  • The relationships between rice grain filling and air temperature of maturing period in paddy field were analyzed to evaluate the effects of climatic change on rice productivity in Korea. Data of air temperature of 31, 41 and 51 days after heading(DAH) for 11 years from 2002 to 2016 were collected and analyzed to determine the effects on rice yield and yield component related traits of Chucheogbyeo, popular cultivar in Gyeonggi province in Korea. As the results, ripening ratio was closely correlated with the mean of daily maximum temperature (DMAT $r=0.71^*$), the mean of daily temperature difference (DTD, $r=0.67^*$) of 41 DAH and DTD ($0.65^*$) of 51 DAH. Weight of 1,000 paddy rice grains was closely correlated with accumulated sunshine hours (ASH) of 31 ($r=0.84^{**}$), 41 ($r=0.75^{**}$), 51 ($r=0.72^*$) DAH. Brown rice grain weight recovery ratio was closely correlated with DTD ($r=0.76^{**}$) and ASH ($r=0.84^{**}$) of 31 DAH, DMAT ($r=0.75^{**}$, $r=0.79^{**}$), DTD ($r=0.79^{**}$, $r=0.77^{**}$) and ASH ($r=0.81^{**}$, $r=0.79^{**}$) of 41 and 51 DAH. Paddy rice yield was closely correlated with MDT ($r=-0.63^*$) of 31 DAH, mean of daily minimum temperature (DMIT, $r=-0.83^{**}$, $r=-0.70^*$), DTD ($r=0.71^*$, $r=0.62^*$) of 31 and 41 DAH. Brown rice yield was correlated closely with DMIT ($r=-0.86^{**}$, $r=-0.73^*$) and DTD ($r=0.80^{**}$, $r=0.72^*$) of 31, 41 DAH, and DTD ($r=0.69^*$) of 51 DAH. Milled rice yield was correlated closely with DMIT ($r=-86^{**}$, $r=-0.73^*$), DTD ($r=0.79^{**}$, $r=0.71^*$) of 31, 41 DAH, and DTD ($r=0.68^*$) of 51 DAH.

  • The yield of Unkwangbyeo transplanted on May 10 was 596kg/10a in 2010. The rice yield decreased with delaying transplanting date. The head rice rate was 91.9% when transplanted in June 10, and the rate decreased as the transplanting got earlier. In 2011, the yield increased by 5~8% when transplanted on June 10 because of the increase of Ripened grain ratio and 1,000 grain weight. The yield, when transplanted in the distance of $30{\times}13cm$ with 5 plants, was higher than the other treatments. The yield of Oraebyeo, transplanted on June 10, decreased by 6% compared with transplanting on May 25, while the yield, transplanted in the distance of $30{\times}13cm$ with 5 plants, increased by 5% because of the increase in the number/$m^2$ of panicle and grain. The head rice rates of the two varieties increased by 5~7% and the Toyo palatability appeared to get improved when transplanted on June 10 possibly because of the effect of low ripening temperature by 0.9~$1.6^{\circ}C$ with delaying heading date from 9 to 12 days.

  • This experiment was conducted to study effect of cold water damage on some growth characters related to source and sink at reproductive growth stage in Jinan (sea level 303m). The cold water irrigation duration had irrigated 4, 8 and 12 days at panicle formation stage and reproduction division stage compared to perennial water irrigation. Cold water irrigation shortened culm length and panicle length and degree of panicle exsertion. The shortening effect appeared great at lower internodes when treated at panicle formation stage but at higher internodes when treated at reduction division stage. Cold water irrigation decreased the number of secondary branches and spikelets per panicle, and increased the number of degenerated spikelets being high degeneration when treated at panicle formation stage. Spikelet sterility and impediment of grain filling were affected by duration of cold water irrigation being great when treated at spikelet primodium differentiation stage and reduction division stage in particular. Grain weight was also reduced. Significant relationship existed between spikelets sterility, grain filling and yield. The degeneration of secondary branches and spikelets correlated with leaf area but spikelet sterility and yield with culm length, panicle length and panicle exsertion.

  • Recently, the yield potential of high yield Tongil-type rice varieties has greatly increased, reaching 817kg/10a(Geumgang No.1). Moreover, in order to promote rice consumption and strengthen the competitiveness of the rice processing industry, the R&D of high yield Tongil-type rice varieties for each processing purpose, such as rice noodles, grain feed and industrial materials, has been continuously carried out. However, because Tongil-type rice varieties or lines are generally very vulnerable to cold damage, cold tolerance test can be said to be absolutely necessary to improve the cultivation safety. This study is the result of the seedling and field cold tolerance characteristic tests carried out in 2021 of high yield Tongil-type rice breeding lines. For the cold tolerance characteristic test of seedlings, total 303 high yield rice breeding lines for processing were treated in cold water of 13℃ and irrigation depth of 4cm for 10 days from the third-leaf age, then it was evaluated by comparing the degree of discoloration and withering with the checked varieties(Boramchan, Hanahreum No.2). Also, for the test of field, total 186 high yield rice breeding lines for processing were treated in cold water of 17℃ by keeping pouring day and night from 30 days after transplanting to ripening stage, then it was evaluated by comparing the degree of discoloration, delay of heading, shortening rate of stem length and percent of fertile grain etc. with the checked varieties. And the cold tolerance evaluative criteria were classified as strong(1~3), medium(4~6) and weak(7~9) in overall cold tolerance. (Seedling test) As for the degree of cold tolerance of the check variety, 'Boramchan' and 'Hanahreum No.2' showed a response of 'medium' and 'weak', respectively. However, there was no 'strong' line in the high yield rice breeding lines, 2 lines showed a 'medium' response, and 301 lines showed a 'weak' response. Therefore, except for a few lines(0.7%), most lines(99.3%) showed a 'weak' response. (Field test) In terms of the overall cold tolerance of the check variety, both 'Boramchan' and 'Hanahreum No.2' showed a 'medium' response. Similarly, there was no 'strong' line in the case of high yield rice breeding lines, 20 lines showed a 'medium' response, and 166 lines showed a 'weak' response. Therefore, except for some(10.8%) lines, most(89.2%) lines showed a 'weak' response. From the above results, we selected about 100 individuals with less seed shattering and degeneration of the ear tip, and with a relatively high percent of fertile grain, and are continuing to select lines with improved cold tolerance in the F4~F5 group in this year. As such, most of the Tongil-type rice varieties have poor cold tolerance and thus have low cultivation safety at low temperatures. However, it is important to select improved lines through generational progress because there are some lines that still have a certain level of cold tolerance among them.

  • Degree of grain shattering which is of varietal character is an important determinant for the magnitude of field loss of grains during harvest and threshing. Seven Indica \times Japonica progeny varieties and four Japonica varieties were subjected to measurements of tensile strength of grains, degree of grain shattering when panicles were dropped at 1.5m above concrete floor, and moisture content of grains (wet basis) during a period 35 to 63 days after heading. In addition, two varieties were tested for the relation of tensile strength of grains to the magnitude of field loss of grains in actual binder harvest. The 11 varieties differed conspicuously in tensile strength of grains and the degree of grain shattering: the weakest average tensile strength of grains of a variety was about 90g and the strongest about 250g with varying standard deviation of 30 to 60g. Three Indica \times Japonica varieties and one Japonica variety shattered I to 30% of the grains under the falling test. The threshold tensile strength of grains allowing grain shattering was estimated to be 180g on average for a sampling unit of 10 panicles, but only the grains having tensile strength weaker than 98g within the samples shattered. A decrease in average tensile strength by 10g below the threshold value corresponded to an increase of 3 to 5% in grain shattering. Most varieties did not change appreciably the tensile strength of grains and degree of grain shattering with delay in time of harvest and showed a negative correlation between the tensile strength and the moisture content of grains. The average tensile strength of grains was negatively correlated linearly with field loss in binder harvest. The average tensile strength for zero field loss in binder harvest was estimated to be 174g and a decrease in the average tensile strength by 10g corresponded to an increase of 40kg per hectare in field loss of grains. Instead of the average tensile strength of grains, the percentage of grains having tensile strength weaker than 100g is recommended as a criterion for the estimation of field loss of grains during harvesting operations as well as a basis of variety classification for grain shattering, since the standard deviation of tensile strength of grains varies much with variety and time of harvest, and individual grains having tensile strength stronger than 98 did not shatter practically.

  • Objectives of this study was to find the effect on two different nitrogen levels about agricultural characteristics of CNU rice lines developed at Crop Genetics and Breeding Laboratory, Chungnam Nat'l Univ.. Materials used were two black and one white glutinous rice lines, which were transplanted by hand with $30{\times}15cm$ at CNU paddy field on May 23, 2009. These lines was designed with two replication by two nitrogen levels as 7kg and 9kg per 10a. As the result; Culm length of all lines used were higher at 7kg than 9kg per 10a while panicle length was longer at 9kg nitrogen level. Tillers per plant of CNU 08-01 and CNU 08-02 lines except CNU 08-101 showed highly at 9kg level, but that of other leading varieties were not constant trends in spite of increasing nitrogen. Ripening ratio of CNU 08-01 and 08-02 lines were higher at 7kg but CNU 08-101 line was higher at 9kg. 1,000 grain weight and unhulled rice yield per 20 plants in all CNU lines were highly appeared at 9kg levels per 10a.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the ear and kernel characteristics of waxy corn during ripening by double cropping, and to understand the pattern of starch accumulation in endosperm of waxy corn kernels. Chalok4 and Ilmichal were sown at April 20 (first cropping) and July 20 (second cropping) in 2011~2012. The accumulated temperature from silking to harvesting was about $590{\sim}630^{\circ}C$. It takes 23~24 days when Chalok4 and Ilmichal were sown in April 20, but July 20 sowing takes 32~35 days. Ear length and kernel set length were significantly shorter in second cropping (p<0.05). Kernel length, kernel width, 100-kernel weight, and starch content of waxy corn were increased as ears matured (p<0.05). Growth temperature was getting decreased during the ripening stage of second cropping, the rate of ear and kernel development had slowed. Starch granules started to accumulate in the cells around the pericarp, then developed in the cells around the embryo. In the second cropping, starch granules in the kernel of waxy corn were less compact than the first cropping, harvesting time of waxy corns can be extended. These results will be helpful to farmers for double cropping of waxy corn cultivation and management.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the kernel characteristics of sweet corn during ripening with different sowing date. Godangok and Guseulok were sown at April 10, July 10, July 20, and July 30 in 2013. Irrespective of sowing date, fresh and dry weight of 100 kernel, starch content, crude fat content, and hardness of sweet corn kernels were significantly increased according to maturation (p<0.05). But moisture content, total sugar content, crude protein content and crude ash content of sweet corn kernels were significantly decreased according to maturation (p<0.05). The changing rates of 100 kernel weight and starch content on kernels were faster at early sowing date than at late sowing date. The moisture content of sweet corn kernels was 68~69% at optimum for harvesting. The degree of sweetness on Godangok was about 1.8 and 1.4 times higher in sowing at July 20 and July 30 than in sowing at April 10. On the other hand, the degree of sweetness was similar regardless of sowing time on Guseulok. These results will be helpful to farmers for fall-harvest sweet corn cultivation and management.

  • Experiment were conducted to study the photosynthetic ability of several rice varieties and the influence of the drymatter production on the yield components of the rice plant, especially in ripening period. The photosynthetic ability at the ripening period, the varieties were classified into two groups as relatively high capacity and low capacity. With the earlier the transplanting date and the higher the N-content leaf blade, the greater the ratio of reserved assimilates befere heading time to the ear. This could be support the fact that the rate of full-ripened grains or grain yield of 'Tongil' variety may increased by the change of environment condition.condition.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different sowing times (May 25, June 10, June 25, July 10, and July 25) on growth and yield of four proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) cultivars (Hwanggeumkijang, Manghongchal, Ibaekchal, and Hwangsilchal) at a cultivation area in Iksan, Jeonbuk Province. Heading and ripening times were delayed, with later sowing times in all cultivars, and the periods for heading and ripening were shortened. For sowing from May 25 to July 25, the growth stage was shorter by 40 days in Manghongchal, 38 days in Hwanggeumkijang, 36 days in Hwangsilchal, and 30 days in Ibaekchal. The culm length, ear length, ear width, and culm diameter differed significantly between the cultivars and sowing times. In particular, the culm and ear lengths were considerably reduced when the sowing time was delayed. The grain yield (kg/10a) of Hwanggeumkijang and Ibaekchal was 312 and 359 kg, respectively, for sowing on June 10; and that of Manhongchal and Hwangsilchal was 286 and 404 kg, respectively, for sowing on June 25. Thus, the optimum sowing time was June 25 for Hwanggeumkijang and Ibaekchal, and June 10 for Manhongchal and Hwangsilchal.
