  • A sequence of functions are examined for the gradient-index AR thin film between two dielectric media and are used as the starting profiles in optimization to improve AR performance. Sinusoidal functions were quite efficient to use as components of the index change in the optimization. It is shown that there exist a number of gradient-index profiles which exhibit excellent AR-performance after control of the gradient-index profiles.

  • This paper proposes a method to detect the misfired cylinder using a new misfire detection index. The new method of misfired cylinder is a comparison of pressure gradient during the blowdown period of exhaust stroke. If a misfire occurs, the engine will he lost some power and consumes the more fuel and the torque will be unsteady. Most of all, the misfire affects a bad influence of the 3-way catalyst and emits unburned hydrocarbon in the air. To prevent these unusual phenomena and eliminate the factor of the environmental pollution, it is important to detect the misfired cylinder. To do the experiment, set up the assist device on the manifold. This assist device is not deformed for conventional exhaust manifold and installed in the end of the exhaust manifold. Experimental results showed that the method using the mean gradient pressure index is proven to be effective in the detection of misfired cylinder on gasoline engine regardless loads and revolutions of the engine.

  • These experiments were carried out to develop new techniques for in vitro separation of x-and Y-bearing spermatozoa. The results obtained in these experiments were summarized as follows: 1. Following centrifugation of discontinuous percoll density gradient, populatin of spermatozoa increased progressively from low to high density. The highest concentration of spermatozoa was observed at the 4th fraction which included 36.6% of spermatozoa. 2. As increasing percoll concentration, the higher motility index was obtained and the highest motility index(74.2) was obtained at the 5th fraction. 3. The percentage of B-body bearing spermatozoa following percoll density gradient centrifugation was decreased from 39.7% to 25.6%. 4. The sperm population following chromatography by sephadex gel and percoll density gradient centrifugation was decreased in 1st, 5th and 6th fractions but the reverse was turn for 2nd, 3rd and 7th fractions, and the highest sperm concentration was observed at the 7th fraction which included 37.4% of spermatozoa. 5. Motility index of spermatozoa was increased from 77.6 to 79.4 after the sephadex gel filtration, however it was decreased at all fractions after percoll density gradient centrifugation. The lowest motility index(33.2) was obtained from the 7th fraction. 6. The rate of B-body bearing spermatozoa was shown the trend to decrease by the sephadex gel filtration and the trend was accelerated by the percoll density gradient centrifugation. The lowest percentage of B-body bearing spermatozoa, 12.0% was obtained from the 5th fraction.

  • The central goal of Gamma Knife radiosurgery(GKRS) is to maximize the conformity of the prescription isodose surface, and to minimize the radiation effect of the normal tissue surrounding the target volume. There are the various kinds of indices related with the quality of treatment plans such as conformity index, coverage, selectivity, beam-on time, gradient index(GI), and conformity/gradient index(CGI). As the best treatment plan evaluation tool, we must check by all means conformity index, GI, and CGI among them. Specially, GI and CGI related with complication of healthy normal tissue is more indispensible than conformity index. Then author calculated and statistically analysed CGI, the newly defined conformity/gradient index as well as GI being applied widely using the treatment planning system Leksell GammaPlan(LGP) and the verification method Variable Ellipsoid Modeling Technique(VEMT). In the study 10 patients with intracranial lesion treated by GKRS were included. Author computed the indices from LGP and VEMT requiring only four parameters: the prescribed isodose volume, the volume with dose > 30%, the target volume, and the volume of half the prescription isodose. All data were analyzed by paired t-test, which is statistical method used to compare two different measurement techniques. No statistical significance in GI at 10 cases was observed between LGP and VEMT. Differences in GI ranged from -0.14 to 0.01. The newly defined gradient index calculated by two methods LGP and VEMT was not statistically significant either. Author did not find out the statistical difference for the prescribed isodose volume between LGP and VEMT. CGI as the evaluation index for determining the best treatment plan is not significant statistically also. Differences in CGI ranged from -4 to 3. Similarly newly defined Conformity/Gradient index for GKRS was also estimated as the metric for the evaluation of the treatment plans through statistical analysis. Statistical analyses demonstrated that VEMT was in excellent agreement with LGP when considering GI, new gradient index, CGI, and new CGI for evaluating the best plans of GKRS. Due to the application of the fast and easy evaluation tool through LGP and VEMT author hopes CGI and newly defined CGI as well as gradient indices will be widely used.

  • A gradient-index (GRIN) substrate is proposed as a novel signal propagation medium of planar optics. The GRIN substrate provides planar-optics designers not only a 3-dimensional signal propagation space, but also an additional smart optical functioning component like as a diffraction-limited imaging lens. The novel and smart functioning of the GRIN substrate was confirmed by experiment on imaging of an input signal to multiple destinations.

  • We present an attractive real time in-vivo endoscopic microscope with a resolution of submicron, in which two kinds of optical correcting plates are inserted to eliminate higher order spherical aberration and field curvature. And, since the conventional objective lens is replaced to GRIN lenses with diameter of 1 mm, the above endoscopic microscope can be effectively utilized to invade minimally for live animals.

  • According to recent studies by scientists about how to search for food, homes and the mates, it is found that the gradient information plays a key role. From cells to insects and large animals, they mostly either have special sensing organism or use a strategy to measure the gradient. Use of a perturbation as an additional input is introduced for sensor signal processing in order to get the gradient information. Different from typical approach, which calculates the gradient from differentiation, the proposed processing is done by a form of integration, thus it is very robust to noise. Discrete time domain analyses are given for one, two and three input functions for the estimation of the gradients. The amplitude and the frequency of the perturbation are two important parameters for this approach. A quantitative index to measure the effects of the amplitude is developed based on the linear regression analysis. The frequency of the perturbation is to be selected high enough to finish one period of the perturbation before the property is changed significantly with respect to time. Another quantitative index is proposed for guiding the selection of the frequency.

  • A novel reference point detection method is proposed by exploiting tile gradient probabilistic model that captures the curvature information of fingerprint. The detection of reference point is accomplished through searching and locating the points of occurrence of the most evenly distributed gradient in a probabilistic sense. The uniformly distributed gradient texture represents either the core point itself or those of similar points that can be used to establish the rigid reference from which to map the features for recognition. Key benefits are reductions in preprocessing and consistency of locating the same points as the reference points even when processing arch type fingerprints. Moreover, the new feature extraction method is proposed by improving the existing feature extraction using filterbank method. Experimental results indicate the superiority of tile proposed scheme in terms of computational time in feature extraction and verification rate in various noisy environments. In particular, the proposed gradient probabilistic model achieved 49% improvement under ambient noise, 39.2% under brightness noise and 15.7% under a salt and pepper noise environment, respectively, in FAR for the arch type fingerprints. Moreover, a reduction of 0.07sec in reference point detection time of the GPM is shown possible compared to using the leading the poincare index method and a reduction of 0.06sec in code extraction time of the new filterbank mettled is shown possible compared to using the leading the existing filterbank method.
