  • The grain growth is very important because of its great influence on the various materials properties. Therefore, in this study, the effects of anisotropic grain boundary energy on grain growth in 2-D have been investigated with a large scale phase field simulation model on PC. A $2000{\times}2000$ grid system and the initial number of grains of about 73,000 were used in the computer simulation. The anisotropic ratio of grain boundary energy, ${\sigma}_{max}/{\sigma}_{min}$, has been varied from 1 to 3. As the anisotropy increased, the grain growth exponent, n, increased from 2.05 to 2.37. The grain size distribution showed a central plateau in the isotropic case, and was changed into no central plateau and the increasing population of very small grains in the anisotropic case, resulting from slowly disappearing grains. Finally, simulated microstructures were compared according to anisotropy.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the change in compressive strength, freacture behavior and degradation of piezoelectric properties with compressive cyclic loading in Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 of tetragonal, morphotropic phase boundary and rhombohedral composition. The highest compressive strength was found in rhombohedral composition. After poling treatment the strength increased by 8.4% and 6.5% in tetragonal and morphotropic phase boundary compositions respectively while changed little in rhombohedral. The increase of compressive strength after poling treatment is believed to be due to the internal stress around grain boundary by domain alginment toward electric field direction in the microstructures having tetragonality and the occurrence of domain switching to the direction perpendicular to electrical field during fracture. Fracture mode relatively change from transgranular to intergranular was observed in the large grain sized tetragonal and morphotropic phase boundary compositions before and after poling but the transgranular fracture mode always remained in the rhombohedral composition. From the X-ray diffractometer analysis the domains parallel to the electric field direction is known to undergo rearrangement during the cyclic loading into random direction that is responsible for the degradation of piezoelectric property.

  • Microstructures and dielectric properties of (Sr$\_$1-x/Ca$\_$x/) TiO$_3$-0.006Nb$_2$O$\_$5/ (0.05$\leq$x$\leq$0.2) boundary layer ceramics were investigated. The samples fired in a reducing atmosphere(N$_2$) were painted on the surface with CuO paste for the subsequent grain boundary diffusion, and then annealed at 1100$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The metal oxide of CuO infiltrated by thermal diffusion from surface of sample presents continuously in not grain but only grain boundary, and makes up thin boundary phase. The SEM photo, and EDAX revealed that CuO was penetrated rapidly into the bulk along the grain boundaries during the annealing. The average grain sizes is continuously increased as the content of substitutional Ca is increased from 5[mol%] to 15[mol%], but the average grain size of the sample with content of 20[mol%] Ca is slightly decreased. In the samples with content of 10∼15[mol%] Ca, excellent dielectric properties were obtained as follows; dielectric constant <25000, dielectric loss <0.3[%], and capacitance change rate as a function of temperature <${\pm}$10[%], respectively. All samples in this study exhibited dielectric relaxation with frequency as a functior of the temperature.

  • The microstructure and magnetic properties of HDDR-treated powders after grain boundary diffusion process (GBDP) with Nd-Cu alloy at different temperatures have been studied. The variation of GBDP temperature had multifaceted influences on the HDDR-treated powders involving the microstructure, phase composition and magnetic performance. An enhanced coercivity of 16.9 kOe was obtained after GBDP at $700^{\circ}C$, due to the modified grain boundary with fine and continuous Nd-rich phase. However, GBDP at lower or higher temperature resulted in poor magnetic properties because of insufficient microstructural modification. Especially, the residual hydrogen induced phenomenon during GBDP strongly depended on the GBDP temperature.

  • In this study, a deformation mechanism map of metallic nanocrystalline materials(NCMs) using the phase mixture model is proposed. It is based on recent modeling that appears to provide a conclusive description of the phenomenology and the mechanisms underlying the mechanical properties of NCMs. The proposed models adopted the concept of a 'phase mixture' in which the grain interior and the grain boundaries are treated as separate phases. The volume fraction of this grain boundary 'phase' may be quite appreciable in a NCM. Based on the theoretical model that provides an adequate description of the grain size dependence of plasticity covering all grain size range from coarse down to the nanoscale, the tensile deformation response of NCMs, especially focusing on the deformation mechanisms was investigated. The deformation mechanism map is newly proposed with axes of strain rate, grain size and temperature.

  • The high temperature deformation behavior of two-phase gamma TiAl alloy has been investigated with the variation of temperature and ${\gamma}/{\alpha}_2$ volume fraction. For this purpose, a series of load relaxation tests and tensile tests have been conducted at temperature ranging from 800 to $1050^{\circ}C$. In the early stage of the deformation as in the load relaxation test experimental flow curves of the fine-grained TiAl alloy are well fitted with the combined curves of two processes (grain matrix deformation and dislocation climb) in the inelastic deformation theory. The evidence of grain boundary sliding has not been observed at this stage. However, when the amount of deformation is large (${\epsilon}{\approx}$ 0.8), flow curves significantly changes its shape indicating that grain boundary sliding also operates at this stage, which has been attributed to the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization during the deformation. With the increase in the volume fraction of ${\alpha}_2$-phase, the flow stress for grain matrix deformation increases since ${\alpha}_2$-Phase is considered as hard phase acting as barrier for dislocation movement. It is considered that cavity initiation is more probable to occur at ${\alpha}_2/{\gamma}$ interface rather than at ${\gamma}/{\gamma}$ interface.

  • Liquid phases in ZnO varistors cause more complex phase development and microstructure, which makes the control of electrical properties and reliability more difficult. Therefore, we have investigated 2 mol% $CaCO_3$ doped $ZnO-Co_3O_4-Cr_2O_3-La_2O_3$ (ZCCLCa) bulk ceramics as one of the compositions without liquid phase sintering additive. The results were as follows: when $CaCO_3$ is added to ZCCLCa ($644{\Omega}cm$) acting as a simple ohmic resistor, CaO does not form a secondary phase with ZnO but is mostly distributed in the grain boundary and has excellent varistor characteristics (high nonlinear coefficient ${\alpha}=78$, low leakage current of $0.06{\mu}A/cm^2$, and high insulation resistance of $1{\times}10^{11}{\Omega}cm$). The main defects $Zn_i^{{\cdot}{\cdot}}$ (AS: 0.16 eV, IS & MS: 0.20 eV) and $V_o^{\bullet}$ (AS: 0.29 eV, IS & MS: 0.37 eV) were found, and the grain boundaries had 1.1 eV with electrically single grain boundary. The resistance of each defect and grain boundary decreases exponentially with increasing the measurement temperature. However, the capacitance (0.2 nF) of the grain boundary was ~1/10 lower than that of the two defects (~3.8 nF, ~2.2 nF) and showed a tendency to decrease as the measurement temperature increased. Therefore, ZCCLCa varistors have high sintering temperature of $1,200^{\circ}C$ due to lack of liquid phase additives, but excellent varistor characteristics are exhibited, which means ZCCLCa is a good candidate for realizing chip type or disc type commercial varistor products with excellent performance.

  • The anatase particle was facetted at the free surface and a neck formation between the anatase particles prior to the phase transformation occured. This resulted in the severe lattice distortion at the region of the interface near the neck and this can act as the nucleation sites for the phase transformation. The grain growth of rutile particles after the phase transformation grew very fast by the sweeping phenomena of grain boundary. Therfore, It leaded to the microstructure without the rutile phase located in anatase particle.

  • The effect of base metal grain size on isothermal solidification behavior of Ni-base superalloy, CMSX-2 during transient liquid phase (TLP) bonding was investigated employing MBF-80 insert metal. TLP-bonding of single crystal. coarse-grained and fine-grained CMSX-2 was carried out at 1373∼1548k for various holding time in vacuum. The eutectic width diminished linearly with the square root of holding time during isothermal solidification process for single crystal, coarse-grained and fine-grained base metals. The completion time for isothermal solidification decreased in the order ; single crystal, coarse-grained and fine-grained base metals. The difference of isothermal solidification rates produced when bonding the different base metals could be explained quantitatively by the effect of base metal grain boundaries on the apparent average diffusion coefficient of boron in CMSX-2.

  • In this paper, the effect of grain refinement on room temperature ductility of copper was addressed. Recent experimental results have shown that this material, as well as a number of other single-phase metals that are ductile when coarse-grained, loose their ductility with decreasing grain size in the sub micrometer range. A recently developed model in which such materials are considered as effectively two-phase ones (with the grain boundaries treated as a linearly viscous second phase) was applied to analyze stability of Cu against ductile necking. As a basis, Hart's stability analysis that accounts for strain rate sensitivity effects was used. The results confirm the observed trend for reduction of ductility with decreasing grain size. The model can be applied to predicting the grain size dependence of ductility of other metallic materials as well.
