  • Graphite and MoS2 were added respectively as a lubricant to improve the cutting efficiency of micro blades which contains diamond abrasive. Strength, fracture toughness, and life span of micro-blades were observed to decrease with the increase in diamond abrasive and lubricant content. Wearing mode of micro-blades and the cutting efficiency were also found to be affected by the content of diamond abrasive and the addition of lubricants.

  • Friction characteristics and electrical resistance of sliding contacts in slipring-brush assembly were investigated. Four brush materials containing relative amounts of copper and graphite were studied. The result showed that a copper-graphite brush at a particular graphite content exhibited the most stable frictional and electrical behaviour suggesting an optimum amount of solid lubricant in metal-graphite brush system. Microscopic observation and the surface analysis showed good agreement with this phenomena.

  • The effect of graphite on the frictional characteristics of Cu-based sintered friction materials was studied by pin-on-disk type wear test. A study has been carried out concerning the optimum concentration of graphite in sintered friction material to obtain the minimum wear rate and low friction coefficient . Friction coefficient and wear rate were increased as increasing the content of graphite in the matrix. In the study the optimum concentration of graphite was 19vol % to get the minimum wear rate and optimal frick'ion coefficient.

  • Lubricant-based nanofluids were prepared by dispersing carbon nanoparticles in gear oil. In this study, the effects of the particle size, shape and dispersity of the particles on the tribological properties of nanofluids were investigated. Dispersion experiments were conducted with a high-speed bead mill and an ultrasonic homogenizer, and the surfaces of the nanoparticles were simultaneously modified with several dispersants. The effective thermal conductivity of the nanofluids was measured by the transient hot-wire method, and the tribological behaviors of the nanofluids were also investigated with a disk-on-disk tribo-tester. The results of this study clearly showed that the combination of the nanoparticles, the deagglomeration process, the dispersant and the dispersion solvent is very important for the dispersity and tribological properties of nanofluids. Lubricant-based nanofluids showed relatively low thermal conductivity enhancement, but they were highly effective in decreasing the frictional heat that was generated. For nanofluids containing 0.1vol.% graphite particles in an oil lubricant, The friction coefficient in the boundary and fluid lubrication range was reduced to approximately 70% of the original value of pure lubricant.

  • The effects of solid lubricants on wear and friction characteristics of friction materials were studied using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Friction materials with ten formulations containing different relative amounts of solid lubricants(graphite, MoS$_2$and Sb$_2$S$_3$) were investigated. Results of this work showed that each formulation with different relative amounts of the lubricants had unique friction characteristics. At low brake temperatures, friction materials containing rich graphite showed a small amount of $\mu$ change during sliding. At elevated temperatures, on the other hand, friction materials with rich Sb$_2$S$_3$and graphite showed smaller $\mu$ changes suggesting complementary lubrication of Sb$_2$S$_3$and graphite during sliding. However, the friction materials with rich Sb$_2$S$_3$showed a large amount of wear.

  • Tribological properties of the semi-metallic friction materials containing different solid lubricants (graphite, $WS_2$, $MoS_2$) were investigated. The friction materials were fabricated with an experimental formulation and tested with gray cast iron disks. Results showed that graphite contributed to stabilize the friction coefficient during run-in processes. Also, graphite provided better fade resistance than that of $WS_2$ and $MoS_2$. At intermediate temperature ranges, however, friction materials with $WS_2$ or $MoS_2$ maintained higher friction effectiveness than that of graphite. On the other hand, friction materials containing $MoS_2$ showed increased wear rates than that with graphite or $WS_2$. Friction materials with proper combinations of two solid lubricants showed better friction and wear properties than that of the friction materials containing single solid lubricant.

  • This study explains the effects of lubricant and surface treatment on hot forging die life. The mechanical and thermal load, and thermal softening which is happened by the high temperature of die, in hot and warm forging, cause die wear, heat checking and plastic deformation, etc. This study is fur the effects of solid lubricants and surface treatment condition for hot forging die. Because cooling effect and low friction are essential to the long life of dies, optimal surface treatment and lubricant are very important to improve die life for hot forging process. The main factors, which affect die hardness and heat transfer, are surface treatments and lubricants, which are related to thermal diffusion coefficient and heat transfer coefficient, etc. For verifying these effects, experiments are performed for hot ring compression test and heat transfer coefficient in various conditions as like different initial billet temperatures and different loads. The effects of lubricant and surface treatment for hot forging die life are explained by their thermal characteristics. The new developed technique in this study for predicting tool life can give more feasible means to improve the tool life in hot forging process.

  • Lubrication and cooling characteristics are the most important factors of elevated temperature forging lubricants. Usually adopted lubricants in warm forging processes are graphite, synthetic and emulsion lubricants. Most widely and effectively applied lubricants are graphite lubricants, but these have a lot of problems like tool corrosion and dusty environment. In this research, boronite lubricant is considered, because it is able to substitute for graphite. Hot ring compression test, cooling test and mass production test are performed to check the validity of new lubrication pigment.

  • A large number of additives have been used with the efforts of improving the performance of lubricants used along with the development of internal combustion engine. In this study, nano-sized graphite was used as liquid-lubricant additive. In order to disperse graphite into oil, we esterified the nano-carbon manufactured by our company with various types of alcohol. After measuring the anti-wear in accordance with the types of alcohol and added concentration, it has been found that its anti-wear/friction decrease has been improved in case of adding 0.1% of the sample composed with C12/14 mixed alcohol & hexadecanol.
