The relationship of maternal separation anxiety, availability of support system and child gender to initial preschool adjustment was examined. Data were collected on 72 middle-class Korean children(35 boys, 37 girls) between the ages of 31 months and 60 months who were entering preschool. Subjects were from intact families, all with non-working mothers. Mothers completed the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale(MSAS) and indicated the number of extended family members in the home as an index of social support. Classroom teachers completed the Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ) for each child after the first 2 weeks and again after 6 weeks of school. Each child was observed by the research team during the first 2 weeks of school and again after the 6th-week using the Child Observation System (COS). Applying the COS observed behavior was classified as being in the dependent, neutral, or active mode. All instruments were culturally relevant as validated by Korean experts. Maternal Separation Anxiety was a significant predictor for girls only, accounting for 11% of initial COS variance (p=<.05). In contrast, social support was a significant predictor for boys only, accounting for 28% of initial PBQ variance when entered after MSAS(p=.005). A significant difference between initial and 6th-week adjustment was obtained in the expected direction on the COS with behavior improving with time (t=-4.06, p=.001). Although a significant difference between initial and 6th-week PBQ adjustment was also obtained (t=-3.63, p=.001), it was not in the direction expected, problematic behavior were found to increase with time. Cultural and developmental factors help explain the findings. Given the patrilineal social system in Korea, boys are highly preferred over girls. Thus the at-home support system, comprised primarily of grandparents, may have a significant influence on school adjustment particularly of first-born sons. In contrast, since girls are viewed as fragile and vulnerable, mothers may express greater separation anxiety about girls. Finally, as would be expected, older children may be able to develop coping skills more readily than younger ones, as child adjustment on the COS significanlty improved over the 6-week period.
This study examines the relationships between grandparenting roles, elderly generativity, and depressive symptoms. Data were collected from 129 grandmothers who helped raise grandchildren attending daycare centers. Grandparenting roles were assessed as generational transferers, caretakers, emotional supporters, and educators. Elderly generativity and depressive symptoms were evaluated based on the Loyola Generativity Scale and CES-D (Center for Epidemiological Studies on Depression Scale), respectively. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, and regression analysis methods. According to the results, grandmothers were most likely to play a role as caretakers, and there were differences across factors correlated with grandparenting roles. More specifically, daily hours spent on grandparenting and years of grandparenting were related to the caretaker role, and a high level of education was related to the educator role. Poor health was correlated with the generational initiator role. According to correlation and regression analyses, grandmothers who had access to more economic resources and who served as educators, emotional supporters, or generation initiators were more likely to show generativity. In addition, the higher the generativity, the less likely the depressive symptom was. These results have important implications for developing programs that can help grandparents raise preschool-aged grandchildren and suggest some interesting avenues for future research.

The purposes of this study was to investigate high school girl students’concerns about the family life education in Home Economics and their needs for learning in home economics classes in order to develop an advisable co-education curriculum. The questionnaires were completed by 196 first grade students in Seoul in 1993 and 765 first grade students in Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefectures in 1991. The contents of the questionnaire were as follows:1) students’interests in the areas of Home Economics education, 2) students'concerns in their daily life 3) students’interests in a new curriculum for family life education:16 contents from human birth to death. 4) students’experience with their family, and 5) students’educational needs in Home Economics’teaching method. The result of our research showed that:1) Most of senior high school students in Korea and Japan had strong interests in their life and life span. 2) Although there are some differences in the degree of concerns between Korea and Japan, senior high school students in Korea and Japan had strong concerns with their “characteristics and personality”, their “future job”, their “looks and figure”and their “hobby and amusement”, these had not been the contents of home economics in Korea and Japan, but had been in U.S. 3) Very few senior high school students in Japan and especially in Korea had contacts with their grandparents. 4) Senior high school students in Korea and Japan showed strong interests in their near future stage, but they showed less interest in the stage of early childhood. 5) Senior high school students in Korea and Japan showed their diverse needs for learning in home economics classes. The results indicated that co-education curriculum for family life education should meet adolescent needs and concerns, and our new curriculum, “from one’s birth to death/one’s life span”, would be more advisable.
This study was undertaken to identify the level of the awareness and attitudes toward dementia in Korean adults. The data were collected from January 23 to April 30, 2016, with 95 adults visit to Senior Experience Complex located in Seongnam city in Korea, using self-reported questionnaires. The descriptive statistical data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient by SPSS 18.0. In this study, the mean scores of the level of the awareness and attitudes of dementia in Korean adults were showed over the neutral range, $12.97{\pm}1.55$, $4.13{\pm}0.48$ respectively. A significant differences between general characteristics and attitudes of dementia in Korean adults were shown in the level of a lived with grandparents, having the family history of dementia. It showed a significant positive relationship between the awareness and attitudes of dementia (r=0.773, p<.001). The findings of this study are to be a baseline data to develop the empowerment public program related in dementia.

This study examined the factors influencing aging anxiety in university students. The participants were 239 nursing students from one university in Seoul. Data were collected from September to December in 2014 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. The average score for aging-anxiety was 2.94, for knowledge about the elderly 18.92, for attitude toward the elderly 65.5, for participants' supporting awareness of old parents 4.05, and for self-esteem 3.07. There were negative correlations between aging anxiety, attitude toward the elderly, supporting awareness of old parents, and self-esteem. Aging-anxiety was significantly influenced by age, gender, living with grandparents, attitude toward the elderly, supporting awareness of old parents, and self-esteem. In view of the results of this study, one of the strategic ways to help college students reduce aging anxiety is to provide an opportunity to participate in activities that they can experience positive relationship with elderly.
This research aims to understand in depth and contextually of the grandchildren 's growth with their grandparents. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with observation and documents and analyzed using life history approach. The life history method was based on Mandelbaum(1973)'s framework including 'life dimensions', 'turning points', and 'adaptations'. After the analysis, central themes in each domain emerge as follows; 'social prejudice', 'growing poverty', 'a painstaking smile', 'more polite and honest', and 'being alone' in life dimensions, 'parentless children', 'a painful memory, outcast', and 'going to college' in turning points, and 'a willing person, parents', 'a blessed person', 'self-reliance and scale of economic life', and 'diligence and inborn cheerfulness' in adaptations, respectively. Based on these results, several intervention strategies and implications for healthy growth of grandchildren.
We are facing an era of automation where artificial intelligence works and an era of super-aging, where birth is rapidly declining. In this paper, we intend to perform the creation of an autobiography in conjunction with the generation integrated narrative storytelling, thereby exploring the potential for visual storytelling that can be extended to a variety of media format. The visual autobiography production program confirmed through an interview with the production participants that grandparents, grandchildren and granddaughter together became the main characters in the documentary, a valuable opportunity to reflect on their past memories and lives and recognize their meaning of life. The visual storytelling education program model and media life service presented in this paper will be shared by the youth and the elderly generation together and contribute to the 'sympathetic culture' as a social integration program.
Purpose: This study provides information for the development of educational programs for improving awareness of support to the elderly among adolescents. Methods: The 350 students of high schools located in Seoul were selected as subjects and surveyed using structured questionnaires during 11th~15th of April in 2014. The 327 subjects were used for analysis and the response rate was 93.4%. SPSS/WIN18.0 program was performed for t-test, ANOVA and regression analysis. Results: First, adolescents with parents aged over 50 compared to those with parents younger than 40 showed high level of awareness of support to the elderly. The high level of cognitive factors including image and perception towards the elderly (t=3.07, p=.01) were significant factors of awareness of support to the elderly. In experiential factors, adolescents with extensive influence of media and experiences with cohabitation with grandparents, and experiences with voluntary service activities were statistically significant with the high level of awareness of support to the elderly. Second, in regression analysis, adolescents' economic support awareness was higher with the stronger influence in the elderly-related media (${\beta}=.221$, p=.032). The emotional support awareness was higher among the eldest sons (${\beta}=.220$, p=.017) and perception (${\beta}=.352$, p=.001) to elderly (${\beta}=.221$, p=.032). Physical support awareness was higher when the positive image for the elderly (${\beta}=.223$, p=.016) and the high perception towards the elderly (${\beta}=.293$, p=.007). Conclusion: The awareness of support to the elderly should be constantly strengthened to the adolescents. Despite the rapid increase of the elderly, studies are not sufficient. Further research will be necessary.
Objective: This study was undertaken to investigate the genetic characteristics of Berkshire (BS), Landrace (LR), and Yorkshire (YS) pig breeds raised in the Great Grandparents pig farms using the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) information. Methods: A total of 25,921 common SNP genotype markers in three pig breeds were used to estimate the expected heterozygosity ($H_E$), polymorphism information content, F-statistics ($F_{ST}$), linkage disequilibrium (LD) and effective population size ($N_e$). Results: The chromosome-wise distribution of $F_{ST}$ in BS, LR, and YS populations were within the range of 0-0.36, and the average $F_{ST}$ value was estimated to be $0.07{\pm}0.06$. This result indicated some level of genetic segregation. An average LD ($r^2$) for the BS, LR, and YS breeds was estimated to be approximately 0.41. This study also found an average $N_e$ of 19.9 (BS), 31.4 (LR), and 34.1 (YS) over the last 5th generations. The effective population size for the BS, LR, and YS breeds decreased at a consistent rate from 50th to 10th generations ago. With a relatively faster $N_e$ decline rate in the past 10th generations, there exists possible evidence for intensive selection practices in pigs in the recent past. Conclusion: To develop customized chips for the genomic selection of various breeds, it is important to select and utilize SNP based on the genetic characteristics of each breed. Since the improvement efficiency of breed pigs increases sharply by the population size, it is important to increase test units for the improvement and it is desirable to establish the pig improvement network system to expand the unit of breed pig improvement through the genetic connection among breed pig farms.
Objective: The purpose of the current research is to collect basic data to diagnose the current status and to foresee the future research trends of young children's parent education programs published in South Korea from 2001 to 2020. Methods: Data collection was made out of RISS of Korea. Excel 2016 was used to categorize 210 finally filtered and collected data which included academic journal articles, MA/PhD dissertations, and funded research reports according to analysis criteria by publication year/5-year-term, research theme, research method, and researchers' academic area. Results: Annual/5-year-term analysis shows increasing trends of parent education programs for young children. Quantitative research was the most frequently implemented method, followed by literature reviews, qualitative research, and mixed research method in order. In research theme, parent-competency reinforcement program was the most frequently implemented theme followed by parent education, socio-emotional issue, special education for young children with special needs, family support, early childhood sex education, and program analysis in order. Education area showed the most active participation in parent education program for young children in comparing with other academic areas in research field. Conclusion/Implications: Research trends of young children's parent education programs showed steady increase in their amount, frequency, and diversity as well. Minority parents need more attentions for providing the next young generation's educational equality. Parent programs during COVID-19 need to gain more research attentions as well as care-giving grandparents, social workers, and public health care helpers in child caring service areas in order to alleviate low-birth rate.
