  • Using an unobserved components model that features trend growth as a random walk, we find that GDP trend growth rates had gradually declined from the late 1980s to early 2010s in Korea. To uncover the underlying features of the slowdown, we use trend growth accounting. A major feature appears to be a significant decline in the growth rate of labor productivity. To be specific, the first gradual decline in trend growth, which started in 1988 and continued to 1998, is associated with a drop in TFP measured in labor-augmenting units. This finding is inconsistent with the hypothesis that the slowdown in GDP trend growth can be attributed to the 1997-1998 Korean financial crisis. Sluggish investment growth is behind the second period of the gradual slowdown, from 2002 to 2012.

  • The number of patients with cardiovascular diseases who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are increasing among young adults as well as the aged population. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is vital in improving survival rates of OHCA victims. Survival rates of OHCA were shown to decline exponentially in time to defibrillation, yet studies in Korea are uncommon that captures the properties of their survival rates in examining optimal locations of AEDs. In this study, we worked on the maximal gradual coverage location problem (MGCLP) with exponential decay coverage function to decide on their optimal locations. The exponential decay coverage function mitigates the drawback of over-estimating survival rates of OHCA patients. It is expected that a more sophisticated facility location problem will be developed to identify the "emergent" characteristics of pedestrians who responds to the OHCA occurrence by incorporating random pedestrian locations and movement through simulation.

  • Studies were carried out on the factors responsible for the change of pungency in 'Kagdugi'. During fermentation, the pH in 'Kagdugi' decreased to around to 4, while acidity increased continuously. In accordance with the decrease of pungency, the content of 4-methylthio-3-butenyl isothiocyanate (MTB-NCS) in the homogenate of 'Kagdugi' decreased gradually and on 3rd day, the optimum period for good flavor, below 5% of that in the homogenate of fresh radish. The decrease of MTB-NCS formation was accompanied by the gradual loss of 4-methylthio-3-butenyl glucosinolate (MTB-glucosinolate), which was found to disappear more rapidly than total glucosinolate. Also, the ascorbic acid-dependent myrosinase activity was observed to decline gradually with the fermentation time, although the ascorbic acid content varied above the concentration required for maximal enzyme activity. Thus, it was suggested that the decline of MTB-NCS may be related to the gradual losses of MTB-glucosinolate content and myrosinase activity which are both susceptible to the effect of acidic pH.

  • The study on the change of general properties of Kagdugi during dfermentation reveals that around the third day of fermentation, optimum for good flavor, the pH decreased to around or below 4 while the acidity increased gradually. The relative amount of thiocyanate in the radish Kimchi homogenate decreased to 73% after 1 day and after 3 days to 32% of control. And the content of indolylmethyl glucosinolate and total myrosinase activity in the tissue of radish Kimchi decreased gradually and on 3rd day to 25% and 4% of control, respectively. On the other hand the concentration of ascorbic acid in the radish Kimchi was found to vary around 1mM. Based on these results, the gradual decline of thiocyanate formation in the radish Kimchi homogenate is concluded to be caused by the gradual decomposition of indolylmethyl glucosinolate and the decline of myrosinase activity, which are directly affected by the change of pH during fermentation.

  • Objective: This study was performed to report on the effects of traditional Korean Medicine as a treatment for a patient with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, with lower limb pain as the chief complaint. Methods: We treated this patient with traditional Korean medicine and measured symptom severity using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) as well as measuring the length of the patient's self-exercising time. Results: After about 7 weeks of treatment, most pathological symptoms had decreased. There was a gradual decline in the VAS and a gradual increase in the length of the self-exercising time. Although there was an increase in the ODI scale during the first 2 weeks, it eventually showed a decline in the rest of the period. Conclusions: Traditional Korean medicine can be a solution for the patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease suffering from peripheral neurological symptoms.

  • To make clear the changes of the amount of reserve substances in the bark of stem and root of mulberry graftages after planting, studies were carried with mulberry graftages classified into three groups of 7.0-7.9mm, 9.0-9.9mm and 11.0-11.9mm in diameter of stems at 3cm above their base. The results obtained were as follow : 1. The dry weight of stem and root bark gradually decreased with growth of new shoots till about five weeks after planting, and from then it increased. 2. The duration of new shoots growth depending on the reserve substance was limited for 6-7 weeks after planting. In no fertilized group, the length of new shoots increased up to 6-7 weeks, form then decrease. 3. Dry leaf yield three weeks after planting was found to be no difference in the same diameter of saplings between with and without fertilization. 4. The content of chlorophyll in the leaves was higher in thicker group and in fertilized group than thinner and no fertilized one, respectively. 5. There was no difference in the amount of carbohydrates of the bark of stem and root among the stem diameters. There was a transient increase in the amount of total sugar in the bark of stem and root in the first three weeks after planting, followed by gradual decline up to five weeks. The amount of reducing sugar in the bark of stem and root increased both in fertilized and in no fertilized group up to three weeks after planting, and then it decreased. There was a gradual decline in the content of starch in the bark of stem and root both in fertilized and in no fertilized group up to five weeks after planting, followed by gradual increase.

  • There are an increasing number of healthcare facilaties, especially branch offices, in rural areas to serve the aging population living there. However, there has been a gradual decline in the ratios of recognition, satisfaction and utilization by people who live in the regions. A significant reason of declining the ratios should be the population decline, but the most of population hierarchy shows the groups of elderly people over 60. This result appears to be limited to visit the public health centers. According to the result of population hierarchy, a branch office of public health center has been re-established as a complex welfare facility which can be fulfilled in the functions of basic medical supports and cultural supports. This research is focused on collecting the meaningful information of the status of physical facilities and utilization with 15branch offices of public health care centers in the rural regions near the city of Ik-San city. In addition, this research has a purpose of getting fundamental data for future architectural plans of the branch offices in rural regions with the results about the status of facility operation systems and users' needs.

  • We present a model, combining servitization decision and a conventional two-sided market approaches, to understand expected outcomes and current market situations. We suppose an individual manufacturer participates in multiple platforms and decides whether to initiate servitization by considering latent profitability and risk. The analytical results from the model show that increasing competition within servitized companies lead to a servitization equilibrium, wherein the ratio of servitized companies in a market is stable, due to a gradual decline in relative benefits compared to non-servitized companies. This holds even in the case that the number of customer is increasing along the diffusion of servitization, under some restricted conditions.

  • The progression of curing of dementia is associated with a gradual decline in functional, cognitive, emotional and social abilities. Patients with dementia currently cause many social problems, which will become more serious in the near future. It is considered that patients with dementia are so much influenced by the quality of physical ward environment ; so we need to improve environment of dementia ward dept. Factors of physical environment which effect patients with dement1a can be classifided both into 'Interier design' ; material, color, lighting, equipment and auxiliary design and into 'Sense of sight & hearing' ; illumination, ornament & indication, noise, and fancy.
