The ductile-brittle transition behavior of two austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N-C alloys with different grain sizes was investigated in this study. The alloys exhibited a ductile-brittle transition behavior because of an unusual brittle fracture at low temperatures unlike conventional austenitic alloys. The alloy specimens with a smaller grain size had a higher yield and tensile strengths than those with a larger grain size due to grain refinement strengthening. However, a decrease in the grain size deteriorated the low-temperature toughness by increasing the ductile-brittle transition temperature because nitrogen or carbon could enhance the effectiveness of the grain boundaries to overcome the thermal energy. It could be explained by the temperature dependence of the yield stress based on low-temperature tensile tests. In order to improve both the strength and toughness of austenitic Fe-Cr-Mn-N-C alloys with different chemical compositions and grain sizes, more systematic studies are required to understand the effect of the grain size on the mechanical properties in relation to the temperature sensitivity of yield and fracture stresses.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation between physical stream characteristics and bed materials in natural rivers. Accordingly, four natural rivers were selected reference streams, they were Nam river, Sumjin River, Naesung River and Han River. Grain size distributions of bed materials were gravels, cobbles and boulders in Han river and Nam river, were sand, gravels, cobbles and boulders in Sumjin river and were sand in Naesung river. Four reference streams were divided into each two reference reaches (straight and bend) by plan and profile characteristics of naturally meandering stream. Therefore various reference reaches were chosen in the aspect of physical stream characteristics and grain size distributions. The results investigated and analyzed are as follows. The streams that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were coarse were stable because they had variety of bed slope without sediment deposition, and then the riffles frequency and the physical characteristics were various. Also, velocitydepth regime were various in four kinds, and the response parts for water level change were small, so that channel flow status were stable and excellent condition. On the other hand, sand river that grain sizes distributions of river bed materials were fine had not the variety of parameters as velocity-depth regimes, sediment deposition, channel flow status and riffles frequency, so that the physical stream characteristics were not various.
Marphysa sanguinea is the most well-known polychaete species with a high economic value. However, this species has a high mortality in the early rearing stage of aquaculture. This study was conducted to find out the optimal substrate size and organic contents for the growth and survival rate of M. sanguinea larvae and juveniles. It was observed that the smaller grain size (<Ø 0.063 mm) and high organic contents (5-10%) induced settlement and reduced settlement time of larvae. Moreover, the growth and survival rate of larvae reached high levels at Ø 0.004-0.016 mm of grain sizes and 5-7.5% of organic contents as advantageous substrates for settlement. The survival rate of juveniles reached over 90% in less than Ø 0.016 mm substrate on 15-day experiment for different grain sizes of substrates. These results indicated that substrate compositions of less than Ø 0.016 mm of sand size and 5-7.5% of organic contents in mud will enhance the productivity of M. sanguinea at the early stage.
The source regions of Asian Dusts (Yellow Sands) in the western part of China are investigated, and the soil samples are collected samples for approximately 15 days during the spring of 2005. Particle sizes of sediments are analyzed and compared with each other. These grain-size analyses from the source areas can be compared Particle sizes between loess deposits and desert sands in western part of China and desert areas show distinctive differences. Loess deposits are predominantly composed of fine sands and silts. The distinction between the final characteristics of Asian Dust particles arrived in Korea and characteristics during transportation can be recognized comparison with the Asian Dust particles collected where the dust particles settled down. The characteristics of Asian Dust particle sizes can provide the basic information regarding the transportation history from the source region.
In this paper a finite element based system is presented for the prediction of the distributions of the recrystallized grain sizes in the workpiece in hot forging. The system adopts a fully coupled finite element thermo-mechanical model for predicting plastic deformation and heat transfer occurring in the workpiece and employs existing metallurgical models relating the recrystalliza-tion behavior with the thermo-mechanical variables such as temperatures strain and strain rate. The system is applied to upsetting of cylindrical preform. The predicted grain sizes are compared with the measurements. It is further applied to forging of a complex-shaped product.
Thin films of phase-pure perovskite $(Pb_{0.72}La_{0.28})Ti_{0.93}O_3$ (PLT) were deposited in-situ onto Pt/Ti/$SiO_2$/Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition. We have systematically investigated the variation of grain sizes depending on the process condition. Both in-situ annealing and ex-situ annealing treatments have been compared depending on the annealing time. The grain sizes of PLT thin films were successfully controlled 260 to 350 nm by changing process parameters. Microstructural and electrical properties of the film were investigated by C-V measurement, leakage current measurement and SEM. Two-step process to grow $(Pb_{0.72}La_{0.28})Ti_{0.93}O_3$ (PLT) films was adopted and verified to be useful to enlarge the grain size of the film and to enhance the leakage current characteristics.
Cu-Fe alloys (CFAs) are much anticipated for use in electrical contacts, magnetic recorders, and sensors. The low cost of Fe has inspired the investigation of these alloys as possible replacements for high-cost Cu-Nb and Cu-Ag alloys. Here, alloys of Cu and Fe having compositions of $Cu_{100-x}Fe_x$ (x = 10, 30, and 50 wt.%) are prepared by gas atomization and characterized microstructurally and structurally based on composition and powder size with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Grain sizes and Fe-rich particle sizes are measured and relationships among composition, powder size, and grain size are established. Same-sized powders of different compositions yield different microstructures, as do differently sized powders of equal composition. No atomic-level alloying is observed in the CFAs under the experimental conditions.
Partially stabilized zironia with magnesia (Mg-PSZ) is known as one of the toughest monolithic ceramics. However, the very large grain sizes obtained after sintering at a high solution-heat treatment temperature in the cubic region of the phase diagram limit the strength of this material rather modest. In this study fine-grained Mg-PSZ materials were fabricated by adding TiC particles as a dispersed phase. Samples were hot-pressed at $1750^{\circ}C$ and then annealed at $1420^{\circ}C$ for various times. Grain growth was retarded severely by the TiC particles resulting in grain sizes smaller by more than one order of magnitude than those of PSZ without TiC. The fine-grained microstructure lead to doubly-increased fracture strength while maintaining the same level of high fracture toughness as that of conventional Mg-PSZ without TiC particles.

To investigate sliding friction and wear behaviors of WC-Co/WC-Co pairs containing different WC grain sizes, the ball-on-disc test in air were carried out, where WC grain sizes a $0.5\;{\mu}m$ (F.G.) and $1.5\;{\mu}m$ (C.G.). The wear volume of F.G. pin for F.G. pin/C.G. disc is larger than that of F.G. pin for F.G. pin/F.G. disc due to higher friction coefficient, and the surfaces after wear test are richer in oxygen compared to those before test. Furthermore, the wear debris, which is composed of nona-scale grain, after the wear test are remarkably richer in oxygen than to those before test.
One of the characteristics of polycrystalline graphene that determines its material properties is grain size. Mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, yield strain and tensile strength depend on the grain size and show a reverse Hall-Petch effect at small grain size limit for some properties under certain conditions. While there is agreement on the grain size effect for Young's modulus and yield strain, certain MD simulations have led to disagreement for tensile strength. Song et al. showed a decreasing behavior for tensile strength, that is, a pseudo Hall-Petch effect for the small grain size domain up to 5 nm. On the other hand, Sha et al. showed an increasing behavior, a reverse Hall-Petch effect, for grain size domain up to 10 nm. Mortazavi et al. also showed results similar to those of Sha et al. We suspect that the main difference of these two inconsistent results is due to the different modeling. The modeling of polycrystalline graphene with regular size and (hexagonal) shape shows the pseudo Hall-Petch effect, while the modeling with random size and shape shows the reverse Hall-Petch effect. Therefore, this study is conducted to confirm that different modeling is the main reason for the different behavior of tensile strength of the polycrystalline structures. We conducted MD simulations with models derived from the Voronoi tessellation for two types of grain size distributions. One type is grains of relatively similar sizes; the other is grains of random sizes. We found that the pseudo Hall-Petch effect and the reverse Hall-Petch effect of tensile strength were consistently shown for the two different models. We suspect that this result comes from the different crack paths, which are related to the grain patterns in the models.
