  • In this paper, we propose a medical image registration technique combining the gradient vector flow and modified conditional entropy. The registration is conducted by the use of a measure based on the entropy of conditional probabilities. To achieve the registration, we first define a modified conditional entropy (MCE) computed from the joint histograms for the area intensities of two given images. In order to combine the spatial information into a traditional registration measure, we use the gradient vector flow field. Then the MCE is computed from the gradient vector flow intensity (GVFI) combining the gradient information and their intensity values of original images. To evaluate the performance of the proposed registration method, we conduct experiments with our method as well as existing method based on the mutual information (MI) criteria. We evaluate the precision of MI- and MCE-based measurements by comparing the registration obtained from MR images and transformed CT images. The experimental results show that the proposed method is faster and more accurate than other optimization methods.

  • In this paper, forced vibration of micro cylindrical shell reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes (FG-CNTs) is presented. The structure is subjected to transverse harmonic load and modeled by beam model. The size effects are considered based on strain gradient theory containing three small scale parameters. The mixture rule is used for obtaining the effective material properties of the structure. Based on sinusoidal shear deformation theory of beam, energy method and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Applying differential quadrature method (DQM) and Newmark method, the frequency curves of the structure are plotted. The effect of different parameters including, CNTs volume percent and distribution type, boundary conditions, size effect and length to thickness ratio on the frequency curves of the structure is studied. Numerical results indicate that the dynamic deflection of the FGX-CNT-reinforced cylindrical is lower with respect to other type of CNT distribution.

  • The adjustment of lens magnification can make the degree of precision in pattern measurement be improved, but several problems such as high cost, smaller field of view and stage error accumulation are followed. In this paper, a method for precisely measuring patterns is proposed based on gradient transition vector, in order to solve these problems. The performance of our method is evaluated using pattern images with several directions. Also, it is compared with previous methods based on edge and gray-level moment. It is judged that the proposed method outperforms consistent pattern width results, and so could be applied to automation processes for measurement and inspection of precise and complexed patterns in IT, BT industry products.

  • We propose a novel framework for markerless camera-based games. By using a visual camera, our method may yield robust human body segmentation with high performance comparable to the segmentation using depth cameras. The edges of human bodies are detected by subtracting gradient backgrounds, and human body regions are segmented by the operations based on mathematical morphology. Collisions between detected regions and virtual objects are determined by finding the colliding time using intra-frame positions of virtual objects. Experimental results show that the proposed method may produce robust segmentation of human bodies, thereby and the collision responses are more accurate than previous methods. Therefore, the proposed framework can be widely used in camera-based games requiring high performance.

  • The main goal of this article is to develop the finite element formulation based on the nonlocal strain gradient and the refined higher-order deformation theory employing a new function f(z) to investigate the static bending and free vibration of functionally graded porous (FGP) nanobeams. The proposed model considers the simultaneous effects of two parameters: nonlocal and strain gradient coefficients. The nanobeam is made by FGP material that exists in un-even and logarithmic-uneven distribution. The governing equation of the nanobeam is established based on Hamilton's principle. The authors use a 2-node beam element, each node with 8 degrees of freedom (DOFs) approximated by the C1 and C2 continuous Hermit functions to obtain the elemental stiffness matrix and mass matrix. The accuracy of the proposed model is tested by comparison with the results of reputable published works. From here, the influences of the parameters: nonlocal elasticity, strain gradient, porosity, and boundary conditions are studied.

  • This paper proposes a color-based image retrieval method using color adjacency and gradient. In proposed method, both the adjacency of different colors and gradient of a color in homogeneous region are considered as features of an image. The gradient, defined as the maximum distance along the direction with largest change of color, is computed for each pixel to determine whether the center color is similar or different to the neighboring colors. Therefore the problems caused by uniform quantization, which is popularly used at most existing retrieval, can be avoided. And furthermore, the storage of the feature is reduced by the proposed binary representation.

  • A Galerkin meshfree method is presented for analyzing shear deformable cylindrical panels. Based upon the analogy between the cylindrical panel and the curved beam a pure bending mode for cylindrical panel is rationally constructed. The meshfree approximation employed herein is characterized by an enhanced moving least square or reproducing kernel basis function that can exactly represent the pure bending mode and thus meets the requirement of Kirchhoff mode reproducing condition. The variational form is discretized using the efficient stabilized conforming nodal integration with a smoothed nodal gradient based curvature. The resulting meshfree formulation satisfies the integration constraint for bending exactness. Moreover, it is shown here that the smoothed gradient preserves several desired properties which are valid for the standard gradient obtained by direct differentiation, such as partition of nullity and reproduction of a constant strain field. The efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated by two benchmark cylindrical panel examples.

  • Some animals have special sensing functions in order to find foods, home and mates. Instead of passively sensing, they discharge signals and then extract necessary information from the response. More importantly, they utilize the gradients of the sensed signal in order to find the destination or objects. In this paper this special strategy is formulated mathematically, i.e., the perturbation and the correlation based gradient estimation is developed. A stereo sensor system using temperature sensors mounted on motors is developed for verification. The proposed method can estimate the gradient of the measured value accurately. Using this method, the direction in the maximum measured value can be estimated accurately, and the position of the heat source can be estimated from the intersection of the directions estimated from both sensors.

  • An accurate and efficient gradient estimation method on unstructured grid is presented by proposing a switching process between two Least-Square methods. Diverse test cases show that the gradient estimation by Least-Square methods exhibit better characteristics compared to Green-Gauss approach. Based on the investigation, switching between the two Least-Square methods, whose merit complements each other, is pursued. The condition number of the Least-Square matrix is adopted as the switching criterion, because it shows clear correlation with the gradient error, and it can be easily calculated from the geometric information of the grid. To illustrate switching process on general grid, condition number is analyzed using stencil vectors and trigonometric relations. Then, the threshold of switching criterion is established. Finally, the capability of Switching Weighted Least-Square method is demonstrated through various two- and three-dimensional applications.

  • Thanks to the multimedia technology development, it is possible to show image representations in high quality and to process images in various ways. Anisotropic diffusion as an effective diffusion filtering among many image preprocessing methods and postprocessing methods is used in reduction of speckle noises of ultrasound images, image restoration, edge detection, and image segmentation. However, the conventional anisotropic diffusion based on a cross-kernel causes the following problems. The problem is the concentration of edges in the vertical or horizontal directions. In this paper, a new anisotropic diffusion transform based on directions of gradient is proposed. The proposed method uses the eight directional square-kernel which is an expanded form of the cross-kernel. The proposed method is to select directions of small gradient based on square-kernel. Therefore, the range of proposed diffusion is selected adaptively according to the number of the directions of gradient. Experimental results show that the proposed method can decrease the concentration of edges in the vertical or horizontal directions, remove impulse noise. The image in high quality can be obtained as a result of the proposed method.
