Gravity characteristics are investigated in the vicinity of the DASAN scientific station, located at the Svalbard Archipelago, the Arctic using ArcGP data. Boundary effects of free-air gravity anomalies, which appeared generally at the continental margin, are erased after Bouguer correction was applied. Complete Bouguer anomalies produced after terrain correction by GrOPO30 show that gravity anomalies increase from continent to marine. This phenomena seem to be related to the rise of Moho discontinuity. The cut-off frequency of 0.16 was decided after power spectrum analysis and the gravity anomalies were divided into two parts. Residual anomalies in high frequency part show that characteristics of high values along the faults and of low values related to thick sediments in the continent. Characteristic is low values from basement subsidence of continental slope or thick sediments in the marine. The undulation of Moho discontinuity from 3-D inversion modeling show typical characteristics of continental margin that become higher from Svalbard archipelago to Knipovich ridge bordering Eurasian plate.
The geometry of the gravity-type anchorage changes depends on various factors such as the installation location, ground type, and relationship with the upper structure. In particular, the anchorage geometry embedded in the ground is an important design factor because it affects the pull-out resistance of the anchorage. This study examined the effect of four parameters, related to anchorage geometry and embedded ground conditions, on the pull-out resistance in the gravity-type anchorage through two-dimensional finite element analysis, and presented a guide for major design variables. The four parameters include the 1) flight length of the stepped anchorage (m), 2) flight height of the stepped anchorage (n), 3) the anchorage heel height (b), and 4) the thickness of the soil (e). It was found that as the values of m increased and the values of n decreased, the pull-out resistance of the gravity-type anchorage increased. This trend is related to the size of the contact surface between the anchorage and the rock, and it was confirmed that the value of n, which has the largest change rate of the contact surface between the anchorage and the rock, has the greatest effect on the pull-out resistance of the anchorage. Additionally, the most effective design was achieved when the ratio of the step to the bottom of the anchorage (m) was greater than 0.7, and m was found to be an important factor in the pull-out resistance behavior of the anchorage.
Gravity and Magnetic survey data were analyzed to investigate the geophysical characteristics and regional geological structures of the southwestern Yellow Sea. The set of data about the southwestern part of the Yellow Sea in Korea was one collected by the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) in 2003, 2004, and 2005. The Yellow Sea has a few basins and the study area also includes parts of the Heuksan Basin and the East China Sea Basin. The bathymetry of the study area ranges from about ?40 m southwestward near China to about 150 m northeastward near Korea. The bathymetry has the gentle rise and fall and the smooth slope. The gravity anomalies, from sea surface gravity and satellite gravity data, reflect the basement rocks rather than the smooth bathymetry. The gravity anomalies are higher on Northeastern part of the study area and lower over the South of the Heuksan Basin. The analytic signal from the Bouguer anomaly shows higher anomalous zones near the boundaries of the basins. The magnetic anomalies and the analytic signal, from the magnetic data, suggest that the complex anomalies on the Northern part are attributed to the volcanic intrusions and that the smooth patterns in the Southern part are based on the lack of the intrusions. The power spectrum analysis of the Bouguer anomalies and the magnetic anomalies indicate that the depth to the Moho discontinuity varies from about 30.2 to 28.3 km and that the depths of the basement rocks and the Eocene discontinuity range from about 8.4 to 8 km and from about 1.5 to 1.7 km, respectively. The inversion of the Bouguer anomaly shows that the Moho depth to the Western part of the study area near China is slightly deeper than the Eastern part near Korea. The result of 2-D gravity modeling has a good coherence with the results of the analytic signal, the power spectrum analysis, and the inversion.

A theoretical formulation based on the linearized potential theory, the Descartes' rule and the extremum optimization method is presented to calculate the critical distance of lifting points of the fully balanced hoist vertical ship lift, and to study pitching stability of the ship lift. The overturning torque of the ship chamber is proposed based on the Housner theory. A seven-free-degree dynamic model of the ship lift based on the Lagrange equation of the second kind is then established, including the ship chamber, the wire rope, the gravity counterweights and the liquid in the ship chamber. Subsequently, an eigenvalue equation is obtained with the coefficient matrix of the dynamic equations, and a key coefficient is analyzed by innovative use of the minimum optimization method for a stability criterion. Also, an extensive influence of the structural parameters contains the gravity counterweight wire rope stiffness, synchronous shaft stiffness, lifting height and hoists radius on the critical distance of lifting points is numerically analyzed. With the Runge-Kutta method, the four primary dynamical responses of the ship lift are investigated to demonstrate the accuracy/reliability of the result from the theoretical formulation. It is revealed that the critical distance of lifting points decreases with increasing the synchronous shaft stiffness, while increases with rising the other three structural parameters. Moreover, the theoretical formulation is more applicable than the previous criterions to design the layout of the fully balanced hoist vertical ship lift for the ensuring of the stability.
Cooling seawater of thermal power plant which amounts about 5 cms per 100 MWe has hydro energy of about 3,000 kW at the thermal power plant complex, but this useful hydro energy has not been developed. Therefore, the feasibility study on hydro energy development of three power plants located in the southern and western coast of Korea was performed. Three target power plants are Samcheonpo, Boryeong and Hadong thermal power plant. The design head to discharge cooling water by gravity and the head caused by tidal level in the southwestern coastal area, could be used for the production of electric power. The various alternatives were studied and technical feasibility and economical efficiency were clearly proved.
In this paper, a total stress analysis method for gravity quay walls is suggested. The method can evaluate the displacement of the quay walls considering the effect of excess pore pressure developed in backfill soils. This method changes the stiffness of backfill soils according to the expected magnitude of the excess pore pressure. For practical application, evaluation methods are suggested for determining the excess pore pressure ratio developed in the backfill soils and the backfill stiffness that corresponds to the excess pore pressure ratio. This method is important in practical applications because the displacement of the quay walls can be evaluated by using only the basic input properties in the total stress analysis. The applicability of the suggested method was verified by comparing the results of the analysis with the results of 1-g shaking table tests. From the comparison, it was found that the calculated displacements from the suggested method showed good agreement with the measured displacements of the quay walls. It was also found that the excess pore pressure in backfill soils is a governing influence on the dynamic behavior of quay walls.
As a part of the study to know the deep geological structure of the Ogcheon Zone. gravity survey is performed along the survey line of which direction is roughly perpendicular to major faults of the Zone. Recent studies for petrology. geochemistry. and structural geology in south-western Ogcheon Zone are outlined. Raw gravity data are corrected to obtain Bouguer anomalies and the anomalies are interpreted to obtain subsurface structures along the survey line. The subterranean density discontinuities determined from the power spectrum method are appeared at depths of 15.4 km and 2.8 km. It is considered that the depth of 15.4 km indicates the boundary between upper and lower crust. Probably the depth of 2.8 km represents the boundary between upper volcanic formations and granites. Alternatively. the observed Bouguer anomalies are interpreted in terms of lateral density variation model. Finally. the subterranean geological structure to satisfy the Bouguer anomalies is presented through the iterative forward method in which results obtained from surface geological informations and from the inverse method are adopted as an initial model.
In this study, lightweight aggregate was made from basalt stone powder sludge. Clay and glass powder were respectively added from 0 to 20 wt% and from 0 to 100 wt%. The glass powder helped to form glassy phase which trapped generating gas in the materials. $CaCO_3$ helping bloating process was added from 0 to 10 wt%. It was possible to produce lightweight aggregate at range from $1150^{\circ}C$ to $1200^{\circ}C$. The specimen was heated in furnace at 1100, 1150 and $1200^{\circ}C$ for 15 min, respectively, to sinter aggregates. Chemical composition of materials were determined, and characteristics were analyzed, including specific gravity, water absorption. Lightweight aggregate which was heated at $1200^{\circ}C$ had specific gravity of $0.53g/cm^3$, water absorption of 3.08%, and this value satisfied KS L 8551 standard.
According to the regulation of IMO, oil discharge from ships is allowed under 15ppm only and an oil filtering equipment is essential. However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. A parallel plate type oily water separator which is one of gravity type separators can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is an efficient method in dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. This work is focused on the fundamental investigation of the performance of the plate type oily water separator by visualization method and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in separating process and it was found that an important point to minimize a vortex flow is to flow a large amount of fluid in space of the plates in order to promote the efficiency of separation.
This paper is concerned chiefly with the method of porous foam manufacture using basalt stone powder sludge. The hydrogen peroxide($H_2O_2$) of bloating agent has lots of problems to manufacture porous lightweight aggregate due to fast reaction rate with cement or calcium hydroxide($Ca(OH)_2$). The $H_2O_2$ injecting method using nozzle for manufacturing porous lightweight aggregate is proposed, in this study. This method is to inject $H_2O_2$ at the pressure of 10 MPa on upper side of slurry mixing materials such as stone powder sludge and quick-lime(CaO) by injector. The specimen was dried in furnace at $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and cured at ambient temperature for 30 days. We analyzed the characteristics including specific gravity and water absorption. The experiments were found that the porous foam has low specific gravity, high water absorption and uniform distribution of porous more than manufactured foam by general bloating methods.
