipitate in sedimentation basin and clogged the filter void rapidly. The studies of this paper were not only oxidation, coagulation and sedimentation processes for effectively removing blue-green algae but yellow clay and polyamine for verification as coagulants aids. The results of this research are summarized as follows: Higher ozone dose(C) and longer contact time(T) were needed for a high degree of removing blue-green algae efficiency. the removal rate of blue-green algae was proportional to the $C\times T$ value. The removal percent of chlorophyll-a by sedimentation and filter without pre-ozonation was about 75% but 1 mg/L pre-ozonation could increase the removal percent of chlorophyll-a to 99% and more pre-ozonation could remove completely. Though the removal efficiency of turbidity could increased by high dose of chlorination, the dissolved organic carbon was increased. More chlorine dose from 4 to 10 mg/L dissolved organic carbon was decreased. Using yellow clay as coagulant aids increased density of floc so the settling velocity of floc become rising but polyamine could not increase settling velocity of floc though it could formated large floc.

  • In order to understand the impact for decomposition of blue-green algae Microcystis on water quality, the algae were cultivated with collection of natural population during approximately one month, when water-bloom of Microcystis dominated at August 31, 1999 in the lower part of the Okchon Stream. The enrichment of inorganic NㆍP nutrients didn't in algal assay and the effect of Microcystis on water duality was assessed from the variation of nutrients by algal senescence. Microcystis population seemed to play a temporary role of sink for nutrients in the water body. Initial algal density of Microcystis was 2.3×10/sup 6/ cells/㎖. When Microcystis population died out under light condition, algal NㆍP nutrients between 9∼12 days affected to increase of biomass after reuse by other algal growth as soon as release to the ambient water. However, cellular nutrients under dark condition were almost moved into the water during algal cultivation. NH₄, NO₃ and SRP concentration were highly increased with 160, 17 and 79 folds, respectively relative to the early. As a result, the senescence of Microcystis population seemed to be an important biological factor in which cause more eutrophy and increase of explosive algal development by a lot of nutrients transfer to water body. There are significantly observed an effort of reduce for production of inner organic matters such a phytoplankton as well as load pollutants from watershed in side of the water quality management of reservoir.

  • In this study, we used various dyes from natural pigments such as tumeric, goldthread, indigo, pagoda tree flower, sappanwood, and safflower to make the Hanji wallpaper with super eight colors of yellow, orange, green, turquoise, violet, red, blue, and magenta. As a result of measuring the lightfastness, magenta dyed with sappanwood showed the worst effect, but blue dyed with only indigo showed the best effect. In terms of the spot test by water, red wallpaper dyed with safflower showed the clear spot, but blue, turquoise, and green dyed with indigo resulted in a little spot. The orange, violet, and magenta dyed with goldthread and sappanwood showed antibacterial activity, and the turquoise, green, and blue also has a little antibacterial activity. However, yellow and red didn't show the some result as expected. In the experiment for efficiency of formaldehyde removal, all Hanji wallpapers dyed with natural pigments showed the significant removal effect of formaldehyde, especially turquoise and red were the highest.
