Generally, field emitters can be categorized into two types according to the emitter shape, one is a planar field emitter and the other is a point emitter. The planar field emitter is used for displays, flat lamps and signage boards. On the other hands, the point field emitter is expected to play a significant role in x-ray sources and electron beam sources. Such applications of the point field emitters, especially, need large emission current and high emission stability with a small electron beam size. A few reports announced point emitters made by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). However, they still have suffered from poor reproducibility and low emission current. Here, we demonstrated high performance CNT point emitters by attaching CNTs onto graphite rod. Graphite rod exhibited good electrical conductivity and chemical stability. In this method, the shape of the point emitter could be easily controlled by changing the length and diameter of the graphite rod. The CNT point emitter showed emission current over 1 mA at an applied electric field of 1.4 V/${\mu}m$. We consider that the stable emission performance is attributed to the stable contact between CNTs and graphite rod.
Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) illustrated great potential for powering environmental sensors and bioremediation of sediments. In the present study, array anodes for SMFCs were fabricated with graphite rods as anode material and stainless steel plate as electric current collector to make it inconvenient to in situ settle down and not feasible for large-scale application. The results demonstrated that maximum power of 89.4 ㎼ was obtained from three graphite rods, twice of 43.3 ㎼ for two graphite rods. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that three graphite rods resulted in anodic resistance of 61.2 Ω, relative to 76.0 Ω of two graphite rods. It was probably caused by the parallel connection of the graphite rods, as well as more biomass which could reduce the charge transfer resistance of the biofilm anode. The presently designed array configuration possesses the advantages of easy to enlarge the surface area, decrease in anodic resistance because of the parallel connection of each graphite rod, and convenience to berry into sediment by gravity. Therefore, the as prepared array node would be an effective method to fabricate large-scale SMFC and make it easy to in situ applicate in natural sediments.
The operating temperature of VHTR components is much higher than that of conventional PWR due to high core outlet temperature of VHTR. Material requirements and technical issues of VHTR reactor components which are mainly dominated by high temperature service condition were discussed. The codification effort for high temperature material and design methodology are explained. The design class for VHTR components are classified as class A or B according to the recent ASME high temperature reactor design code. A separation of thermal boundary and pressure boundary is used for VHTR components as an elevated design solution. Key design characteristics for reactor pressure vessel, control rod, reactor internals, graphite reflector, circulator and intermediate heat exchanger were analysed. Thermo-mechanical analysis of the process heat exchanger, which was manufactured for test, is presented as an analysis example.
Many novel materials exhibit a property of different elastic moduli in tension and compression. One such material is graphene, a wonder material, which has the highest strength yet measured. Investigations on buckling problems for structures with different moduli are scarce. To address this new problem, firstly, the nondimensional expression of the relation between offset of neutral axis and deflection curve is derived based on the phased integration method, and then using the energy method, load-deflection relation of the rod is determined; Secondly, based on the improved constitutive model for different moduli, large deformation finite element formulations are developed and combined with the arc-length method, finite element iterative program for rods with different moduli is established to obtain buckling critical loads; Thirdly, material mechanical properties tests of graphite, which is the raw material of graphene, are performed to measure the tensile and compressive elastic moduli, moreover, buckling tests are also conducted to investigate the buckling behavior of this kind of graphite rod. By comparing the calculation results of the energy method and finite element method with those of laboratory tests, the analytical model and finite element numerical model are demonstrated to be accurate and reliable. The results show that it may lead to unsafe results if the classic theory was still adopted to determine the buckling loads of those rods composed of a material having different moduli. The proposed models could provide a novel approach for further investigation of non-linear mechanical behavior for other structures with different moduli.

This study explores the potential for tritium production in North Korea's 5MWe graphite-moderated reactor, a facility primarily associated with nuclear weapons material production. While existing research on these reactors has largely centered on plutonium, our focus shifts to tritium, a crucial element in boosted fission bombs. Utilizing the MCNP6 code for simulations, the results estimate that North Korea can possibly produce approximately 7-12 g of tritium annually. This translates to the potential production of 1-3 boosted fission bombs each year. By incorporating tritium production into assessments of North Korea's nuclear capabilities, our methodology provides insights into the dynamics of the country's nuclear force, revealing a more diversified and complex composition than previously assumed. The findings significantly aid policymakers, regulatory bodies, and researchers in comprehending potential proliferation risks associated with graphite-moderated reactors and in developing strategies to address the nuclear threat emanating from North Korea.
Graphite for the nuclear reactor is used to the moderator, reflector and supporter in which fuel rod inside of nuclear reactor. Recently, there are many researches has been performed on the various characteristics of nuclear graphite, however most of them are restricted to the structural and the mechanical properties. Therefore we focused on the thermal property of nuclear graphite. This study investigated the thermal emissivity following the oxidation degree of nuclear graphite with IG-11 used as a sample. IG-11 was oxidized to 6% and 11% in air at 5 l/min at $600^{\circ}C$. The porosity and thermal emissivity of the sample were measured using a mercury porosimeter and by an IR method, respectively. The thermal emissivity of an oxidized sample was measured at $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. The porosity of the oxidized samples was found to increase as the oxidation degree increased. The thermal emissivity increased as the oxidation degree increased, and the thermal emissivity decreased as the measured temperature increased. It was confirmed that the thermal emissivity of oxidized IG-11 is correlated with the porosity of the sample.
The study on a surface transformation hardening of a rod-shaped SM45C carbon steel is carried out by using CW Nd:YAG laser. Conventionally, $CO_2$ laser has been usually used as a laser source for a transformation hardening. however, it is needed to an additional absorbent coating like a colloidal graphite owing to a lower absorbtion rate. On the other hand, no cost and post-removal process of coating is required to Nd:YAG laser, due to a higher absorbtion rate relatively. Moreover, there is a merit which is capable of building up the more flexible processing system resulted from a beam delivery through a optical fiber. In this study, we were going to recognize characteristics of a transformation hardening using a optic head with a gaussian beam distribution.

The Korean Nuclear-Hydrogen Technology Development (NHTD) Plan will be performing irradiation testing of coated particle fuel at HANARO to support the development of VHTR in Korea. This testing will be carried out to demonstrate and qualify TRISO-coated particle fuel for use in VHTR. The testing will be irradiated in an inert gas atmosphere without on-line temperature monitoring and control combined with on-line fission product monitoring of the sweep gas. The irradiation device contains two test rods, one has nine fuel compacts and the other five compacts and eight graphite specimens. Each compact contains about 260 TRISO-coated particles. The irradiation device is being loaded and irradiated into the OR5 hole of the in HANARO core from August 2013. The device will be operated for about 150 effective full-power days at a peak temperature of about $1030^{\circ}C$ in BOC (Beginning of Cycle) during irradiation testing. After a peak burn-up of about 4 atomic percentage and a peak fast neutron fluence of about $1.7{\times}10^{21}\;n/cm^2$, PIE (Post-Irradiation Examination) of the irradiated coated particle fuel will be performed at IMEF (Irradiated Material Examination Facility). This paper reviews the design of test rod and irradiation device for coated particle fuel, and discusses the technical results for irradiation testing at HANARO.
