  • A refractory grade low-cost silicon nitride powder was chemically analyzed, purified, and gas pressure sintered with the sintering additives. As-received powder contained a significant amount of free-Si, 0.72 wt% of Fe, 0.5 wt% of al and 0.31 wt% of Ca. Oxygen and carbon contents of the powder were 3.3 wt% and 0.4 wt%, respectively, and it consisted of 96% of $\beta$-phase and 4% of $\alpha$-phase. After lowering the Fe content and nitriding treatment, the powder was sintered with 6 wt% yttria and 2 wt% alumina for 1 h between 1823 K and 2123 K in order to examine the sintering behavior. Fully dense samples were obtained by sintering at 2123k for 2h. For comparison, a commercially available high-grade powder was also sintered at the same time. The low-cost powder showed much slower densification rate than the high-grade powder. Fully dense sample prepared from the low-cost powder contained a number of coarse grains with a low aspect ratio, and its hardness, fracture toughness, flexural strength and thermal shock resistance were not as good as those of the sample prepared with the high-grade powder.

  • High strength steels have been continually being developed to improve in fuel economy in automotive and ensure safety of passengers. New bonding and welding methods have been required for improving weldability on high strength steels. In this study, resistance spot welding and Weld-bond with nugget diameters of 4.0mm, 5.0mm, 6.0mm and 7.0mm were produced and tested, respectively. In order to confirm the effect of nugget diameters on tensile shear characteristic of the Weld-bond, tensile shear characteristics of Weld-bond were compared with those of resistance spot welding and adhesive bonding. Peak load of Weld-bond were increased as the nugget diameter increases. After appearing maximum peak load continuous fracture followed with second peak owing to load being carried by resistance spot weldment. Fracture modes of the adhesive layer in Weld-bond fractures were represented by mixed fracture mode, which are cohesive failure on adhesive part and button failure at resistance spot welds. The results showed that the tensile shear properties can be improved by applying Weld-bond on TRIP steel, and more apparent with nugget diameter higher than 5${\surd}$t.

  • This study dealt with correlation analysis between deformation strength and rut resistance of asphalt concretes based on binder grade in Superpave specification with changing submerging time. Currently, Mashall mix design is known to have little correlation with rutting related performance. Therefore, some agencies started to use the Superpave method for asphalt mix design. But this method has a weak point in that it can not distinct mechanical property of the asphalt mixtures designed. For solution of these problem, this study used deformation strength, $S_D$, of Kim test which is a new approach under development for finding property which represents rut resistance characteristics of asphalt mixtures under static loading. This study used two aggregates from two regions and five PG asphalt binders. Final rut depth (DR) and dynamic stability (DS) from wheel tracking (WT) test were obtained. and $S_D$ value of the same mixture specimen which was made by gyratory compactor was obtained using loading head [4(1.0)]. Three submerging times 30min, 40min, 50min were used as a test variable at $60^{\circ}C$. Correlation analysis of DR and DS with $S_D$ were performed based on PG grade. It was found out that the $S_D$ has a high correlation with DR and DS of superpave mixtures. The highest $R^2$ was found from the $S_D$ values of 30min. submerged specimen.

  • This study evaluated the asphalt binder characteristics for the hot-recycled asphalt mixture in which RAP was added in ambient temperature for surface course as well as for base course. RAPs were collected from four sources and their physical properties were evaluated. Mix designs were performed using 10 and 20% RAP contents for surface courses and 10, 20 and 30% for base courses. A virgin asphalt with the penetration grade of 60-80 was used for mixing recycled mixtures. Physical properties of recycled binders, including penetration, absolute viscosity, GPC, BBR and penetration after TFO were measured. From the results, regression analysis of absolute viscosity versus LMS in GPC showed $R^2$ being over 0.95, showing that GPC results estimate the absolute viscosity with relative accuracy. In BBR test, the resistance of recycled mixtures at low service temperature was inferior to the control, because the low temperature PG of recycled binder was one grade higher than that of the control binder.

  • The rocks exposed on the surface undergo expedite weathering process due to the effects of climatic process, etc. and the weathering process changes the properties of minerals, thereby lowering the stability of rocks. Therefore, it is important to examine the composition of minerals in order to investigate the resistance of rocks against weathering, which is performed by weathering sensitivity analysis. And microscopic flaking test was performed for the bored samples in this study and the composition of minerals that are vulnerable to weathering was measured through mode analysis. The lithological and mineralogical weathering factors were evaluated through this process. Furthermore, the degree of progress of weathering was identified by quantitatively measuring the actual mineral composition of rocks through X-Ray diffraction analysis and identifying the secondary minerals through observation with a scanning electron microscope. This analyzing the weathering sensitivity was analyzed to be capable of determining appropriate indicators that can determine weather resistance and predicting the weathering grade using chemical weathering speed.

  • This paper presents a comparative study of the AC and MFDC resistance spot welding process with consideration of sheet thickness. The previous studies have confirmed that there is difference in the optimum welding current and expulsion current with AC and MFDC. The aim of this study was revealing the effect of sheet thickness on weldable current range and expulsion behavior for AC and MFDC welding processes. The optimum welding current of AC was lower (1.6 kA) than MFDC welding process in 0.8 mm sheet thickness. Early nugget growth being caused by the peak current of AC developed weld interface deformation, which resulted in suppressing the growth of corona bond and occurrence of low current expulsion. The resistance spot welding for thicker sheet (1.4 mm) required lower current of 0.6 kA for the expulsion on the MFDC welding process. The growth of contact diameter (size of corona bond) and button diameter was linear up to the expulsion current with MFDC welding process. Therefore, more attention is required when the AC and MFDC resistance spot welding process is applied for different thickness of steel sheet combination for automotive application.

  • Steel column is very important an structural element in steel framed building and plays a key role in sustataining the applied external load. Generally, the fire resistance performance of steel column has been executed by application of fire standard and vertical furnace having a limitation in height. Therefore, the fire resistance test was conducted with a H-section column having 3500 mm in length and hinge to hinge boundary condition. And the fire protective material derived from the fire test can be applied to any kind of boundary conditions and lengths. However, it is hard to determine the fire resistance. In this paper, to make sure the structural stability of them at high temperature according to various boundary conditions and lengths of H-section column, an analysis was done by using the mechanical properties and an heat transfer theory.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the possibilities of blending carbon black, which is known for its permeability as well as its strong heat and fire resistance, into concrete, in a manner that reinforces its strengths mentioned above. Experiments show that in non-solidified, fresh-mixed concrete, the addition of carbon black effectively reduced slump level and air content due to its absorptiveness and minute particle size. It also showed good results in terms of coagulation time, penetration resistance and bleeding level. In solid concrete, it showed better strength than plain concrete. Due to the pozzolanic reaction, its strength became more pronounced over time. At approximately 850 degrees Celsius, the heat and fire resistance level increased in parallel to the level of chemical substitution (by carbon black). Drying shrinkage level appeared to be optimal, and environmental assessment test results related to CO, CO2 and formaldehyde also scored better than plain concrete. In summary, with the appropriate use of AE water-reducing agents, carbon black can prove to be a strong candidate as an ingredient for industry-grade concrete.

  • AHydrogen induced cracking (HIC) was phenomenologically studied in terms of the effect of nonmetallic inclusions and hot rolling process parameters. By comparing the level of non-metallic inclusions in two different kinds of commercial grade steels having different HIC resistance, the role of non-metallic inclusions in HIC occurrence was investigated. Change in inclusion morphology and distribution during hot rolling was also studied throughout slab, rolling at austenite recrystallization region (roughing mill; RM) and rolling at austenite non-recrystallization region (finish mill; FM). In addition, the contribution of RM and FM parameters to HIC was investigated from the standpoint of change in inclusion morphology during hot rolling processes. As a result, HIC was closely related to the separation of large complex inclusion during hot rolling process. Large complex inclusions originated from the improper Ca treatment, after which equilibrium composition of slag should have resulted in eutectoid composition. By controlling the equilibrium slag composition equivalent to eutectoid one, HIC resistance could be improved due to the reduced size of inclusions. In addition, change in reduction/pass in RM had an effect on HIC resistance of steels while that in FM did not. Increase in the reduction/pass in the latter stage of RM improved HIC resistance of steels by enhancing the void enclosure around inclusions.

  • Artificial graphite generally manufactured by carbonization sintering of shape-body of kneaded mixture using granular cokes as filler and pitch as binder, going through pitch impregnation process if necessary and finally applying graphitization heat treatment. Graphite materials are used for core internal structural components of the High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGR) because of their excellent heat resistibility and resistance of crack progress. The HTGR has a core consisting of an array of stacked graphite fuel blocks are machined from IG-110, a high-strength, fine-grained isotropic graphite. In this study, crack stabilization and micro-structures were measured by bend strength and fracture toughness of isotropic graphite grade IG-110. It is important to the reactor designer as they may govern the life of the graphite components and hence the life of the reactor. It was resulted crack propagation, bend strength, compressive strength and micro-structures of IG-110 graphite by scanning electron microscope and universal test machine.
