  • Without scientific understanding of the phase change and the rejuvenation in woody perennials, many tree breeders have successfully rejuvenated and multiplied mature trees of some tree species, i.e., Eucalyptus, Pseudotsuga menziesii Sequoia sempervirens, Pinus radiata, Pinus pinaster, Quercus virginiana, Hedera helix, Juglans, apples, grapes, and so on. Practical techniques discussed to rejuvenate the old trees include grafting to younger stock, growth regulator treatment, pruning, repeated cutting, and in vitro culture. However, a combination of skills mentioned is recommended for rejuvenation of the mature propagation material. It is strongly required to develop a morphological and/or biochemical indicator system to judge the juvenility.

  • Resveratrol (trans-3, 4', 5-trihydroxystilbene), which is a polyphenolic compound found in a variety of plants such as grapes and wine, has been reported to have a variety of anti-inflammatory, anti-platelet, and anti-carcinogenic effects. Recently resveratrol was reported to serve as an estrogen agonist in MCF-7 cells Based on its structural similarity to diethylstilbestrol, a synthetic estrogen, we examined whether resveratrol and its derivatives might be estrogenic using stable MCF-7-ERE cells. • Resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene), a phytoalexin found in grapes and wines is a potent antioxidant with cancer-preventive properties, the mechanism by which resveratrol imparts cancer chemopreventive effect is poorly defined. The aim of the present study was to further elucidate the possible mechanisms by which resveratrol exerts its anti-proliferative action in cultured human lung cancer cells.(omitted)

  • This study aimed to analyze the effect of demographic characteristics of consumers and quality recognition factors on purchase intention of organic wine, and to provide preliminary data necessary for the development of wine industry. By factor analysis of collected surveys, quality recognition factors of both the experienced and non-experienced group of organic wine environment/health, varieties of grapes, price, and four brand elements. First, among demographic characteristics, only income level hae a significant influence on the changes in quality recognition causes. Each of quality recognition causes of organic wine had a significant relation with purchase intent. The result of our analysis suggested that 'environment/health' was most influential for the experienced group, and 'health' was most influential for the non-experienced group. Therefore, this hypothesis is supported.

  • This study was conducted by the Dept. of Preventive Medicine, Kyung Hee University, School of Medicine as a preliminary test for the effects of Fluorine Compounds to the Plants from April through August, 1971. Fluorine was measured with Zirconium-Alizarine method and the following findings could be obtained: 1. Most high densities (25.7 pptm) was found around the industrial areas and lowest (19.3 pptm) around residential sections in Seoul. 2. Average density of Fluorine in the atmosphere of Seoul City was 22.3 pptm which can damage such plants as Pine, Strawberry, Peach and Grapes. 3. Fluorine contents (22.3 pptin) in Seoul area atmosphere shows about 4 times more than that of Cincinnati, Ohio, U. S. A.

  • This study was performed to isolated woild killer yeasts which might suppress the growth of contaminant yeasts during wine making. Seventeen strains of killer yeasts which were isolated from grapes in Korea showed different killing activity; higher with K109 and K112. and lower with K117 strain. There was no inhibition among the isolates by cross-reaction. Through the physiological, morphological and cultural test, the isolates were identified as a new killer yeast, Cadida dattila, and then named Candida dattila K101-K117.

  • The aim of using grape-bagging paper is preventing damages by light and harmful insects during grape growth. The number of using grape-bagging paper has been increasing because advantages of using it have been confirmed. A technology to produce it has not been fully developed yet. In this study properties of the grape-bagging paper were analyzed. Results showed that air-permeability and transmitted light of grape-bagging paper were important. It was tried to see the influence of paper structure on air-permeability, transmitted light and the grapes saccharinity. For making different structure of grape-bagging paper, papers were produced with different freeness levels at several pressure conditions. Coloration time of Campbell grape with new bagging paper started about 5 days earlier than that with usual bagging paper, It was also possible to improve the saccharinity about 0.1-N0.8 Brix. Because new bagging paper has a low apparent density, it affected the saccharinity and coloration time of grape.

  • The Shine Muscat is a table grape, popular in South Korea for its unique mango-flavor taste. Flyspeck is a disease that is characterized by small, black, and circular specks on the grape cuticle was first observed in several commercial orchards in Sangju, South Korea, in August 2019. Here we identified the causal agent of flyspeck based on an advanced diagnosis approach, comprised of both morphological and molecular analyses. Morphological characteristics of the cultures isolated from grape flyspeck were identical to the fungus Cladosporium perangustum. The concatenated sequences of ITS, ACT, and EF1-α were used for molecular phylogenetic analysis, BLAST searches along with Bayesian inference-based phylogeny, confirmed that the causal agent of grape flyspeck is C. perangustum. The cultured fungal isolates also produced flyspeck symptoms on healthy fruits in pathogenicity tests. To the best of my knowledge, this is the first documented evidence of any Cladosporium sp. producing flyspeck symptoms on any plant.
