  • The radical initiated graft copolymerization of acrylonitrile(AN) and 4-chlorostyrene(4-Clst) onto ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM) rubber was investigated under various conditions. Graft copolymer(AU-EPDM-4-Clst) was isolated b: selective solvent extraction and identified by using IR spectroscopy. The percent grafting is determined as a function of solvent, reaction time, and monomer mole ratio. Percent grafting decreased in the order of tetrahydrofuran(THF)>THF/ethyl acetate(EA)(1 : 1)>cyclohexane/EA(1 : 1)>n-hexane/EA(1 : 1). Grafting increased continuously with increasing the reaction time up to 40 hr, beyond which the grafting levelled off. It was observed that percent grafting increased as increasing [4-Clst]/[AN] mole ratio, but decreased when [4-Clst]/[AN] mole ratio was higher than 1.60. The light resistance of graft copolymer(AN-EPDM-4-Clst) was better than that of ABS.

  • Cerium (IV) ion-initiated graft copolymerizations of acrylonitrile to raw silk were investigated in an effort to carry out sericine-fixation. The change in ceric ammonium nitrate concentration exhibited a maximum in percentage of grafting at 0.003M. Also observed was that the change in nitric acid content in reaction media gave a maximum in percentage of grafting at 0.1M. Percentage of grafting was increased generally with increase in acrylonitrile concentration, reaction time and reaction temperature. Raw silk sericin grafted with acrylonitrile was not de gummed by boiling off test and optimum graft percentage was considered at 20%.

  • The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and acrylamide (AAm) onto oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber were successfully carried out in aqueous solution using $H_{2}O_{2}/Fe^{2+}$ as initiator. For all monomers the percentage of grafting increases with the amount of monomer and can be controlled by setting the appropriate reaction conditions. The optimum reaction period were found to be 120 minutes for all monomers whereas the optimum temperature and the amount of initiator needed for grafting depend on the type of the monomer used. The mechanisms of grafting vinyl monomer onto OPEFB were proposed. The grafted products were characterized by gravimetric analysis, FTIR and SEM.

  • In this study, p-acryloyloxybenzoic acid(ABA) was synthesized with p-hydroxybenzoic acid(HBA) and acryloyl chloride(AC). The synthesized ABA monomer was grafted onto ethylene-propylene-diene rubber(EPDM) in toluene using benzoyl peroxide(BPO) as an initiator. The structures of ABA and EPDM-g-ABA were characterized by FT-IR, $^1H$-NMR, and $^{13}C$-NMR spectrometer. The graft ratio of EPDM-g-ABA increased with increasing the concentration of the initiator and the monomer. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and compression set of the EPDM-g-ABA were improved with increasing the graft ratio. The $T_g$ and initial decomposition temperature were also increased with increasing the graft ratio.
