패널중력모형을 통한 한국 자동차산업의 교역패턴과 자유무역협정의 영향 분석 (Empirical Analysis on Trade Pattern of Korean Motor Industry and Effect of Free Trade Agreement through Panel Gravity Model)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 패널중력모형을 이용하여 한국 자동차산업의 무역패턴을 분석해 보고, 지역경제권 가입이 한국의 무역에 미치는 효과를 실증적으로 분석하여 이에 따른 시사점을 도출하는데 있다. 본 연구의 분석한 결과에 의하면 한국의 자동차산업 교역은 상대국의 소득수준에 의거한 교역패턴(Per Capita Pattern)보다는 전반적 시장규모에 의거한 교역패턴(GDP Pattern)을 따르고 있음을 알 수 있다. 한편 자유무역협정 체결이 한국 자동차산업 교역규모에 미치는 영향을 살펴본 결과 자동차전체산업의 경우에는 교역이 약 179%, 자동차부품산업의 경우에는 교역이 약 198% 증가되는 무역창출효과가 관찰되었다. 결론적으로 한국 자동차산업의 단기적 교역증대를 위해서는 우선적으로 시장규모가 크고 지리적으로 근접한 국가와 교역하는 것이 더욱 유리할 것으로 예상된다. 그러나 근본적으로 한국 자동차산업의 국제경쟁력 향상을 통한 교역확대를 위해서는 자동차의 소형화 지능화 친환경화로 대변되는 자동차산업의 환경변화에 철저히 대비하고, 핵심기술 보유를 위한 정부와 민간기업의 선제적인 공략과 적극적인 투자가 절실히 요구된다고 할 수 있다.

Relationship Between Dry Ports and Regional Economy: Evidence from Yangtze River Economic Belt

  • With the evolution of containerization and globalization of supply chains, aspects of port functions have made the transition from the sea to the inland region that forms the dry port. To explore the relationship between dry ports and regional economic development, this study uses a gravity model and forecast model to analyze 1,040 observations in 104 cities (22 dry port cities) along the Yangtze River Economic Belt (YREB) from 2008 to 2017. The model includes economic variables, logistics variables, foreign relations variables, and human capital variables. It was found that the dry port is positively correlated with trade volume. Compared with a city without a dry port, the trade volume of a city with a dry port will increase 0.099 times. It can be concluded that a dry port is crucial for the economic development of the YREB. It was also found that per capita GDP as an economic variable, road area and rail number as logistics variables, and foreign relation variables are positively correlated with trade volume, while the human capital variable has no significant effect on trade volume. In addition, governmental policy implications are addressed from the aspects of dry port and industry cluster caused by foreign investment.

Do Roads Enhance Regional Trade? Evidence Based on China's Provincial Data

  • We investigate the impact of roads and highways within the provinces on the regional trade of China using the augmented Gravity Model and theory of modeling trade. We take a panel data covering 31 provinces of China over 20 years period (1998-2017) for the estimations. We apply ARMA-OLS model, fixed and random effects, and robust findings by Hausman test. The results imply that road and highway lengths within the provinces have a significantly positive impact on the value of the province-wise exports. The positive impact is due to the fact the increased coverage of roads and highways increase accessibility to resources and mobility of goods and services within the regions. Moreover, employment in the transportation sector, per capita GDP and population of the provinces also illustrate positive and significant influence on regional exports and trade. The impact of China's WTO accession on regional exports has been positive, while the financial crisis has had a negative impact. The year dummies show that, in the years following the financial crisis, China was able to regress from the external shock as trade within the provinces increased. The increase in exports after financial crisis is mainly due to the government policies and support to every province.

한국의 대아세안 수출에 대한 TBT의 영향 실증분석 (The Effects of Technical Barriers to Trade on Korean Exports to ASEAN Countries)

  • Recently, each country has been using non-tariff barriers (Non-Tariff Barriers, NTB) as a new protection trade policy. In particular, TBT lies at the center of NTB. In this context, we examine the impact of Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) on Korea's exports to ASEAN. Using 10-year statistics from 2007 to 2016 that came into effect with the ASEAN FTA, we analyze the impact of TBT on the Korean exports in the electrical machinery industry (HS85), which accounts for more than 30 percent of Korea's total exports to ASEAN. The results of the empirical analysis using a gravity model showed significant and positive effects in the variables of GDP and real effective exchange rate in each ASEAN country on Korea's exports to ASEAN. As expected, the tariff rate has a negative effect. As for TBT, the key variable of this study, the results are as follows. Although many previous studies reported that TBT has negative impacts on exports, this study could not find any significant impact of TBT and found that Korea's exports of electrical machinery to ASEAN countries are not affected by TBT. Various implications of these results are suggested.

The Impact of Tariffs on Vietnam's Trade in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)

  • The study assesses the impact of tariffs on Vietnam's trade in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Research data was conducted between 2001 and 2018 on the official website of the Uncomtrade and the World Bank. This paper uses the gravity model to estimate the relationship between data series and considers the impact of factors on Vietnam's trade with CPTPP countries. The results have proven that tariff reductions have a positive effect on Vietnam's trade. Besides, the trade openness of Vietnam and CPTPP countries has positive impacts on Vietnam's trade. The study also shows that Real Effective Exchange Rate (REER) between Vietnam's and CPTPP countries' currencies has no strong effect on Vietnam's trade. Based on these findings, the article also suggests a number of policies to promote Vietnam's trade in future. In order to support businesses to better utilize opportunities and promote exports to CPTPP countries, the government of Vietnam should: (1) focus on reducing costs and time to participate in the market for production and business investors; (2) improve business investment environment to mobilize resources for production; and (3) continue to organize information campaigns to raise businesses' awareness of how to take advantage of CPTPP preferences.

한·중·일 3개국의 그린필드형 해외직접투자의 대상국 특성에 대한 실증분석: 국가위험을 중심으로 (Country Characteristics of Greenfield FDI Outflows from Korea, China, and Japan: Focusing on Country Risks)

  • This paper analyses the characteristics of partner countries when multinational firms of Korea, China, and Japan make greenfield FDI in foreign countries. Particularly, this paper applies the gravity model for greenfield FDI flows for the period 2003-2017. This paper finds that multinational firms of Korea, as compared to those of China and Japan, are very significantly and negatively responsive to political risks of partner countries. In contrast, multinational firms of Korea as well as those of China and Japan tend to make greater amounts of greenfield FDI in financially high-risk countries. This result indicates that multinational firms from these three countries should take financial risks of partner countries into more serious consideration.

International Migration and Export Flows: Evidence from the People's Republic of China

  • Since China's opening to international trade, the rapid growth of the country's export sector has been coupled by an intensification of migratory outflows of ethnic Chinese. The literature has already stressed the beneficial role of migration in enhancing bilateral trade. The present paper applies a gravity model in order to capture the impact of migration on Chinese exports for a relatively long period of time (1995-2017) where significant developments take place. We estimated four regressions, each of them confirming the positive network effects of migration for boosting export growth. Apart from the main finding, it appears that the role of institutional and geographical proximity can prove to be complementary for trade enhancement. The results finally suggest mixed effects due to the countries' import openness, indicating that China's free trade agreements acts as a substitute for smoothing trade competition from third countries.

경제통합이 부가가치 기준 무역(TiVA)에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Economic Integration on Trade in Value Added (TiVA))

  • 본 연구는 OECD-WTO의 부가가치 기준 무역(TiVA) 데이터를 이용하여 경제통합이 부가가치 기준 무역에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 연구결과 경제통합은 회원국간의 무역을 통계적으로 유의하게 증가시키는 것을 확인하였다. 이는 전통적 의미의 최종재와 중간재뿐만 아니라 수출에서 차지하는 국내 및 외국의 부가가치 규모도 증가하는 것을 확인하였다. 아울러 경제통합이 국내 및 외국의 부가가치 무역을 증가시키는 효과가 대체로 비슷하여 총수출에서 국내부가가치가 차지하는 비중을 증가시키거나 감소시키지 않는다는 것을 확인하였다.

중력모형을 이용한 서비스업의 지역간 교역계수 추정 (Estimating Interregional Trade Coefficient of Service Industry using the Gravity Model)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 중력모형을 이용하여 서비스업에 대한 지역간 교역계수를 추정하는 것이다. 중력모형을 이용하여 지역간 교역규모를 추정할 때 가장 중요한 점은 바로 종속변수인 지역간 교역자료와 독립변수인 지역간 인력요인 및 지역간 거리를 나타내는데 적용되는 대리변수의 선정이라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 중력모형을 이용하여 서비스업의 지역간 교역규모를 추정할 때 적용 가능한 다양한 대리변수에 따라 네 가지 유형의 모형을 제시하고 이중에서 통계적 설명력이 가장 높은 모형을 선정하고자 하였다. 분석결과, 종속변수로 지역산업연관표의 16개 지역간 서비스업 교역량 자료를 적용하고 독립변수로 이출지역의 서비스업 생산액 자료와 이입지역의 인구규모 그리고 지역간 공간거리를 적용한 모형의 설명력이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 본 연구는 광역자치단체보다 작은 경제단위의 지역을 대상으로 지역산업연관표를 작성하거나 또는 최신의 지역산업연관표를 작성하기 위해 비조사적 방법을 적용하는데 있어 보다 정확한 지역간 교역자료 구축을 위한 방법을 제시하였다는데 의의가 있다고 할 수 있겠다.

The Potential and Efficiency of Aquatic Product Trade between China and South Korea

  • Purpose - This paper assesses the trade potential and efficiency of Korea and China in the aquatic products trade. Trade efficiency and potential are the main factors that affect the growth of a country's trade. In this study, a time-varying stochastic frontier trade gravity model was constructed to analyze the trade potential and efficiency between Korea and China. By integrating the results of trade theory and empirical analysis, measures and suggestions were proposed to encourage the release of trade potential of fish exports between Korea and China. Design/methodology - In this paper, GDP per capita instead of economic size was chosen as an explanatory variable, and population size and relative distance were selected as explanatory variables to measure trade potential. For trade non-efficiency terms, regional organizations, political factors, and economic factors were mainly considered, and variables such as free trade agreements, political stability, regulatory quality, government efficiency, currency freedom, investment freedom, financial freedom, and trade freedom were selected. Panel data for South Korea and 14 aquatic products trading partners (including China) from 2002 to 2020 were used in the empirical analysis. Findings - In the past 19 years, South Korea's export trade potential of aquatic products to China has never been lower than 70%. It was above 90% from 2006 to 2018, and has been at a high level for a long time. This shows that China's aquatic product market has large potential for development. Originality/value - This study examines the effectiveness and potential of South Korea's exports of aquatic items to China in a methodical and comprehensive empirical manner. The evaluation of the export trade potential of South Korea's aquatic goods to China is more precise when the effects of regional organization, political, and economic variables are taken into account in the trade non-efficiency term of the stochastic frontier gravity model. At the same time, we propose to increase the scale of South Korea's aquatic products trade from the perspective of China's demand. This issue of trade studies is underexplored both empirically and in theory, although the issue has long been important to Korean and world trade.
