(1) The flow data of f (stress) and ${\dot{s}$ (strain rate) for Fe and Ti alloys were plotted in the form of f vs. -ln ${\dot{s}$ by using the literature values. (2) The plot showed two distinct patterns A and B; Pattern A is a straight line with a negative slope, and Pattern B is a curve of concave upward. (3) According to Kim and Ree's generalized theory of plastic deformation, pattern A & B belong to Case 1 and 2, respectively; in Case 1, only one kind of flow units acts in the deformation, and in Case 2, two kinds flow units act, and stress is expressed by $f={X_1f_1}+{X_2f_2}$where $f_1\;and\;f_2$ are the stresses acting on the flow units of kind 1 and 2, respectively, and $X_1,\;X_2$ are the fractions of the surface area occupied by the two kinds of flow units; $f_j=(1/{\alpha}_j) sinh^{-1}\;{\beta}_j{{\dot{s}}\;(j=1\;or\;2)$, where $1/{\alpha}_j\;and\;{\beta}_j$ are proportional to the shear modulus and relaxation time, respectively. (4) We found that grain-boundary flow units only act in the deformation of Fe and Ti alloys whereas dislocation flow units do not show any appreciable contribution. (5) The deformations of Fe and Ti alloys belong generally to pattern A (Case 1) and B (Case 2), respectively. (6) By applying the equations, f=$(1/{\alpha}_{g1}) sinh^-1({\beta}_{g1}{\dot{s}}$) and $f=(X_{g1}/{\alpha}_{g1})sinh^{-1}({\beta}_{g1}{\dot{s}})+ (X_{g2}/{\alpha}_{g2})\;shih^{-1}({\beta}_{g2}{\dot{s}})$ to the flow data of Fe and Ti alloys, the parametric values of $x_{gj}/{\alpha}_{gj}\;and\;{\beta}_{gs}(j=1\;or\;2)$ were determined, here the subscript g signifies a grain-boundary flow unit. (7) From the values of ($({\beta}_gj)^{-1}$) at different temperatures, the activation enthalpy ${\Delta}H_{gj}^{\neq}$ of deformation due to flow unit gj was determined, ($({\beta}_gj)^{-1}$) being proportional to , the jumping frequency (the rate constant) of flow unit gj. The ${\Delta}H_{gj}\;^{\neq}$ agreed very well with ${\Delta}H_{gj}\;^{\neq}$ (self-diff) of the element j whose diffusion in the sample is a critical step for the deformation as proposed by Kim-Ree's theory (Refer to Tables 3 and 4). (8) The fact, ${\Delta}H_{gj}\;^{\neq}={\Delta}H_{j}\;^{\neq}$ (self-diff), justifies the Kim-Ree theory and their method for determining activation enthalpies for deformation. (9) A linear relation between ${\beta}^{-1}$ and carbon content [C] in hot-rolled steel was observed, i.e., In ${\beta}^{-1}$ = -50.2 [C] - 40.3. This equation explains very well the experimental facts observed with regard to the deformation of hot-rolled steel..
The effect of Ni-rich phase on the stress-rupture properties of Ni mlcroalloyed W were studied using direct load creep tester at 100$0^{\circ}C$, 110$0^{\circ}C$, and 120$0^{\circ}C$ in $H_2.$ The stress rupture strength of 100hrs. of W-0.4wt% Ni was 43% higher at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and 35% higher at 110 $0^{\circ}C$than that of W-0.2wt% Ni due to the larger initial grain size, the higher relative density and the higher grain growth during test. That of W-0.8wt% Ni was 90% higher at 100$0^{\circ}C$ and 60% higher at 110$0^{\circ}C$ than that of W-0.2wt% Ni. The activation energy of W-0.4wt% Ni for creep was 81.3 Kcal/mole. It was considered that creep deformation was controlled by the diffusion of W in the Ni rich phase between the grains and the deformation of grains. All of the specimens showed intergranular fracture by grain boundary cavitation and growth of cavity throughout the entire spcimen cross-section.

In this study we investigated the effects of process variables on the bond strength, and its dependency upon the interfacial chemistry when the joined $ZrO_2$ toughened $Na\beta$"-alumina to $\alpha$-alumina using B$_2$$O_3$-$SiO_2$-Al$_2$$O_3$-CaO glass sealant. We observed that bond strength is mainly determined by the strength of the glass, which, in turn, depends on the glass composition established after joining reaction. Joining at $950^{\circ}C$ for 15min yielded the highest average bond strength of 66MPa. Different types of interfacial reaction seem to occur at each interface. After joining at $950^{\circ}C$ for 15min we found that Ca and Si diffuse much deeper(~15$\mu\textrm{m}$) into the $\beta$"-alumina composite than into the $\alpha$-alumina(<1$\mu\textrm{m}$) as a result of ion exchange reaction and more effective grain boundary diffusion. Thermal expansion coefficient of the glass was found to have changed more closely to those of the $\beta$"-alumina composite and $\alpha$-alumina, which put the glass under a slight compressive stress.ressive stress.
The effect of sintering atmosphere on the final properties and phase change of Ti (C, N) Cr3c2 ceramics was investigated. In the case of sintering in vacuum and N2 atmosphere, densely packed sintered body was obtained. In Ar atmosphere, however, densification was much decreased compared to sintering in vacuum and Na. XRD analysis showed that in vacuum atmosphere Cr3c2 phase was changed to Cr7c3 Phase whereas in N2 and Ar atmosphere phase change was not occurred. That is, for vacuum sintering, the formation of defects in Ti(C, N) structure occurred through de-nitridation process, and it promotes the diffusion of C in Cr3c2 and raises the densification effects. But in the case of N2 atmosphere, densification phenomenon was considered to be due to sintering mechanism that enabled formation of free carbon and removal of oxygen by free carbon and existence of carbon in the grain boundary.

During sintering of very porous green bodies, as obtained by compaction of hard powders - such as tungsten carbide or ceramics - or by injection moulding, important shrinkage occurs. Due to heterogeneous green density field, gravity effects, friction on the support, thermal gradients, etc., this shrinkage is often non-uniform, which' may induce significant shape changes. As the ratio of compact dimension to powder size is very high, the mechanics of continuum is relevant to model such phenomena. Thus numerical techniques, such as the finite element method can be used to simulate the sintering process and predict the final shape of the sintered part. Such type of simulation has much been developed in the last decade firstly for hot isostatic pressing and next for die compaction. Finite element modelling has been recently applied to free sintering. The simulation of sintering should be based on constitutive equations describing the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the material under any state of stress and any temperature which may arise within the sintering body. These equations can be drawn either from experimental data or from micromechanical models. The experiments usually consist in free sintering and sinter-forging tests. Indeed applying more complex loading conditions at high temperature under controlled atmosphere is delicate. Micromechanical models describe the constitutive behaviour of aggregates of spheres from the deformation of two-sphere contact either by viscous flow or grain boundary diffusion. Such models are not able to describe complex microstructure and mechanisms as observed in real materials but they can give some basic information on the formulation of constitutive equations. Practically both experimental and theoretical approaches can be coupled to identify the constitutive equations. Such procedure has been performed for modelling the sintering of compacts obtained by die pressing of a mixture of tungsten carbide and cobalt powders. The constitutive behaviour of this material during sintering has been described by a linear viscous constitutive model, whose functions have been fitted from results of free sintering and sinter-forging experiments. This model has next been introduced in ABAQUS finite element code to simulate the sintering of heterogeneous green compacts of various geometries at constant temperature. Examples of simulations are shown and compared with experiments.
Silicide layer structures, agglomeration of silicide layers, and dopant redistributions for the Co/Ti bilayer sputter-deposited on the P-doped polycrystalline Si substrate and subjected to rapid thermal annealing were investigated and compared with those on the single Si substrate. The $CoSi_2$ phase transition temperature is higher and agglomeration of the silicide layer occurs more severely for the Co/Ti bilayer on the doped polycrystalline Si substrate than on the single Si substrate. Also, dopant loss by outdiffusion is much more significant on the doped polycrystalline Si substrate than on the single Si substrate. All of these differences are attributed to the grain boundary diffusion and heavier doping concentration in the polycrystalline Si. The layer structure after silicidation annealing of Co/ Tildoped - polycrystalline Si is polycrystalline CoSi,/polycrystalline Si, while that of Co/TiI( 100) Si is Co- Ti- Si/epi- CoSi,/(lOO) Si.
We have prepared Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films on Si substrate without buffer layer. Deposition was carried out by off-axis rf magnetron sputtering method using Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 stoichiometric target. The substrate temperature was changed from 40$0^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$ during deposition. As the substrate temperature increased, relative intensity of (110) peak increased up to $600^{\circ}C$, however preferred orientation changed from (110) to (h00) beyond $650^{\circ}C$ of substrate temperature. Deposited films showed microstructures with fine grains whose diameters are less than 100 nm, and columnar structure was observed in the cross-sectional SEM micrograph. AES depth profile showed no significant diffusion at the interfacial reaction area. The effective dielectric constant of films showed maximum value at $600^{\circ}C$, and the leakage current increased with increasing substrate temperature, which may be ascribed to the crystallization of amorphous phases at grain boundary.

Corrosion mechanisms by molten steel and slag were investigated in the zirconia/graphite composite as a material of submerged entry nozzle (SEN) using for producing high quality steel. Most of corrosions were started by the dissolution of zirconia particles into molten steel and oxidation of graphite, but subsequently three modes of corrosion were observed. Firstly, the penetration of slag into zirconia matrix was induced to the diffusion of stabilizing agent outward cubic zirconia grains, and the destabilization of cubic to fine monoclinic zirconia particles, which is enhanced to the decomposition and dissolution of them into slag. Secondly, molten slag penetrates into large cubic zirconia particles along grain boundary and decomposed them to fine cubic grains, which is also enhanced to the dissolution of zirconia grains into slag. Lastly, reaction between carbon and cubic zirconia was formed porous ZrC and enhanced the dissolution of it into slag.
A study was made to examine the characteristics of base metal and stress relief cracking(SRC) of heat affected zone(HAZ) for HY-100 and Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steels. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the SRC/HAZ. The details of mechanical properties of base plate and SRC tested specimens were studied. The specimens were aged at $650^{\circ}C$ for HSLA-100 steel and at 66$0^{\circ}C$ for HY-100 steel and thermal cycled from 135$0^{\circ}C$ In $25^{\circ}C$ with a cooling time of $\Delta$$t_{800^{\circ}50}$$0^{\circ}C$/=21sec. corresponds to the heat input of 30kJ/cm. The thermal cycled specimens were stressed to a predetermined level of 248~600MPa and then reheated to the stress relief temperatures of 570~62$0^{\circ}C$. The time to failure( $t_{f}$) at a given stress level was used as a measure of SRC susceptibility. The strength, elongation and impact toughness of base plate were greater in HSLA-100 steel than in HY-100 steel. The time to failure was decreased with increasing temperature and/or stress. HSLA-100 steel was more susceptible to stress relief cracking than HY-100 steel under same conditions. It is thought to be resulted from the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase by dynamic self diffusion of solute atoms. Therefore, greater strain concentration at grain boundary of HSLA-100 steel results in the increased SRC susceptibility.y.
