  • This paper develops a computational model for estimating the ride quality of a cabover type large-sized truck in a double wheel bumpy ride test. The computational model is developed using ADAMS. To verify the developed model, an actual vehicle double wheel bumpy ride test is performed. In the test, the vehicle maintains a straight course with a constant velocity such that the front two wheels are passed the bump at the same time. The bump has the height of 60mm, and the width of 550mm. In the test, four velocities are used. They are 10kph, 20kph, 30kph and 40kph. Since the large-sized truck's center of gravity location is high, and its weight is heavy, it is a quite severe test condition to perform the test with more than 30kph velocity. In the test, vertical accelerations on the floor of the cab are measured. The measured accelerations are compared to the simulation results. From the comparison, it is shown that the developed model can predict not only the measured acceleration's tendency but also peak accelerations quite well. In this paper, the validated model is utilized to compare the ride quality between a vehicle with a multi-leaf spring and a vehicle with a tapered leaf spring in the front suspension system in a double bumpy ride test.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the possibility of identifying joint damping property through commercially available isokinetic ergometer (BIODEX). The proposed method is to estimate the damping torque of the knee joint from the difference between the external joint torque for maintaining isokinetic movement and the gravity torque of the lower leg. The damping torque was estimated at various joint angular velocities, from which the damping property would be derived. Measurement setup was composed of the BIODEX system with an external force sensor and Labview system. Matlab was used in the analysis of the damping property. The experimental result showed that the small variation in angular velocity due to acceleration and deceleration of the crank arm resulted in greater change of inertial torque than the damping torque. Therefore, the estimation of damping property from the isokinetic movement is difficult.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the decomposition capacity for organic matter by microbe of tidal flat sediments (Hajae, Dongjin and Mankyung). The decomposition rate constants (K') have been determined by Thomas slope method and compared with the values of each tidal flats. The decomposition rates of organic matter by microbe were initially very slow, but at the end of 12 hours, very sharply increased. The values of decomposition rate constant for Dongjin, Mankyung and Hajae tidal flat sediment were 1.364$day^{-1}$/, 1.080d$day^{-1}$ and 0.735$day^{-1}$, respectively. The decomposition rate constant of Dongjin tidal flat sediment which affected by livestock wastewater was higher than others. The decomposition quantity (mg/g/day) of organic matter by microbe of tidal flat sediments was 0.4mg/g/day for Dongjin, 0.36mg/g/day for Mankyung and 0.36mg/g/day for Hajae. The average of decomposition quantity was 0.37mg/g/day. To calculate purification capacity (kg/ha) of organic matter by microbe, we applied to two assumption ; 1) biological action by microbe is occur within 0.1cm under surface 2) specific gravity of sediment are 2.5g/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The purification capacity of organic matter by microbe of tidal flat sediment was calculated to 9.25kg/ha. The relationships between decomposition rate constant (K') and ignition loss (I. L), chemical oxygen demand by sediment (CO $D_{sed}$), total carbon(TC), silt and clay as index of organic matter were a high positive($R^2$=0.97~1.00).

  • This paper reports the single-input-single-output cascade control by using 1-axis attitude control test-bench for quad-rotor UAV. The test-bench was designed as a see-saw shape using 2 motors and propellers, and to enable changing the center of gravity with the center of gyration using ballast. The experiment was carried out by constructing a PID-PID controller having a cascade structure with the test-bench. The SIMC based PID gain tuning process, which makes PID gain tuning easy, was grafted to cascade control. To graft SIMC method, the system parameter estimation result was conducted with second order time delay model by using Matlab-Simulink. Gain tuning was conducted by simulating with estimated system parameter. In this paper, the conventional application of SIMC was conducted and improved application was proposed for improving stability at tuning process.

  • Among numerous localization schemes proposed specifically for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), the range-free localization algorithms based on the received signal strength indication (RSSI) have attracted considerable research interest for their simplicity and low cost. As a typical range-free algorithm, Approximate Point In Triangulation test (APIT) suffers from significant estimation errors due to its theoretical defects and RSSI inaccuracy. To address these problems, a novel localization method called FIAPIT, which is a combination of an improved APIT (IAPIT) and a fuzzy logic system, is proposed. The proposed IAPIT addresses the theoretical defects of APIT in near (it's defined as a point adjacent to a sensor is closer to three vertexes of a triangle area where the sensor resides simultaneously) and far (the opposite case of the near case) cases partly. To compensate for negative effects of RSSI inaccuracy, a fuzzy system, whose logic inference is based on IAPIT, is applied. Finally, the sensor's coordinates are estimated as the weighted average of centers of gravity (COGs) of triangles' intersection areas. Each COG has a different weight inferred by FIAPIT. Numerical simulations were performed to compare four algorithms with varying system parameters. The results show that IAPIT corrects the defects of APIT when adjacent nodes are enough, and FIAPIT is better than others when RSSI is inaccuracy.

  • The responses of steel buildings with perimeter moment resisting frames (PMRF) with medium size columns (W14) are estimated and compared with those of buildings with deep columns (W27), which are selected according to two criteria: equivalent resistance and equivalent weight. It is shown that buildings with W27 columns have no problems of lateral torsional, local or shear buckling in panel zone. Whether the response is larger for W14 or W27 columns, depends on the level of deformation, the response parameter and the structural modeling under consideration. Modeling buildings as two-dimensional structures result in an overestimation of the response. For multiple response parameters, the W14 columns produce larger responses for elastic behavior. The axial load on columns may be significantly larger for the buildings with W14 columns. The interstory displacements are always larger for W14 columns, particularly for equivalent weight and plane models, implying that using deep columns helps to reduce interstory displacements. This is particularly important for tall buildings where the design is usually controlled by the drift limit state. The interstory shears in interior gravity frames (GF) are significantly reduced when deep columns are used. This helps to counteract the no conservative effect that results in design practice, when lateral seismic loads are not considered in GF of steel buildings with PMRF. Thus, the behavior of steel buildings with deep columns, in general, may be superior to that of buildings with medium columns, using less weight and representing, therefore, a lower cost.

  • This paper proposes a new double-talk detection algorithm which is based on the fuzzy rules, in the adaptive echo canceller of telecommunication system. In this method, the two inputs of the fuzzy inference for detecting double-talk condition are used. One is the cross-correlation coefficient between the error signal and the primary signal which is the summation of the real echo signal and the near-end signal. The other one is the cross-correlation coefficient between the estimation error signal and the primary signal. The fuzzy controller makes a fuzzification for two inputs by the membership functions of trapezoid does the max-min composition using if-then rules. The composed result is defuzzificated by the center gravity method. And by defuzzificated values, the double-talt the echo path variance, and the echo path variance during the double-talk are detected. It is confirmed by computer simulation that this fuzzy double-talk detector is able to estimate the double talk and the echo path variation condition, and even track echo path variation more accurately than the conventional algorithm during the double-talk period.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm to visualize radio wave environment based on the measured Received Signal Strength Indication( RSSI) and 3D geographic information. We estimate the source position using the circumcenter of the triangle and visualize the radio wave environment using the empirical propagation models. A mode seeking algorithm(mean-shift clustering) is used to seek the peak points and the center of gravity is utilized to reduce the estimation errors. Our approach finds its applications in the radio wave monitoring systems for the efficient utilization of radio resources.

  • Forest sequesters large terrestrial carbon which is stored in the biomass of tree and plays a key role in reducing atmospheric carbon. Thus, the objectives of the present study were to assess the growing stock, above ground biomass and carbon in trees of Ponda watershed of Rajouri district (J&K). IRS-P6 LISS-III satellite data of October 2010 was used for preparation of land use/land cover map and forest density map of the study area by visual interpretation. The growing stock estimation was done for the study area as well as for the sample plots laid in forest and agriculture fields. The growing stock and biomass of trees were estimated using species specific volume equations and using specific gravity of wood, respectively. The total growing stock in the study area was estimated to be $0.25million\;m^3$ which varied between $85.94m^3/ha$ in open pine to $11.58m^3/ha$ in degraded pine forest. However in agriculture area, growing stock volume density of $14.85m^3/ha$ was recorded. Similarly, out of the total biomass (0.012 million tons) and carbon (0.056 million tons) in the study area, open pine forest accounted for the highest values of 43.74 t/ha and 19.68 t/ha and lowest values of 5.68 t/ha and 2.55 t/ha, respectively for the degraded pine forest. The biomass and carbon density in agriculture area obtained was 5.49 t/ha and 2.47 t/ha, respectively. In all the three forest classes Pinus roxburghii showed highest average values of growing stock volume density, biomass and carbon.

  • Physical damage to fruits and vegetables caused by shock degrades the value of product in the fresh market. In order to design a product/packaging system to protect the product, the G-factor to the product that causes shock damage needs to be determined. The shock fragility of organisms such as fruits with a concept correspondent to the G-factor of industrial products was calculated and we defined the allowable bio-shock fragility index as the value divided peak acceleration that was generated in safe drop height by standard acceleration of gravity. We did modeling for safe drop hight that would prevent fruits from damage by drop tests and tried to estimate the allowable bio-shock fragility index of pears and apples for optimum packaging design. The bio-shock fragility index of pears was in the range of $0.74{\sim}2.29\;G$, while apples had a slightly higher value than that of pears, of $0.51{\sim}2.98\;G$. This result shows accordance with the general fact that apples have a firmer structure and get less damage from the same impact. Based on this result, it is possible to create an optimum packaging design by providing a damage standard by impact.
