  • Precipitation data and groundwater level data were collected for Korean peninsular and Jeju island. The relationship between precipitation and groundwater level and the correlation between the moving average of precipitation and goundwater level were analyzed. Critical infiltration, which is the spatially averaged maximum daily infiltration depth over interested region, is considered when the precipitation data was modified for moving average process and correlation between the moving average of modified precipitation and groundwater level. High correlation regions, which have greater than 0.6 correlation coefficients, were selected after the analysis with ciritical infiltration. Twenty-six regions were selected for high correlation regions. If we divide the regions by administrative district, there are nine regions for Gyungsang-Do, five regions for Chunchung-Do, four regions for Gyunggi-Do and Gangwon-Do, three regions for Jolla-Do, and one region for Jeju island. The groundwater level data for high correlation regions shows obvious response after precipitation event and there are few cases with abrupt change in groundwater level without precipitation-related event.

  • The groundwater chemistry is heavily influenced by land use. This study has investigated the groundwater quality and contamination characteristic associated with land use. Contamination index ($C_d$) was estimated for evaluating and areal distribution of groundwater contamination degree. Groundwater samples collected from 216 locations in the study area show great variability in chemical composition. Electrical conductance ranges from 100 to $31,360\;{\mu}S/cm$. The pH values are between 4.6 (acidic) and 8.57 (weak alkaline). The water types predominantly represent the $Ca-HCO_3$ and $Ca-Na-HCO_3$ types, whereas, in the residential and business areas, the water type is shifted to (Na, Ca)-Cl type with rich concentration of Cl. The $C_d$ values of the study area range from 1.1 to 117.6 with a mean of 9.56.

  • It is getting difficult to manage water resources in South Korea because more than half of annual precipitation is concentrated in the summer season and its intensity is getting severe due to global warming and climate change. Artificial recharge schemes can be a useful method to manage water resources in Korea adapting to climate change. Patent analysis enables us to prevent overlapping investment and to find out unoccupied technology. In this study, international patent trends and barriers of artificial recharge technology are analysed for patents of Korea, Japan, the United States and Europe. The four artificial recharge methods such as well recharge, surface infiltration, bank filtration and underground structures are classified as main class and the nine sub-technologies such as water intake, water treatment, injection wells, monitoring of groundwater flow, groundwater pumping, surface infiltration/soil aquifer treatment, radial collection well, iron/manganese treatment, and underground subsurface dam are classified as intermediate class. Water intake techniques are subdivided into five classifications. Total 1,281 of patents, searched by WIPS DB tool and selected after removing noisy patents, are analyzed quantitatively to evaluate application trends by year, applicant, country for each classified technologies and analyzed qualitatively to find out occupied and unoccupied technologies. It is expected that upcoming research and development project could be performed efficiently in that an avoidance plan for the similar patents and differentiation plan for the advancing patents are set up based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis results from this research.

  • This paper has proposed a new-type groundwater auto-monitoring system based on Multi-Sensor Device. The system adopted Multi-Sensor Device as host computer of data acquisition, used Windows Mobile which was prevalent operation system of Multi-Sensor Device. It adopted serial port CAN and RS485 as the communication interface between goundwater sensor Device and monitor host machine and utilized serial-linked multi-sensor design to measure effectively according to the depth of groundwater. We present a design for a groundwater monitoring system based on a network of wirelessly linked sensors. The proposed solution will enable groundwater researchers and decision makers to have quick access to the groundwater data with less effort and cost. Though our design is initially meant for groundwater monitoring, it can be easily adapted to other fields of environmental monitoring.

  • The seasonal variation of water quality was studied in the Hwabongcheon. It runs though a small catchment where shallow groundwater was contaminated with $NO_3-N$ by intensive livestock facilities. A direct inflow of animal waste and incoming of contaminated groundwater affected its water quality. In the dry season, an important factor of water quality in the Hwabongcheon was direct inflow of animal waste. In the wet season, concentrations of $NO_3-N$ in the Hwabongcheon were elevated in spite of being diluted by precipitation. It could be explained by the effect of increased incoming of contaminated groundwater and showed by oxygen and hydrogen isotope values. $NO_3-N$ concentration in the Cheongmicheon was lower than that in the Hwabongcheon, so it increased next a junction. This effect was intense in wet season because $NO_3-N$ concentration in the Hwabongcheon was high.

  • The relationship between precipitation and groundwater level and the correlation between the moving average of precipitation and goundwater level were analyzed for the southern area of Korean peninsular. There were somewhat different patterns of seasonal fluctuation of groundwater level data. The groundwater level data tends to decrease in dry spell and increase in wet spell however the range between maximum and minimum values is quite different for each gauging point. The maximum correlation coefficient for each gauging station is obtained in a range of 20- to 130-day moving average period of precipitation. The critical infiltration, which is the maximum daily infiltration averaged throughout watershed, value is turned out to have the range of 10 to 90 mm and the moving average period is 10 to 150 days. We could have stronger correlation when we consider critical infiltration and modify the original precipitation data than we use original precipitation data.

  • As the water supply system has been installed over the country, the management of drinking water could be easier and controlled by experts. This helps to supply safe water to public. However, in rural area, small scale water treatment systems or groundwater haves been used as drinking water supplier. The drinking water including groundwater contains various contaminants. Private or small scale water treatment system can be contaminated with heavy metals such as arsenic, selenium and strontium which are usually originated from natural source. Arsenic, selenium and strontium have been determined from the goundwater, small scale water treatment system in the Kyungpook area. The results have been compared with the Korean and international standards. The results were analyzed on the geological characteristics of the area. Among the total of 1,412 samples, 76 samples showed higher concentration of arsenic than WHO guideline and the Korean drinking water standard. Total 4 samples had higher contents of selenium than WHO guideline which was $10{\mu}g/L$. In the analysis of geological characteristics, arsenic was highly released from a few area and which are in order of biotite granodiorite > biotite granite > daegu formation. Selenium has been highly released from biotite granite > black shale > diluvium.

  • The comparison of water balance and nutrient loading from paddy field with different irrigation management were carried out during 1999 ${\sim}$ 2002 at two different sites; one is irrigated with groundwater and the other is irrigated with surface water. For the surface water irrigated paddy field, irrigation was performed continuously during growing season. Whereas, initial irrigation with groundwater was applied during initial growing season, and the ponded water depth was maintained by natural precipitation since initial irrigation. The runoff frequency of groundwater irrigated paddy field was less than that of surface water irrigated paddy field. The nutrient concentration of ponded water was high by fertilization at early cultural periods, so reducing surface drainage during fertilization period can reduce nutrient loading from paddy fields. Amount of irrigation water to surface water irrigated paddy field was higher than to groundwater irrigated paddy field and evapotranspiration was similar because it is influenced by climate. Overall input in and output from paddy field irrigated with goundwater were less than that with surface water. This study indicate that efficient water management can reduce surface drainage outflow, save water, and protect water quality. It might be important BMPs for paddy field.

  • The objective of this study is the evaluation of the tunneling effect on the goundwater-surface water interaction. The designed tunnel line is laid beneath the Hapo-cheon, which runs throughout the study area. And, the pre-evaluation of the tunnel-influence on the Gapo-cheon is urgently needed. However, it is very difficult to find out the similar domestic and/or foreign cases. In this study, the numerical modeling technique was not considered because of the insufficient data. Instead of the numerical modeling, the measurement and analysis of the stream flow rates 5 different points were adopted to evaluate the influence of the tunnel construction on the Gapo-cheon. Based on the analysis of flow monitoring data, it can be concluded that 39% of flow rate in Gapo-cheon is contributed by the groundwater discharge, as baseflow and the construction of tunnel can seriously decrease the flow rate in Gapo-cheon.

  • Analysis of water-level fluctuation due to goundwater-surface water interaction in coastal aquifers is carried out by numerical modeling. The conceptual model used in this study has a stream boundary and a tidal boundary that forms a right angle and the stream partially penetrates the aquifer. We analyzed the effect of each boundary and the simultaneous effect of the two boundary conditions. The area of influence caused by the stream boundary increased during the simulation, while the influence zone of the coastal boundary was relatively constant. The groundwater level near the zone where two boundaries meet may rise by the action of combined effect of the two boundaries or may not change by cancelling the effect of each boundary. Thereafter, care must be taken when hydraulic parameters are estimated using sinusoidal oscillations of hydraulic head in coastal aquifers. Sensitivity analysis is employed to develop insight into the controls on groundwater level fluctuations. In this study our analyses focused on the effect of conductance and the stream width to the aquifer nearby.
