Flat plate slab systems have been commonly used as a gravity force resisting systems, which should be constructed with lateral force resisting systems such as shear walls and moment resisting frame. ACI 318(2005) allows the Direct design method, the equivalent frame method (ACI-EFM) under gravity loads and the finite-element models, effective beam width models and equivalent frame models under lateral loads. ACI-EFM can be used for gravity loads as well as lateral loads analysis. But the method may not predict the behavior of flat plate slabs under lateral loads. Thus Previous study developed a Modified equivalent frame method(Modified-EFM) which could give more precise answer for flat plate slab under lateral loads. This study is to verified the accuracy of a Modified-EFM under combined lateral and gravity loads. The accuracy of this model is verified by comparing the results using the Modified-EFM with the results of finite element analysis. For this purpose, 7 story building is considered. The analysis results of other existing models are included. The analysis results show that Modified-EFM produces comparable drift and slab internal moments with those obtained from finite element analysis.

In high-rise buildings, an outrigger system is frequently used as a resisting system for lateral loads. Since the outriggers tie exterior columns and an interior core, exterior columns can participate in the lateral load resisting system and the structural resistance capacity can be increased. However, the outriggers contribute for controlling gravity loads as well as lateral loads. The flows of gravity loads can be changed by the members of outriggers, for the purposes of transferring loads to mega-columns, distributing gravity loads equally among vertical members of columns, walls, or piles, minimizing differential settlements in a foundation system, and so on. In this study, by computational structural analyses of high-rise buildings over 100 floors, the effects of outriggers on controlling gravity loads are analyzed. Analyses for 3-dimensional models with or without outrigger members are performed, and then the gravity load distributions in columns and piles and foundation settlements are analyzed. Also, the effects of outriggers on gravity load controls during construction stages as well as after construction are included.

In the previous paper, authors proposed the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM) for the lateral behavior analysis of the flat plate structure subjected to the combined gravity and lateral loads, in which the rotations of torsional members were distributed to the equivalent column and the equivalent slab according to the relative ratio of gravity and lateral loads. In this paper, the lateral behavior of the multi-span flat plate structures under various levels of combined gravity and lateral loads were analyzed by the proposed UEFM, which were compared with test results as well as those estimated by existing models. In addition, to consider the stiffness degradation of the flat plate system after cracking, the stiffness reduction factors for torsional members were derived from the test results of the interior and exterior slab-column connection specimens, based on which the simplified nonlinear push-over analysis method for flat plate structures was proposed. The simplified nonlinear analysis method provided good agreements with test results and is considered to be very useful for the practical design of the flat plate structures under the combined gravity and lateral loads.
Concrete dams are important structures due to retaining amount of water on their reservoir. So such kind of structures have to be designed against static and dynamic loads. Especially considering on critical importance against blasting threats and environmental safety, dams have to be examined according to the blast loads. This paper aims to investigate structural response of concrete gravity dams under blast loads. For the purpose Sarıyar Concrete Gravity Dam in Turkey is selected for numerical application with its 85 m of reservoir height (H), 255 m of reservoir length (3H), 72 m of bottom and 7 m of top widths. In the study, firstly 3D finite element model of the dam is constituted using ANSYS Workbench software considering dam-reservoir-foundation interaction and a hydrostatic analysis is performed without blast loads. Then, nearly 13 tons TNT explosive are considered 20 m away from downstream of the dam and this is modeled using ANSYS AUTODYN software. After that explicit analyses are performed through 40 milliseconds. Lastly peak pressures obtained from analyses are compared to empirical equations in the literature and UFC 3-340-02 standard which provide unified facilities criteria for structures to resist the effects of accidental explosions. Also analyses' results such as displacements, stresses and strains obtained from both hydrostatic and blasting analysis models are compared to each other. It is highlighted from the study that blasting analysis model has more effective than the only hydrostatic analysis model. So it is highlighted from the study that the design of dams should be included the blast loads.
There are two methods to model the plastification of members comprising lumped and distributed plasticity. When a reinforced concrete member experiences inelastic deformations, cracks tend to spread from the joint interface resulting in a curvature distribution; therefore, the lumped plasticity methods assuming plasticity is concentrated at a zero-length plastic hinge section at the ends of the elements, cannot model the actual behavior of reinforced concrete members. Some spread plasticity models including uniform, linear and recently power have been developed to take extended inelastic zone into account. In the aforementioned models, the extended inelastic zones in proximity of critical sections assumed close to connections are considered. Although the mentioned assumption is proper for the buildings simply imposed lateral loads, it is not appropriate for the gravity load effects. The gravity load effects can influence the inelastic zones in structural elements; therefore, the plasticity models presenting the flexibility distribution along the member merely based on lateral loads apart from the gravity load effects can bring about incorrect stiffness matrix for structure. In this study, the linear flexibility distribution model is improved to account for the distributed plasticity of members subjected to both gravity and lateral load effects. To do so, a new model in which, each member is taken as one structural element into account is proposed. Some numerical examples from previous studies are assessed and outcomes confirm the accuracy of proposed model. Also comparing the results of the proposed model with other spread plasticity models illustrates glaring error produced due to neglecting the gravity load effects.
This paper presents a method for assessing the dynamic responses of gravity-based structures (GBS) under various seismic loads, with a focus on fluid-structure-ground interactions. Models of GBSs and their surrounding environments were developed, incorporating interaction effects among the structure, seawater, and seabed. Dynamic responses of the GBS subjected to three seismic loads-Chi-Chi, Northridge01, and Northridge02-were calculated, with consideration of both horizontal and vertical accelerations, as well as displacements. Parametric studies indicated that the primary factors affecting the dynamic responses of GBS were seismic loads characterized by significant input forces and accelerations. The frictional force on the ground had minimal impact on the horizontal and vertical displacements of the GBS. Weight emerged as a critical factor in anchoring the GBS to the ground and minimizing vertical accelerations and displacements.

The equivalent frame method (EFM) is widely used for the design of two-way reinforced concrete slab structures, and current design codes of practice permit the application of the EFM in analyzing the flat plate slab structures under gravity and lateral loads. The EFM was, however, originally developed for the flat plate structures subjected to gravity load, which is not suitable for lateral loading case. Therefore, this study, the first part of series research paper, proposed the structural analysis method for the flat plate slab structures under the combined gravity and lateral loads, which is named as the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM). In the proposed method, some portion of rotation induced in the torsional member is distributed to the flexibility of the equivalent columns, and the remaining portion is contributed to that of the equivalent slabs. In the consecutive companion paper, the proposed UEFM is verified by comparing with test results of multi-span flat plate structures. Also, a simplified nonlinear push-over analysis method is proposed, and verified by comparing to test results.

The current design codes present an equivalent frame method (EFM) for the analysis and design of two-way slab structures. However, since the EFM was developed to be suitable for two-way slab structures subjected to gravity loads only, it brings many problems in its application to the analysis of two-way slabs to which gravity and lateral loads are applied simultaneously. Therefore, authors proposed the unified equivalent frame method (UEFM) that can analyze the structural behavior of flat-plate slab systems subjected to gravity and lateral loads in their previous studies. In this study, the UEFM was modified to be applicable to the two-way slab system with beams. In addition, the accuracy of the proposed UEFM was then examined by comparing it to the lateral behaviors of the two-way slab specimens.
A reliability analysis of the gravity-based foundation of anoffshore wind turbine was performed by considering the uncertainties of the design variables, including environmental loads. The limit state functions of the gravity-based foundation were defined using the response limits of the support structures suggested in the DNV standard. The wind load couldbe obtained using the GH_bladed software, and the wave load was calculated using the Morison equation. Then, the extreme distributions of the wind and wave loads were estimated by applying the peak over threshold (POT) method to the wind and wave load data. The probability distribution characteristics of the soil properties were defined with reference to a southwest coast geotechnical survey report. The reliability index was evaluated for each failure mode using a first-order reliability method.

To study the seismic resistance of the shear capacity of the RC beam-column joints of two-story and four-story RC buildings, sample buildings are designed with ordinary moment resisting frame. For the shear capacity of joints, the equations of FEMA 356 and NZ seismic assessment are selected and compared. For comparison, one group of buildings is designed only for gravity loads and the other group is designed for seismic and gravity loads. For 16 cases of the designed buildings, seismic performance point is evaluated through push-over analysis and the capacity of joint shear strength is checked. Not only for the gravity designed buildings but also for seismic designed buildings, the demand of joint shear is exceeding the capacity at exterior joints. However, for interior joint, the demand of joint shear exceeds the capacity only for one case. At exterior joints, the axial load stress ratio is lower than 0.21 for gravity designed buildings and 0.13 for seismic designed buildings.
