Adquate friction resistance is needed to prevent pavement slipperiness and to allow vehicles to stop in a reasonable distance. Performance of the aggregates is reduced over time by wear and polishing as a consequence of vehicular traffic. In this research, the objective was to develop a laboratory method to test Indiana gravel aggregates to predict field performance, and determine causes for the range of values amang gravel aggregates. The assessment of gravel sources was primarily on the basis of individual rock types and those proportions comprising the gravel. Polish and friction values were determined in the laboratory with the British Wheel and Pendulum. The gravels of this study were composed primarily of carbonate aggregates that showed considerable variability in polishing thresholds. Igneous and metamorphic constituents polished to a lesser degree and are expected to improve overall aggregate performance. Estimates of the IFV (Initial Friction Value) and PV (Polished Value) for crushed gravel samples can be made based on the percentage of rock types present in the sample. A weighted average is used to make this calculation.
Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) is a zero slump concrete consisting of a mixture of cementitious materials, sand, dense graded aggregates and water. In this study, an attempt has been made to investigate the effect of aggregate type on strength and abrasion resistance of RCC made by using granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) as partial replacement of cement. Mix proportions of RCC were finalized based upon the optimum water content achieved in compaction test. Two different series of RCC mixes were prepared with two different aggregates: crushed gravel and limestone aggregates. In both series, cement was partially replaced with GGBS at a replacement level of 20%, 40% and 60%. Strength Properties and abrasion resistance of the resultant mixes was investigated. Abrasion resistance becomes an essential parameter for understanding the acceptability of RCC for rigid pavements. Experimental results show that limestone aggregates, with optimum percentage of GGBS, perform better in compressive strength and abrasion resistance as compared to the use of crushed gravel aggregates. Observed results are further supported by stoichiometric analysis of the mixes by using basic stoichiometric equations for hydration of major cement compounds.
For the preliminary judgement on the chemical stability of concrete aggregates mixed with cement paste, ASTM C 295 method can be applied prior to the long-term chemical test methods. By using this standard test method, the petrographic study on the appropriateness of natural KEDO aggregates for concrete was carried out. With the natural gravel and sand aggregates, the polarized microscope, stereoscopic microscope, and X-ray diffractometer were used for examination. The result shows the 23% of gravel aggregates and 5.1% of sand aggregates are chemically unstable. To select the favorable KEDO concrete aggregates, it is required to exclude the highly metamorphosed rocks, acidic volcanic rocks, highly foliated rocks, and expansive rocks identified from mortar-bar test. Further chemical test and mortar-bar test method integrated with this study is recommended for the suitability assessment of natural KEDO concrete aggregates.
A laboratory investigation was conducted wherein smooth, rounded, siliceous river gravel aggregates were coated with fine-grained polyethylene, carpet co-product, or cement + styrene butadiene rubber latex and used to prepare hot mix asphalt concrete specimens. Only the coarse (+ No.4) aggregates were coated. The concept was that the coatings would enhance surface roughness of the aggregates and, thus, produce asphalt mixtures with superior engineering properties. Hot mix asphalt specimens were prepared and evaluated using several standard and non-standard test procedures. Based on experiences during the coating processes and analyses of these limited test results, the following was concluded: All three aggregate coating materials increased Hveem and Marshall stability, tensile strength, and resilient modulus(stiffness). These findings are indicative of improved resistance to rutting and cracking in hot mix asphalt pavements prepared using coated gravel aggregates in comparison to similar uncoated gravel aggregates.

A survey of concrete plants in Incheon Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi Province was used to conduct an analysis of aggregate transport distance and production forms, as well as to evaluate the features and current status of aggregates distribution. As a result, areas such as Incheon, Siheung, Bucheon, Gimpo, and Siheung, where the distance to the demand points is less than 20 km, exhibited bidirectional distribution whereas Paju, Yongin, Yangju, and Pocheon, with distances ranging from 20 to 50 km is showed a unidirectional distribution pattern supplying aggregates exclusively to Incheon. Survey on manufacturing forms, more than 85% of the gravel dispersed in the Incheon area is made up of crushed aggregates derived from rocks discharged at construction sites indicating a considerable skew in supply chain. These findings are predicted to have a detrimental influence on aggregate supply in the long run, necessitating policy changes targeted at building an optimal aggregate distribution market.

Temperature is one of the important factors affecting the permeability of water in the soil. In the present study, the impact of water temperature on hydraulic conductivity (k) with and without coarse aggregations by considering six types of soils was analyzed. Moreover, the effect of sand and gravel presence in the soil was investigated through the infiltration based on constant and inconstant water head experiments. Results indicated that by increasing the water temperature, adding gravel to sandy soil caused the hydraulic conductivity to raise. It is supposed that the gravel decreased the contact surface between the water and the soil aggregates. It is deduced that due to decreasing kinetic energy, k tends to have lower values. Furthermore, adding the sand to sandy silt-clay soil showed that the sand did not have a marginal effect on the variation of k since the added sand cannot increase the contact surface like gravel. Finally, increasing the main diameter of the soil will increase the effect of the water temperature on hydraulic conductivity.
In this paper, the workability and static stability were evaluated using a proposed test method. Workability and static stability represent a key property of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in fresh state. A number of standardized test methods were developed to assess these properties. However, no accelerated test method reliably predicts both workability and static stability of SCC. In the present work, a modified K-slump test method was developed to evaluate workability and static stability of SCC. In order to take implicit mixture variations of SCC constituents that can affect fresh SCC properties, a central composite design was adopted to highlight the effect of gravel to sand ratio (G/S), gravel 3/8 to gravel 8/15 ratio (G1/G2), water to cement ratio (W/C), marble powder to cement ratio (MP/C) and superplasticizer content (SP) on workability measured with slump and flow time (T50) tests and static stability measured with sieve stability test (Pi), segregation test index (SSI), Penetration test (Pd) and the proposed K-slump test (Km). The obtained results show that G/S ratio close to 1 and G1/G2 ratio close to 60% can be considered as optimal values to achieve a good workability while ensuring a sufficient static stability of SCC. Acceptable relationships were obtained between Slump flow, Pi, Pd and Km. Results show that the proposed K-slump test allow to assess both workability and static stability of fresh SCC mixtures.
Annually, Taiwan generates approximately 2 million tons of inorganic wastes in the form of sludge, fly ash and slug. To increase the added value of waste and maintain the increasingly insufficient supply of natural gravel, large public construction projects account for this large demand each year. future architectural trends are leading towards high-rise buildings. In light of the above, Center for Environmental, Safety and Health Technology Development, Industrial Technology Research Institute has developed the technology of manufacturing cold-bonding, sintering and bloating types of lightweight aggregates with a specific gravity ranging between 0.7~1.7, water absorption rate < 30%. The lightweight aggregate verified by physical property tests can be used as a substitute for the natural aggregate, which generally appears in replacing gravel in concrete, soundproofing and heat insulation materials. Doing so would not only moderate waste disposal problems, but also achieve the goal of resource recovery.
On the base of the aggregate extraction statistics, this study tried to analyse the demand and supply of aggregate resources of each local government and provide directions for the stable and sustainable supply and demand of aggregate resources in the future. In 2019, aggregates were produced in 148 cities, about 65% of the 229 cities of Korea, but in 7 metropolitan cities with 74 local governments, only 19 cities developed the aggregate. It means that aggregate extraction is taking place in almost all regions in Korea. Sand and gravel were produced in 110 districts and 132 districts, respectively. By aggregate source, river aggregates were extracted in 4 local governments, land aggregates in 42 local governments, forest aggregates in 75 local governments, crushed aggregates in 105 local governments, and washing aggregates in 15 local governments. In other words, 81 district in Korea have not extracted land-based aggregate at all. 71 local governments produced only one type of aggregate, and 55 local governments developed two types of aggregate, and 22 local governments developed more that three types of aggregate. In 2019, the leading producing local government were, in descending order of volume, Ulju-gun, followed by Hwaseong-si, Cheongju-si, Pocheon-si, Paju-si, Yongin-si, Gimhae-si, Gwangju-si in Gyeonggi-do. 41 local governments have developed aggregates of more than 1 million m3, and the combined production of the 41 cities accounted for about 70% of national total. This shows that the aggregate extraction trend of local governments is becoming larger and more concentrated.

Recently, the broken concrete lumps resulting from the demolition of concrete structures are creshed for reuse as aggregates(i.e. recycled fine and gravel). And also, in the processing of crusing, the recycled powder of an equivalent of between 20% to 30% by wt.% of the broken concrete lumps is generated. The extensive research of recycled concrete aggregates has been carried out in various parts of the world. But less reseatch on the reuse of recycled concrete powder has been carried out. It is the purpose of this report that the study on the quality evaluation of recycled aggregates for recycled concrete. In specially, this report deals with the properties such as flow, compressive strength, bending strength, drying shrinkage and wight loss rate of mortars replaced standard fine aggregate with recycled powders at the rate of 3, 7, 15, 20 and 30 wt.%. Since the characteristics of recycled mortars with the recycled powders were comparable to those of the normal mortar without the recycled powders as described above, its concretes could be found extensive application in such field as concrete products.
