  • Ba or La-Substituted lead niobate $(Pb_{1-x}Ba_x)_{1-y}La_{2y/3}Nb_2O_6$(PBLN), powders having needle shape are prepared by flux method using KCl and the effect of Ba or La substitution on morphology of obtained powders is examined. From these needle shape powders, grain-oriented ceramics are made by doctor-blade method and two-stage hot-pressing technique. The dielectric, piezoelectric and optical properties of the ceramics are also investigaated. Heating condition and the amount of substituted Ba or La have remarkable effects have large anisotropy in both permittivity and coupling factor depending on the pressing direction.

  • The magnetic domain-refining techniques such as ball scratching, laser irradiation and plasma have been developed to reduce the domain wall spacing and thus iron losses in Fe-3%Si grain-oriented silicon steels. In view point of magnetic properties, it was supposed that the locally residual stresses change the magnetoelastic energy of the material and thus the spacing between $180^{\circ}$ domain walls decreases in order to reduce the magnetostatic energy. The effect of laser irradiation on iron loss and magnetostriction reduction for Fe-3%Si grain-oriented steel were investigated. Since the local tensile stresses were induced at the surface of Fe-3%Si steel by the laser irradiation, the minimum iron loss caused by reducing eddy current loss was obtained in spiete of the decrease of permeability by hindering eddy current loss was obtained in spite of the decrease of permeability by hindering the domain wall movement around the induced stress field. Furthermore, the laser treated 3%Si steel has lower magnetostriction as compared to non laser-treated steel and is less sensitive to applying pre-stresses due to the volume reduction of $90^{\circ}$ domain in materials.

  • In this paper, a high efficiency leakage transformer for neon tube is developed to improve its power factor, to reduce its core loss and weight by using a technique of shape optimization and direction of grain-oriented silicon steel sheet. A protection circuit is designed for all types of neon transformer loaded with one or more neon lamps. Whenever the neon tube fails to be started up or comes to the life end, or encounters faults with open-circuits at the output terminals of the neon transformer, the protection circuit will be initiated to avoid more critical hazards. These neon transformers need a protection circuit to prevent from current stresses on circuit components by neon tube fail. The input of the transformer is automatically cut off when the abnormal condition occurs, preventing waste of no-load power. As the results of the study, the core weight is reduced by $11\%$, the power factor improved by $5\%$ and the efficiency increased by $6\%$ compared with the conventional type due to the employment of the grain-oriented steel sl)eel and the optimized core shape.

  • In-situ neutron diffraction has been employed to examine the effect of strain path on lattice strain evolution during monotonic and cyclic tension in an extruded Mg-8.5wt.%Al alloy. In the cyclic tension test, the maximum applied stress increased with cycle number. Lattice strain data were acquired for three grain orientations, characterized by the plane normal to the stress axis. The lattice strain in the hard {10.0} orientation, which is unfavorably oriented for both basal slip and {10.2} extension twinning, evolved linearly throughout both tests during loading and unloading. The {00.2} orientation exhibited significant relaxation associated with {10.2} extension twinning. Coupled with a linear lattice strain unloading behavior, this relaxation led to increasingly compressive residual strains in the {00.2} orientation with increasing cycle number. The {10.1} orientation is favorably oriented for basal slip, and thus showed a soft grain behavior. Microyielding occurred in the monotonic tension test and in all cycles of the cyclic test at an applied stress of ~50 MPa, indicating that strain hardening in this orientation was not completely stable from one cycle to the next. The lattice strain unloading behavior was linear in the {10.1} orientation, leading to a compressive residual strain after every cycle, which, however, did not increase systematically from one cycle to the next as in the {00.2} orientation.

  • The previous expression for the diffracted neutron intensity by a highly oriented polycrystalline is modified using the Kunitomi's formula of the crystal reflectivity The method of studying the preferred orientation in metals with white neutron is proposed utilizing the above formula and the fact that the real position of the diffraction of certain grain in the sample can be found by the comparison of the smaller angle part of the maxwellian curve of the calculated intensity of neutrons diffracted and the experimenal curves. The most probable wavelength of thermal neutrons from the reactor is found by the measurement of the neutron spectrum with the correction for the crystal about the multiple reflection and the absorption of neutrons and turned out to be 1.025 $\pm$ 0.001$\AA$. The preferred orientations of some electric steel sheets, mostly with the cube-on-face orientations, are investigated by the present method. The orientations of most grains relative to the rolling directions are found to be within 5 degrees. It is found the most of theories for large crystals may be extended to highly oriented polycrystalline materials without extensive modification.

  • Morden electronic equipments are becoming very important in information oriented society, but they are vulnerable to lightning surges. Soil resistivity in the vicinity of grounding electrodes my be affected by the current flowing from the grounding electrodes into the surrounding soil. Electrical conduction in soils depends on the grain size, compactness, and variability of the grain sizes. When a high current is injected into the soil, and the breakdown phenomenon occur. In the present work, Electrical behaviors related to discharge in soils were investigated. The breakdown voltages in soil were lower than that sparkover voltage in air. The breakdown voltage in the gravel layer is relatively low, and the breakdown was caused by the flashover through the surface of gravels

  • A simulation modeling is necessary for the optimal design of a rice processing plant, which consists of a facility (a silo system) of rice drying and storage and a rice mill plant. In a rice processing plant, the production scheduling and the decision on capcity of each unit based on a queuing theory is very important and difficult. In this study a process-oriented simulation model was developed for the design of a rice drying and storage system with SLAMSYSTEM. The simulation model is capable of simulating virtually all the processing activities and provides work schedules which minimize total processing time , mean flow time and bottleneck of the plant system and estimate drying time for a batch in a drying silo. Model results were used for determination the size and capacity of each processing unit and for analyzing the performance of the plant . The developed model was actually applied to construct a grain silo system for rice drying and storage.

  • This paper presents a simulation methodology for the poly-silicon oriented TCAD(technology-CAD) system. A computer simulation environment for the poly-silicon processing has been set up with the proper adoption of the two-stream model for ion-doping, diffusion, and defects inside of grain and on the grain boundary. After the simulator calibration, simulation results for the poly-silicon diffusion hat shown a good agreement with the SIMS data.

  • C-axis-oriented ZnO thin films were successfully deposited on p-Si (100) in an RF magnetron sputtering system. Deposition conditions such as deposition power, working pressure, and oxygen gas ratio $O_2/(O_2+Ar)$ were varied. Crystalline structures of the deposited ZnO films were investigated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) technique. Results show that the deposition parameters can have a strong impact on the preferred orientations and grain sizes of the deposited ZnO films.
