Recently Manipulation capability is important for a robot. Interaction between a robot hand and objects can be properly controlled only is suitable sensors are available. Recently the tendency is to create robot hands more compact and high integrated sensors system, in order to increase the grasping capability and in order to reduce cabling through the finger, the palm and the arm. As a matter of fact, miniaturization and cabling harness represents a significant limitation to the design of small sized embedded sensor. Ongoing work is focusing on a flexible manipulation system, which consists of a dual flexible multi-fingered hand-arm system, and a dual active vision system.
Stroke patients, etc. can't use their hands because of the paralysis of their fingers, and their fingers could be recovered by rehabilitating training. In order to judge the rehabilitating extent of their fingers, the patients should grasp a cylindrical object in hospital. At present, the used object in hospital is only a cylindrical object, and can't measure the force of fingers. Therefore, doctors judge the rehabilitating extent by touching and watching at their fingers. So, the four-finger force measuring system which can measure the force of their fingers should be developed. In this paper, four-finger force measuring system with four force sensors which can measure the grasping force is developed. The force sensors are designed and fabricated, and the force measuring device is designed and manufactured by using DSP(digital signal processing). Also, the grasping force test of men is performed by using the developed four-finger force measuring system. It was confirmed that the finger average force of right hand is about 214.6 N and that of left hand is about 212.8 N.
A composite bionic soft gripper integrated with electromagnets and magneto-active elastomers is designed by combining the structure of the human hand and the snake's behavior of enhancing friction by actively adjusting the scales. A silicon-based polymer containing magnetized hard magnetic particles is proposed as a soft finger, and it can be reversibly bent by adjusting the magnetic field. Experiments show that the length, width, and height of rectangular soft fingers and the volume ratio of neodymium-iron-boron have different effects on bending angle. The flexible fingers with 20 vol% are the most efficient, which can bend to 90° when the magnetic field is 22 mT. The flexible gripper with four fingers can pick up 10.51 g of objects at the magnetic field of 105 mT. In addition, this composite bionic soft gripper has excellent magnetron performance, and it can change surface like snakes and operate like human hands. This research may help develop soft devices for magnetic field control and try to provide new solutions for soft grasping.
It is essential to obtain a distane informaion in order to completely execute assembly tasks such as a grasping and an insertion. In this paper, we propose a method estimating a measurement distance from a sensor to an object through using the omni-directional image sensing system for assembly(OISSA) and show its features and feasibility by a computer simulation. The method, utilizing a forwarded motion stereo technique, is simple to search the corresponding points and possible to immediatiely obtain a three-dimensional 2.pi.-shape information.

An articulated, multifinger mechanical hand can carry out grasping and manipulation operations on objects of different type and shape. In this paper the architecture of the mechanical hand is presented. Joints are driven by two antagonist tendons. Strain gauges are used to derive tendon tensions, and located in the palm of the hand. Angular defection of the joints is measured by Hall effect sensors attached to the joints. A multiprocessor-based architecture for controlling the hand is illustrated.
Most of industrial robots are reprogrammable for various operations. while the gripper is only used for on - off grasping. If the gripper has the intelligent ability to interact with its environment, it will be very useful in many fine motion application. For this pur pose, an electric gripper system is, developed through experiments and simulation. This paper describes a method of the contact position between the gripper and the grasped object by using strain gauge sensors, and presents the related experimental results.
When grasping a movable object or making an object move, humans feel kinesthetic sense. Kinesthetic sense is the human sense that the human feels in response to the motion acted on the human. The objecive of the paper is tranforming the kinesthetic sense to quantitized data that is useful from the viewpoint of engineering. To provide various motion patterns, 2-dimensional motion generator was built using 2-axis linear motors. Active stiffness and active damping were implemented by means of current control and force feedback techniques. Based on Taguchi method, the most dominant factors to affect kinesthetic sense were investigated. Also, some functions adequate to quantize the kinesthetic sense were found.

This keynote presentation covers the subject of intelligent systems development for monitoring and control in various NASA space applications. Similar intelligent systems technology also has applications in terrestrial commercial applications. Discussion will be given of the general approach of intelligent systems and description given of intelligent systems under prototype development for possible use in Space Shuttle Upgrade, in the Experimental Crew Return. Vehicle, and in free-flying space robotic cameras to provide autonomy to these spacecraft with flexible human intervention, if desired or needed. Development of intelligent system monitoring and control for regenerative life support subsystems such as NASA's human rated Bio-PLEX test facility is also described. A video showing two recent world's firsts in real-time vision-guided robotic arm and hand grasping of tumbling and translating complex shaped objects in micro-gravity will also be shown.
This purpose of this study was to design the effect of recovering of a hand amputees by myoelectronic hand. It was designed with 2 degree of freedom in tile laboratory. Myoelectronic hand had only one degree of freedom and one movement until now. Also this myoelectronic hand had multi-joint system. Myoelectronic hand data was obtained by measuring hand and data was applied when it was designed myoelectronic hand. PID controll of myoelectronic hand was used to it. Displacement control was applied the first link of finger. Experiment was accomlkished in Tip grasp, power grasp and Hook grasp modes. Displacement controll was good in low frequency. Velocity control was applied to each mode. This myoelectronic hand with a hand amputees could do some jobs such as grasping materials. Further studies were needed to evaluate the effect of a myoelectronic hand with more precise laboratory equipment.
In this paper presents a control algorism for myoelectric hand prosthesis(MHP) with 2 degree of freedom(DOF), which consists of a mechanical hand, a surface myoelectric sensor(SMES) for measuring myoelectric signal, a control system and a charging battery. The actuation for the 2-DOF hand functions such as grasping and wrist rotation was performed by two DC-motors, and controlled by myoelectric signal measured from the residual forearm muscle. The two controllers were made of a RISC-type microprocessor, and its software was executed on a real-time kernel. The experimental results were showed that the proposed a control algorism is feasible for the MHP.
