  • This study was conducted to evaluate an early-maturing rice cultivars adaptable to early transplanting cultivation in Yeongnam plain area. High temperature during the ripening stage of paddy rice under the early-transplanting cultivation in Yeongnam plain was to influence in several agronomic traits such as number of spikelet, ripening ratio, grain appearance of milled rice, and yield. 'Gounbyeo' and 'Junghwabyeo' were better than the others in grain appearance of milled rice and ripening ratio, but their yield potential were lower than that of the other varieties. Moreover, 'Gounbyeo' and 'Junghwabyeo' showed high ratio of broken rice. 'Unkwangbyeo' was the highest in yield and eating quality among the tested varieties, but also high percentage of white core and belly in milled rice. Therefore, in order to recommend those cultivars to farmers, it should be needed to establish an optimal cultivation method, such as transplanting density, fertilizer application, and harvesting time, etc. consequently, it should also be required to develop a new varieties with high ripening capability under high temperature condition.

  • The knowledge of grain growth of carbide particles is very important for manufacturing micrograined cemented carbides. In the present study, continuous and discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides is investigated using the Monte Carlo computer simulation technique. The Ostwald ripening process (solution/re-precipitation) and the grain boundary migration process are assumed in the simulation as the grain growth mechanism. The effects of liquid phase fraction, grain boundary energy and implanted coarse grain are examined. At higher liquid phase content, mass transfer via solid/liquid interfaces plays a major role in grain growth. Growth rate of the implanted grain was higher than that of the matrix grains through solution/re-precipitation and coalescence with neighboring grains. The results of these simulations qualitatively agree with experimental ones and suggest that distribution of liquid phase and carbide particle/carbide grain boundary energy as well as contamination by coarse grain are important factors controlling discontinuous grain growth in WC-Co and WC-VC-Co cemented carbides. The contamination by coarse grains must by avoided in the manufacturing process of fine grain cemented carbides, especially with low Co.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the change yield and grain quality in rice caused by damages of brown planthopper (Bph) on major agronomic traits at the ripening stage. A major agronomic traits such as culm length, panicle length, number of panicle and number of grain per panicles was no-significant difference compared hopperburn area (HBA) and moderately damaged area (MDA) by brown planthopper with non-damaged area (NDA). but, the ripeing ratio and yield in HBA and MDA was significantly decreased. The perfect rice of brown rice in HBA and MDA was also lowered than the NDA and the immatured grain among imperfect rice in damaged area by BPH was significantly increased than in the NDA. Among the traits related with palatability of cooked rice, the amylose content was not affected by damage of brown planthopper, whereas, the protein content was significantly increased in the HBA and MDA. additionally, Peak viscosity in HBA and MDA is lower than the NDA, and setback was increased. In most cases, there was negative on yield and grain quality by the damage of brown planthopper at the ripening stage. Thus, the rice product harvested in damaged area should be separated with that in non damaged area for grain market quality of milled rice.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the translocation pattern of photosynthate labelled by $^{14}C$ in rice cultivars and the effects of nutrient composition on the translocation in rice plant during ripening, Showing coincidence between the grain filling rate and the translocation of $^{14}C$ into the grain during ripening period, the translocation patterns of cultivars tested were grouped by three; 1) the late dominance type (Akibare), 2) the early dominance type (Taebaegbyeo, Chupungbyeo), and 3) the semi-late dominance type (Milyang #23, Milyang #42, and Yushin). The negative relation ship existed between the translocation ratio of $^{14}C$ into the grain and the nitrogen content in plants, but not significant, The nutrient depletion of P, K, Ca, Mg, and Si in water medium from the panicle initiation to the heading stage resulted in the decrease of grain weight by 4 to 12 percent and the increase of translocation of $^{14}C$ into grain assimilated at heading. The effect of resupply of these nutrients after heading was recognized by the order of P>Mg>K and Ca. But the effect of Si resupply was hardly recognized in increasing grain weight. The photosynthetic rate was greatly affected by the nitrogen status and the depletion of P, K, and Ca decreased the photosynthetic rate in single leaf at heading, while the depletion of Si enhanced the rate.

  • Heat stress during the ripening stage reduces the yield and quality of rice. Considering the adverse effects of global warming, it is necessary to breed heat stress tolerant rice cultivars and analyze their stress tolerance characteristics. We investigated the ripening characteristics and antioxidant enzyme activity of Ilmi under heat stress condition during the ripening stage. Ripening rate, 1000 brown grain weight, and rice quality of Ilmi were not significantly changed by heat stress during the ripening stage. Leaf chlorophyll, chlorophyll a/b ratio, and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents of Ilmi leaves were also less changed than those of Ilpum. These results strongly suggested that Ilmi has heat tolerance characteristics during the ripening stage. Analysis of antioxidant enzyme activity of Ilmi revealed that peroxidase (POX) activity was significantly higher than that of Ilpum, and showed a significant correlation with the change in chlorophyll a/b ratio and hydrogen peroxide content of flag leaves of Ilmi. These data suggest that the high POX enzyme activity of Ilmi could be considered one of its major heat tolerance characteristics.

  • The experiment was conducted to know the varietal difference in changing aspect of daily filling sink during of rice using three cultivars; ‘Suweon 295’ (japonica), ‘Suwoen 264’ and ‘IR 1317-70-1’ (semi-dwarf indica) cultivated in the field and green house of the Crop Experiment Station in 1983. There was not significant varietal difference in flowering habit and duration of flowering period each panicle. Semi-dwarf indica cultivars showed shorter days to physiological maturity of rice kernel than the japonica one. The former also displayed earlier decrease in water content of rice grain during ripening than the latter. Japonica variety revealed larger difference in ripening advancement between vigorous florets and inferior one than semi-dwarf indica varieties. The semi-dwarf indica rice cultivars expressed significantly shrewder parabola of daily filling of sink per panicle during ripening than the japonica one. The time showing maximum capacity of daily filling of sink per panicle during ripening was 10-12 days after anthesis. The filling capacity of daily sink filling per panicle for 'IR 1317-70-1', 'Suweon 264' and 'Suweon 265' at this time were about 240 mg, 165 mg and 145 mg, respectively. Pattern of sink filling per panicle during ripening was slightly changed by the cultural environment. ‘Suweon 295’ showed slightly sharper parabola and 2-3 days earlier time showing maximum capcity of daily sink demand per panicle during ripening in the field than those in the green house.

  • In 1980, rice was considerably damaged by abnormal low temperature. In this paper, to determine the effect of low temperature on the growth and nutrition of rice, the experiment were carried out: varietal response to low temperature in the region with different elevations. Regional differences of heading response to low temperature were observed among varieties. The difference of days between regions were bigger in tongil lines than Japonica lines. Especially, Milyang 42 and Hangangchalbeo might belong the cold suceptible group, since the varieties were severely delayed their heading in the high mountainous region as comparred to plain region. The delay of heading with low temperature was brought out grain sterility, and fertility and ripening ratio is influenced cold tolerance and elevations, and it's decreased yield. Varieties with higher grain sterility by low temperature have higher total nitrogen content, but tended to have lower potassium and phosphate contents in the flag leaf. High content of total nitrogen, low contents of potassium and silicate were observed in the sterilized grain chaff an the opposite result were noted in the ferilized grain chaff at the ripening stage. The results reveal that the balance of these mineral element may play an important role in ripening and possibly cold tolerance.

  • The weekly change of sugar and starch content in unfilled grain of Jinheung (temperate rice var.) and IR667-Suweon 214 (tropical rice var.) and of filled grain ratio (less than specific gravity 1.06 for Jinheung and 1.03 for IR667), filled grain weight and unfilled grain weight from flowering and the relationship among them were as fallows. 1. Total sugar content in unfilled grain was twice in Jinheung than in IR667 and starch content was higher (about 2.5 to 3.5%) in Jinheung but starch/sugar ratio was greater in IR667. Thus IR667 that was classified as high sugar type in leaf sheath and internode appears to be high starch type in sink (grain). 2. Under the favorable condition the weight of unfilled grain reached to minimum value and followed by maximum filled grain ratio and lastly by maximum weight of filled grains per ear. 3. Sugar and starch content gradually increased and then decreased during ripening and the maximum values reached prior to maximum filled grain ratio (6 weeks). Sugar content reached to maximum much earlier than starch content did and increased again from 8 weeks later. 4. Starch/sugar ratio reached to maximum value earlier than maximum starch content and earlier in IR667 than in Jinheung. 5. Maximum starch content of unfilled grain in Jinheung was 51.1%.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the varietal differences in leaf senescence during ripening stage and its relation to grain yield of rice. During grain filling period leaf senescence was evaluated by SPAD readings (an indirect indicator of chlorophyll content) for 74 varieties including local, improved domestic, and introduced varieties in the field condition. Leaf senescence was varied greatly among 74 varieties. Jodongji and Dadajo known as local rice varieties had significantly lower SPAD value than the other varieties and became senescent rapidly. However, SPAD value of the flag leaf and 2nd leaf of SNU-SG1 were much higher than the other varieties and leaves of SNU-SG1 also showed a tendency of delayed senescence compared to the other varieties. There were significantly positive correlation between cumulated SPAD value of upper leaf(flag leaf and 2nd leaf) during 35 days after heading and grain yield divided by sunshine hour during 40 days of grain filling and compensated for temperature effect, and cumulated SPAD value of the 4th leaf showed negative correlation with the yield. That is, the delayed senescence of the upper leaves and the rapid senescence of lower leaves were positively associated with grain yield increase.
