Contribution of Soil Pysico-chemical Properties to Fruit Quality of 'Campbell Early' Grapes in the Vineyards (포도 '캠벨얼리' 품질에 미치는 토양이화학성의 상대적 기여도)

  • 'Campbell Early', a major grape cultivar, occupies more than 70% of cultivated vineyard areas, however, recommendable standard management system of soil environmental conditions has not been developed yet in Korea. The consideration for the correlation between fruit quality and soil condition in the vineyard is required in the efficient management system of soil. This study was carried out to investigate the optimum soil environmental conditions for 'Campbell Early' grape production with high quality. The results from analyses of correlation between them were used to develop soil management guideline for promoting efficiency in grape production. Soil properties were analyzed from 120 vineyards in Hawsung, Sangju, Yeongdong, Gimcheon, Yeongju, and Yeongwol, major grape production regions. Because there is neither coloring disorder nor delayed coloration in grape production of 'Campbell Early', relative contribution of soil hardness and solid phase to fruit quality and fruit weight was analyzed. Among the soil properties, while cation and soil hardness affected sugar content at the level of 39.3% and 36.8%, respectively, saturated hydraulic conductivity, solid phase, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) showed relatively low contribution to sugar content in the vineyard. The sugar content in grapes was influenced more critically by the chemical properties than the physical ones in the soil of vineyards. While soil hardness and solid phase affected grape weight at the level of 27.8% and 26.0%, respectively, phosphate content, organic matter content, and cation showed low contribution to grape weight. Grape guality such as sugar content and grape weight was affected highly by cation and organic matters. Therefore, cation and organic matter content of soil contributed to fruit quality at the level of 33.8% and 15.5%, respectively, in the vineyard.

Colonization Characteristics and Density of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi(AMF) in the Different Cultivated Grape Soils (재배방식이 상이한 포도 재배지 토양의 Arbuscular균근균 포자밀도와 감염특성)

  • There was no difference between eco-friendly and conventional cultivated soils in the chemical properties. But $Av.P_2O_5$ contents in the eco-friendly cultivated soils were slightly higher than that of conventional cultivated soils. In the conventional cultivated soils, the coefficient of correlation between spore density and soil chemical properties such as pH, EC, OM, $Av.P_2O_5$, K${\surd}$(Ca+Mg) and CEC was $-0.48^*$, -0.05, $0.48^*$, -0.12, -0.13, 0.31 respectively. But, in the eco-friendly cultivated soils was $-0.68^*$, $0.69^*$, $0.96^{**}$, $0.75^*$, $0.63^*$, $0.92^{**}$ respectively. The spore density was 140 spores $30g^{-1}$ in the eco-friendly cultivated soils and 60 spores $30g^{-1}$ in the conventional cultivated soils. Infection ratio of intercellular hypha was higher than that of arbuscular and vesicular among the fungi structures within the root. Suncheon and Cheonan as eco-friendly cultivated soil were higher than GimJe and NamWon in infection ratio.

The maximum limiting characteristic method-based land suitability assessment for peaches (Prunus persica) and grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) using rasterized data of soil and climate on agricultural land in South Korea (토양 및 기후정보 통합 최대저해인자법에 의한 복숭아와 포도의 적지 평가)

  • Land suitability assessments have been a crucial issue for enhancing productivity in agriculture and conserving agricultural lands. Based on soil and climate information, land suitability assessment for peaches (Prunus persica) and grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) were conducted using the maximum limiting characteristic method (MLCM) in South Korea. In peaches, S1 (highly suitable) exists on 2.21% of the land, S2 (moderately suitable) on 19.20%, N1 (currently not suitable) on 12.07%, and N2 (permanently not suitable) on the remaining 66.52%. In grapes, 3.65% of the land is classified as S1, 17.98% as S2, 11.85% as N1 and 66.52% as N2. In both fruit trees, the results acquired from soil and climatic information were similar to those from soil information alone. The data also suggest that the grades by soil information were relatively low over the land. With the assumption that the more suitable area a province has, the more will be cultivated for the fruit trees, we compared the percentages of area for peach and grape farming per province with the results by MLCM, and suggested that some provinces with a small percentage of farm can be encouraged to plant more in suitable areas as dictated by MLCM for the species. In the near future, we plan to use an advanced method such as analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to conduct similar tests, in which having reference data of yields or benefits per farm can efficiently increase the accuracy of the measurements.

Response of Microbial Distribution to Soil Properties of Orchard Fields in Jeonbuk Area (전북지역 과수원의 토양특성이 미생물 분포에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate impacts of soil properties on microbial distribution in Jeonbuk orchard fields. Soil samples were collected from 110 sites cultivated with different fruit plants. The population of aerobic bacteria and fungi and the content of soil microbial biomass carbon (C) were found to increase with increasing silt content in the soils. Different activity of dehydrogenase was not observed among the different textures of soil. Microbial distribution, amount of microbial biomass C, and dehydrogenase activity in the soils were not significantly different among the topographic sites. However, in pear and grape fruit plant fields, coliform group of bacteria was found in relatively higher population, $133.0{\times}10^3\;CFU\;g^{-1}$ and $107.4{\times}10^3\;CFU\;g^{-1}$, respectively. Microbial groups were simplified and their density was reduced with increasing the cultivation periods of fruit plants. The soil microbial distribution was proportionally correlated with some of soil properties such as soil pH, soil organic matter (SOM) content, and exchangeable Mg content; in particular, the population of Bacillus sp. was proportionally correlated with soil pH and exchangeable Mg content. The amounts of microbial biomass C and the dehydrogenase activity in the soils were significantly correlated with the contents of SOM and exchangeable Ca ion (p<0.01).

Growth of One-Year-Old Pot-Cultivated 'Fuji'/M.9 Apple Trees under Different Concentrations of Nitrogen Fertilization (질소시비농도에 따른 1년생 사과 'Fuji'/M.9 포트묘목의 수체 생장)

  • The study was carried out to investigate growth of 48.6-L pot-cultivated 1-year-old 'Fuji'/M.9 apple trees depending on different levels of nitrogen concentration. While rise in tree growth was paralleled with increase of nitrogen concentration, more than 32 mM of nitrogen rather restrained tree growth. In particular, growth of 16 mM of nitrogen treated trees was satisfied with criteria for production of high-quality pot-cultivated nursery stocks. Although mineral contents of leaves were higher in 8 and 16 mM nitrogen treatments than commonly recommended mineral contents in apple orchards, such somewhat surplus minerals could be helpful for tree growth after transplanting to apple orchards. In addition, our result indicated that soils of 8 and 16 mM of nitrogen treated pots met appropriate criteria for soil chemical property of apple orchards. Thus, in the light of tree growth, mineral contents of leaves, and soil chemical property in the pots, 16 mM of nitrogen treatment is considered to be suitable for production of 1-year-old 'Fuji'/M.9 apple potted trees.

Prediction of Evapotranspiration from Grape Vines in Suwon with the FAO Penman-Monteith Equation (FAO Penman-Monteith 공식을 이용한 수원지역 포도 수체 증발산량 예측)

  • Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) Penman-Monteith (PM) equation is one of the most widely used equations for predicting evapotranspiration (ET) of crops. The ET rate and the base crop coefficients ($K_{cb}$) of the two different grape vines (i.e., Campbell Early and Kyoho) cultivated in Suwon were calculated by using the FAO PM equation. The ET rate of Campbell Early was $2.41\;mm\;day^{-1}$ and that of Kyoho was $2.22\;mm\;day^{-1}$ in August when the leaf area index was 2.2. During this period, the $K_{cb}$ of Campbell Early based on the FAO PM equation was on average 0.49 with the maximum value of 0.72. On the other hand, the $K_{cb}$ of Kyoho was averaged to be 0.45 with the maximum value of 0.64. The seasonal leaf area index for two grape cultivars was measured as 0.15 in April, 0.5 in May, 1.4 in June, 2.2 in July-September, and 1.5 in October. The $K_{cb}$ of Campbell Early showed a seasonal variation, changing from 0.03 in April to 0.11 in May, 0.31 in June, 0.49 in July-September, and 0.33 in October. The magnitudes and the seasonality of $K_{cb}$ of Kyoho were similar to those of Campbell Early.
