Comparison of Agronomic Charateristics and Productivity of Sorghum$\times$Sudangrass Hybrids (수수$\times$수단그라스 잡종의 생육특성과 생산성)

  • This experiment was carried out to select the $Sorghum{\times}Sudangrass$ hybrid of high productivity suited for soiling, and growth characteristics and productivity of 9 cultivars of introduced $Sorghum{\times}Sudangrass$ hybrids have been evaluated at the experimental forage field, College of Natural Science of Kon-Kuk university in Chungju over three years. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. NC855, Sordan79 and T. E haygrazer were taller than the other varieties as range from 209cm to 213cm. while Supergrazer was the shortest type as 173cm. Among the nine varieties used, NC855 and Pioneer 988 were classified as early maturing varieties, but G83F, FP5 and Supergrazer were classified as lately maturing varieties. 2. The stem diameter of Supergnzer and Sordan79 were thicker than the other varieties, while NC855, Garst757 and FP5 were thin. 3. The tillers of $Sorghum{\times}Sudangrass$ hybrids were ranged from 3.1 to 4.0 and NC855 and FP5 had 4.0 tillers per plant. A Study on the Food Habits of Dairy Goats (Saanen) Fed with Various Roughage Sources (여러 가지 조사료를 급여한 유 산양 (Saanen)의 채식습성에 관한 연구)

  • The object of this experiment was to investigate the food habits of dairy goats fed with various roughage sources. The experimental trials were conducted at Chungnam National University in 2007. The experimental roughages include five sources and 25 species in all; grass sources: 5 species (Lolium perenne, Festuca arundinacea, Poa pratensis, Agrostis alba and mixed grass, legume sources: 5 species (Trifolium pratense, Medicago sativa, Trifolium repens, Melilotus officinalis and Vicia villosa), browse sources : 5 species (Quercus serrata Thunb., Prunus jamasakura Sieb., Quercus aliena Blume, Robinia pseudoaccacia and Pinus densiflora), weed sources: 5 species (Artemisia princeps Pampanini, Erigeron canadensis, Alopecurus aegualis Sobolewski, Echinochloa crusgalli var. frumentacea (Roxb.) Wight and Rumex crispus), and native grass sources: 5 species (Zoysia japonica Steudel, Agropyron tsukushiense var. transiens (Hack) Ohwi., Arundinella hirta (Thunb.) Tanaka, Miscanthus sinensis Anderss and Phragmites comunis Trin). Ten dairy goats(Saanen) were selected which had nearly the same body weight(average 31kg). Experimental roughages were prepared by 0.5kg per 1 species fed to dairy goats, and the experiment was carried out from 09:00 to 18:00. The chemical composition and dry matter digestibility of each roughage source and species were significantly different at the sampling area, plant species, growth stages and cutting period. The dairy goats ate more roughages which had low fibrous contents, but high dry matter digestibility. Among all the 25 species of roughages, the favorite intake species order by dairy goat was observed like this: perennial ryegrass, tall fescue and red clover, respectively, and the lower intake species order was Rumex crispus. On the other hand, compared to each roughage source, total intake amount by dairy goats was showed as forage grasses (59.0%) which contained grasses(33.3%) and legumes (25.7%), browse (19.6%), weeds (15.9%) and native grasses (5.5%). Based on the result, the food intake type of dairy goats seems to be closer to grazer type.

Effect of Heading and BMR types on the Agronomic Characteristics, Forage Yield and Quality of Sorghum × Sudangrass Hybrid (출수형태와 BMR이 수수×수단그라스 교잡종의 생육특성, 생산성 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the agronomic characteristics, forage yield and quality of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrid at two locations (Sungju and Cheonan) in 2009. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with three replications. The eight recommended hybrids used in this experiment were 'Sordan 79', 'SX17', 'Honey chew', 'Honey grazer', 'G7', 'Jumbo', 'Green star' and 'GT56' hybrids. The heading of four hybrids were headed at both region, Sungju and Cheonan. There are no big differences in general agronomic characteristics among hybrids, but brix scale of heading and BMR (brown mid rib) types were higher than those of other hybrids. Dry matter (DM) and plant height of heading type hybrids were higher than those of headless types. The fresh, DM and TDN (total digestible nutrients) yields of heading type hybrids were also higher than those of headless types, and BMR types were lower than others. The crude protein and crude ash contents of headless hybrids were higher than those of heading hybrids, while its non-fiber carbohydrate (NFC) content showed the opposite results. The acid detergent fiber (ADF) and NFC contents of BMR types were lower than others. The results of this experiment indicates that heading hybrids were more higher than headless hybrids in the agronomics and forage yield of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass. However heading types were lower headless types in quality of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass. And BMR hybrids were also high quality of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrid because of higher brix content and lower ADF content among tested hybrids.

Effects of Cutting Frequency on Yield and Nutritive Value Between Heading and Headless Varieties of Sorghum$\times$Sudangrass Hybrid (수수$\times$수단그라스 교잡종의 출수형과 불출수형 품종간 예취횟수가 수량성 및 사료가치에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of cutting frequency on dry matter yield and nutritive value between heading and headless varieties of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid in 1998. Treatments were var. TE hay grazer(heading type) and Jumbo(headless type) as main plot, and 1, 2, and 3 cutting times per a year as sub plot. Although plant height of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was no significant difference among treatments, headless type was very slightly higher than that of heading type, and both of variety decreased with 1, 2, and 3 cutting times in order. Also, dry matter yield of sorghum~sudangrass hybrid was no significant difference between heading and headless type. Dry matter yield of first cutting plot in heading type and in headless type was the higher than those of second and third cutting plot. Acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber of headless type were slightly higher than that of heading type. Acid detergent fiber of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was highest at first cutting plot in both varieties. Neutral detergent fiber of second cutting plot in heading type and first cutting plot in headless type were the highest respectively. In vitro dry matter digestibility of headless type was very slightly higher than that of heading type. And in vitro dry matter digestibility of second cutting plot was the highest in both varieties. In vitro digestible dry matter of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid was no significant difference among treatments. The results demonstrated that although there was not significant difference, cultivation of headless type and first cutting plot per a year were very good for nutritive value and DM yield of sorghumxsudangrass hybrid as summer forage crops in Korea. Studies on the Nitrate Concentration, Sugar Content and Intake of Four Sorghum X Sudangrass Hybrids Grown under Application of Animal Manure (가축분 시용조건에서 4종 수수 X 수단그라 교잡종의 질산태질소 함량과 당도 및 채식률 비교 연구)

  • A field experiment was carried out to compare the nitrate nitrogen concentration, sugar content and animal intake of low $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) grown under application of animal manure in 1995. The application amount of animal manure were 40MT in cattle manure, and 30MT/ha in swine and poultry manure. The four NLCF's recommended hybrids used in this study were Pioneer 988, TE-Haygrazer and NC+ 855 (heading type), and Jumbo(headless type). The nitrate nitrogen concentration of forage was 365mg/kg at 50~60cm of plant height, 501mg at 100~120cm, and 502mg at 200~220cm, regardless of animal manure type and cultivar. The nitrate nitrogen concentration of NC+ 855 and P 988 was 519 and 526mg, respectively, and were higher than that(317mg) of Jumbo(P<0.05). The nitrate nioogen concentration of stems was 376mg, and significantly higher than that(135mg) of leaves(P<0.05) regardless of cultivar, and lower parts of stems and leaves were higher than those of upper parts of plants. The sugar contents of four $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids were ranged between 3.1 and $3.7^{\circ}$ in cattle manure, 2.9 and $3.3^{\circ}$ in swine manure, and 2.8 and $4.9^{\circ}$ in poultry manure. The sugar content of NC+ 855 was the highest as $3.9^{\circ}$, p 988 was second as $3.4^{\circ}$, and then TE-Haygrazer and Jumbo were lower as $3.2^{\circ}$ and $2.9^{\circ}$, respectively. Animal intake of sorghum ${\times}$ sudangrass hybrids P 988 and NC+ 855 were slightly higher than those of Jumbo and TE-Haygrazer grown under application of cattle manure. Also the average intake of P 988 was a little higher than that of Jumbo. However, there were no significant differences of forage intake among few recommended $sorghum{\times}sudangrass$ hybrids.
