  • A series of experiments were conducted from 1968 to 1970 to find the transmission effects of the dwarf disease of mulberry tree in connection with inlay grafting and insect vector with the following conclusions: 1. The inlay-grafting of sound scions on diseased roots showed a 30 per cent transmission rate among the successful grafts. The inlay-grafting of diseased scions on sound roots showed a 14 per cent transmission rate among the successful grafts ir the case of scions cut and stored before wintering but no transmission effect in the case of scions prepared after wintering, There were some stocks, among the unsuccesful grasfts of diseased scions upon sound roots, that sprouted out new buds, no transmission effects were found in them, 2. Leafhoppers (Hishimonus disciguttus Walker) collected from areas with no dwarf disease infection were grouped into three plots and let to feed on mulberry tree severely infected by dwarf disease for 7 days, 14 days and 21 days respectively. After these preliminary treatment, the leafhoppers were recollected to be fed on the sound seedling divided into three plots for 10 days, 15 days and 20 days respectively to find the transmission effects. The results are that the 7 day plot showed no transmission effect whereas the 14 day plot showed a 22 per cent disease rate and the 21 day plot 61 per cent rate indicating that the longer the feeding period is the higher the transmission rate.

  • Fabric ion-exchanger, aminated PP-g-styrene was synthesized with styrene monomer onto PP staple fiber by pre-irradiational grafting with E-beam and subsequent chloromethylation and amination. Degree of grafting was increased with increasing the styrene monomer concentration and the highest degree of grafting was obtained 118% at a monomer concentration of 80% styrene. Optimum condition of Mohr's salt and sulphuric acid were 1.0 ${\times}\;10^{-3}$ M and 0.1 M. Amount of amination was increased with increasing degree of grafting. Swelling ratio of aminated PP-g styrene was higher than that of trunk polymer. Ion-exchange capacity was 6.7 meq/g, which was three times greater than commercial ion-exchanger. Optimum condition of baron ion adsorption was pH 4 and amount of adsorption were increased with increasing the amount of amination.

  • In this study, several poly(styrene-co-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate)-grafted ETFE films were prepared by a simultaneous irradiation grafting method. After mixing of styrene/(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate(TMSPM) monomers with various solvents, the effects of various irradiation conditions such as total dose, dose rate and monomer concentration on the degree of grafting of the prepared membranes were investigated. Results indicated that the higher degree of grafting was obtained when acetone was used as a solvent. The formation of poly(styrene-co-TMSPM) grafts on the ETFE films was verified using FTIR spectrometry and the distribution of the poly(PTMSPM) graft polymer over the cross-section of the grafted film was confirmed using SEM-EDX instrument.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the stability of arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) peptide coatings on implants by measuring the amount of peptide remaining after installation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Fluorescent isothiocyanate (FITC)-fixed RGD peptide was coated onto anodized titanium implants (width 4 mm, length 10 mm) using a physical adsorption method (P) or a chemical grafting method (C). Solid Rigid Polyurethane Foam (SRPF) was classified as either hard bone (H) or soft bone (S) according to its density. Two pieces of artificial bone were fixed in a customized jig, and coated implants were installed at the center of the boundary between two pieces of artificial bone. The test groups were classified as: P-H, P-S, C-H, or C-S. After each installation, implants were removed from the SRPF, and the residual amounts and rates of RGD peptide in implants were measured by fluorescence spectrometry. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used for the statistical analysis (${\alpha}$=0.05). RESULTS. Peptide-coating was identified by fluorescence microscopy and XPS. Total coating amount was higher for physical adsorption than chemical grafting. The residual rate of peptide was significantly larger in the P-S group than in the other three groups (P<.05). CONCLUSION. The result of this study suggests that coating doses depend on coating method. Residual amounts of RGD peptide were greater for the physical adsorption method than the chemical grafting method.

  • The surface of polyethylene (PE) was modified through Ar atmospheric pressure plasma treatment and subsequent grafting of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). Optimum plasma treatment conditions were determined through analyzing the surface free energies calculated from the contact angles between PE samples and three probe liquids, which were RF-power of 200 W, plasma treatment time of 600 sec, Ar flow rate of 5 LPM, and sample-holder moving speed of 20 mm/sec. To introduce the maximum amount of GMA on PE surface treated under the conditions, graft copolymerization conditions such as GMA concentration, temperature, and time were carefully controlled. Grafting degree (GD) was obtained through weight difference analysis of PE film before and after graft copolymerization. A maximum GD was achieved at the GMA concentration of 20 vol%, the temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, and the treatment time of 4 hr.

  • This study was carried out to develop new varieties with early maturing and large fruit size in the Korean native dogwood (Cornus kousa) for woody landscape plants from native sites or cultivated area. The results are obtained as follows; We selected strains with early maturing and large fruit. size from the habitats from 2000 to 2003. ‘SKK 2-1’ had 4.0cm of fruit size while 2.0 cm of native variety. In addition, ‘SKK 2-2’, ‘SKK 2-3’, ‘SKK 2-4’, and ‘SKK 2-5’ with large fruit and early maturing were preliminary selected from the habitats. In the preliminary selections, ‘SKK 2-1’ was finally selected as new early maturing variety with large fruits in 2003. New early maturing variety with large fruit size, C. kousa var. ‘SKK 2-1’ was selected from 200 plants of 5-year-old seedlings in C. kousa in 5-12 Nung wean ri Goo sung myun Yong In, Kyung gi do, Korea in 2000. Their fruits were colorized in September 18, 20∼25 days earlier than October 7 of native varieties. Its fruit diameter is larger than 4cm. Its fruit weight was 5 times as heavy as native cultivars grown in Korea. This useful characters were still inherited after grafting. However, characteristics of growth, leaf, flower, and flowering period were not different from those of native varieties. Therefore, it was very promising landscape woody plant, having large fruits in early fall season. The rooting rate of Korean dogwood was high by the IBA treatment. The optimum date for softwood cutting was on June 25 ∼ July 25 when the rooting rate was more than 80%. In addition. Korean dogwood was easily propagated by grafting. Therefore, new early maturing variety with large fruits, C. kousa var. ‘SKK 2-1’ is easily propagated by softwood cutting or grafting and then is a promising cultivar as a woody landscape plant.

  • Background The free anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap has been widely used for various kinds of reconstructions. However, delayed healing at the donor site occasionally occurs due to wound dehiscence or the partial loss of grafted skin at the donor site. The aim of the present study was to identify reliable predictive factors for delayed healing at the donor site after the harvest of a free ALT flap. Methods This study included 52 patients who underwent reconstructive procedures using free ALT flaps. The delayed healing group included patients with wounds at the donor site that had not healed over 3 weeks after surgery, and the normal healing group included patients who showed wound healing within 3 weeks after surgery. Multivariate logistic regression models were created to identify the risk factors for delayed healing at the ALT flap donor site. Results Among the 52 patients, 24 (46.2%) showed delayed healing at the donor site, and 6 patients required additional operative treatment. A high preoperative body mass index (BMI), smoking, and skin grafting were found to be significantly associated with delayed healing at the ALT donor site. Of the 37 patients who underwent skin grafting, 23 (62%) experienced delayed healing at the donor site. Conclusions A high preoperative BMI, smoking, and skin grafting were risk factors for delayed healing at the free ALT donor site. Skin grafting at the ALT donor site should be avoided in patients with a high BMI or a habit of smoking.

  • Mulberry grafting season in normally a one month period starting at the end of March. Such a short period creates a shortage of qualified grafters and inflates wages. Pine tree sawdust was tested as a medium in which to preserve graftages. Sawdust was moistened to two ratios of water to dry weight of sawdust (1.5 and 2.0). Scions were either grafted the same day they were collected or first incubated for 10days at 15$^{\circ}C$. Grafting period could be extended to the middle of February under 1.5 times moisture content and fresh scions. Preservation of scions increased water content, T-N, P2O5, CaO and inositol, whereas decreased total C, glucose and fructose. With no preservation total C decreased, inositol increased slightly early March followed sharp decrease, and sucrose increased with time.
