For the hygienic production of oyster at Goseong bay, this study investigated the marine bacteriological condition of the area from 2008 to April 2009. Average seawater temperature and salinity ranged $2.8-19.3.0^{\circ}C$ and 32.61-34.91 psu, respectively. The coliform group and fecal coliform of seawater ranged < 1.8-4,900 MPN/100 mL and < 1.8-700 MPN/100 mL, respectively. The coliform group of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ranged < 1.8-13,000 MPN/100 g. Fecal coliform of oyster ranged and < 1.8-310 MPN/100 g. Only one of 140 samples was exceeded in the U.S NSSP standard (> 230 MPN/100 g) of fecal coliform. Fecal coliform in seawater was on the level of clean sea, below the U.S. NSSP standards, and the contents of fecal coliform and heavy metals in cultured oyster were also below the U.S. NSSP, heavy metal standards, showing that the sea area is bacteriologically safe.
Goseong bay, located in southeast sea of Korea with an area of 2,100 ha, is a semi-enclosed bay well-known for oyster farming cultured in an extended range of 148 ha. The objective of this study is to provide the fundamental data in order to manage the effective sea area. A total 26 of surface sediment were collected from Goseong bay to evaluate their sedimentary environment and heavy metals. The loss on Ignition (LOI), C/N ratio, acid volatile sulfide (AVS) and heavy metals were analyzed. loss on ignition (LOI) of surface sediment range from 1.00% to 3.03% (average 2.00%). The carbonate content ranges from 0.52% to 4.29% (average 2.37%). C/N ratio of organic matter showed that most part of organic matter comes from neighboring continent. Acid volatile sulfide (AVS) value of surface sediment from 0.02 mg/g to 1.43 mg/g (average 0.24 mg/g). A ten element of surface sediments (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) were calculated by enrichment factor (Ef) and the results show that some areas are highly polluted with respect Cu and Hg. The correlation matrix displays the existence of remarkable levels of correlation with both positive and negative values among different variable pairs. LOI and AVS showed both positive values. LOI and AVS values falls under 2% and 1%. Therefore, Goseong bay showed good in quality of sediment.
Real-time monitoring for environmental factors (temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a, etc.) and fugacity of carbon dioxide ($fCO_2$) was conducted at an oyster Crassostrea gigas farm in Goseong Bay, south coast of Korea during 2-4th of November, 2011. Surface temperature and salinity were ranged from $17.9-18.7^{\circ}C$ and 32.7-33.8, respectively, with daily and inter-daily variations due to tidal currents. Surface $fCO_2$ showed a range of $390-510{\mu}atm$ and was higher than air $CO_2$ during the study period. Surface temperature, salinity and $fCO_2$ are showed significant correlations with chl.-a and nutrients, respectively. It means when chl.-a value is high in surface water of the oyster farm, active biological production consume $CO_2$ and nutrients from environments and produce oxygen, suggesting a tight feedback between biological processes and environmental reaction. Thus, factors affecting the surface $fCO_2$ were evaluated using a simple mass balance. Temperature and biological productions by phytoplankton are the main factors for $CO_2$ drawdown from afternoon to early night, while biological respiration increases seawater $CO_2$ at night. Air-sea exchange fraction acts as a $CO_2$ decreasing gear during the study period and is much effective when the wind speed is higher than $2-3m\;s^{-1}$. Future studies about organic carbon and biological production/respiration are required for evaluating the roles of oyster farms on carbon sink and coastal carbon cycle.

Estuarine ecosystem responds sensitively to natural and anthropogenic perturbations. lt is necessary to identify the direction of the change when the perturbation occurs as well as to understand the structure and functioning of estuarine ecosystem for a proper management of the area. In this study, the estuarine habitats were classified into different ecological districts so as to the switch from one district to another district could be related to the environmental change due to the perturbations. Total 16 ecological districts was defined according to the presence of barrage, salinity and vegetation characteristics. The defined ecological districts were applied to small estuaries in Goseong bay, south sea of Korea (Baedun, Guman, Maam, Goseong) to distinguish different regions which might have characteristic bottom topography, inclinations of river bottom, sediment characteristics, salinity structure and area of vegetation. Total 7 out of 16 ecological district was identified in this region; NFB (natural, fresh, bare), NHB (natural, high salinity, bare), NLV (natural, low salinity, vegetated) in natural (without barrage) estuaries and CFB (closed, fresh, bare), CFV( closed, fresh vegetated), CLV (closed, low salinity, vegetated), CHB (closed, high salinity, bare) in closed (with barrage) estuary. A comparison of environmental factors and biota between CHB and CLV demonstrated the effect of barrage on estuarine ecosystem. The height and sediment characteristics of CHB and CLV were similar but the average salinity was lower in CLV than in CHB due to the barrage, which produced favorable condition for the Phragmites australis in CLV. Information regarding the ecological districts in various sizes and location could be useful for predicting the ecosystem change due to natural and anthropogenic perturbations and for preparing management actions.
The effect of estuarine dams on fish assembladge in Danghang Bay of Goseong, Korea was determined using monthly samples collected by a beam trawl and a cast net at the natural estuaries and damed estuary from September 2011 to August 2012. In the natural estuaries without dam, salinity was relatively high showing a large diurnal change. Estuarine fishes such as striped sandgoby, Acentrogobius pflaumii and yellowfin goby, Acanthogobius flavimanus, were dominantly caught in the sea side water. In the dammed estuary, freshwater species such as pale chub, Zacco platypus and triden goby, Tridentiger brevispinis were dominanlty caught. The dam in the Danghang estuary have significant effects on the fish assemblage through aquatic environmental change such as salinity.

As an important fishing ground in the southern coast of Korea, Jinhae Bay is characterized by a high level of fisheries production. However, its marine-ecosystem has shifted owing to environmental changes such as industrial development and high water temperatures over the decades. This study analyzes the fisheries production, discards, mean trophic level, and fishing-in-balance index using annual fishing data from five regions surrounding Jinhae Bay for the period 2005-2022, as well as using additional forecasting trends by 2027 using ARIMA (Auto Regressive Intergrated Moving Average). The results shows, that the production in Goseong will decrease continuously by 2027, as compared with that in other areas. Additionally, byproduct management is considered necessary in Tongyeong. For the marine-ecosystem index, Tongyeong indicates stable catch ratio of large fish species and a fishing-in-balance exceeding 0. Finally, the annual catch variation for six pelagic fish species in Jinhae Bay by 2060 is estimated based on the IPCC climate-change scenario, in which the recent low level that decreased to approximately 20 thousand ton in early 2020 is projected to recover to approximately 40 thousand ton in the 2020s and 2040s, followed by an incremental decline by 2060.
Moon jellyfish Aurelia coerulea are highly abundant off the coast of Tongyeong, Korea. We measured the density of A. coerulea in this area using a scientific echosounder at frequencies of 38 and 120 kHz, and then applied a distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) model to calculate the target strength of the echosounder at each frequency. Then, we used the frequency difference method to extract jellyfish echo signals and estimate the A. coerulea density. A. coerulea was evenly distributed throughout the water column; the backscattering strength ranged from -75 to -65 dB. In May and August, the A. coerulea densities at survey lines 3 and 4 were estimated at 1.5-1.6 and 0.2-0.9 g/m2, with mean weighted densities of 1.04 and 0.48 g/m2, respectively. In September, the A. coerulea densities estimates in Jaran Bay and Goseong Bay were 0.6-2.1 and 0.1-0.4 g/m2, with mean weighted densities of 1.25 and 0.24 g/m2, respectively.

In this study, the seasonal field survey was conducted in Goseong Jaran Bay(22 stations), Geoje Hansan Bay(15 stations) and Jinhae Bay(18 stations). We analyzed the sediment environmental parameters(Chemical Oxygen Demand, Ignition Loss, Acid Volatile Sulfides, Total Organic Carbon) and biotic parameters of macrobenthic polychaetes(number of species, density, diversity, evenness). It had a good correlation between total organic carbon and polychaete diversity(R=0.61, P<0.01), and we made a decision them as representative environmental indices. As a result of that, regarding the criteria in the assessment of farm environment, we suggest concentrations of total organic carbon : Peak Point = 15 mg/g dry, Warning Point = 26 mg/g dry, Contaminated Point = 31 mg/g dry and polychaete diversity : ~2.6(Good), 2.6~2.1(Moderate), 2.1~1.2(Poor) and 1.2~(Bad). This could be a scientific basis to establish the environmental standards for fishery management.
The present work was conducted in order to survey bacterial flora inhabiting in Crassostrea gigas. The Crassostrea gigas, sea water and mud of its living environments were sampled at Goseong bay, Gyungnam and Dolsan, Yeochon-gun, Chungnam at the period of from December 1978 to February 1979. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. The range of bacterial counts found in Crassostrea gigas, sea water and mud was respectively 10$^4$~10$^{6}$ , 10$^{5}$ ~10$^{6}$ and 10$^3$~10$^4$. 2. Among the bacterial 382 strains isolated from the those sample sources, Vibrio genus was 43.5%, Pseudomonas 16.7%, Moraxella 11.5% and Flavobacterium-cytophaga 8.9%. 3. Among 173 strains classified as Vibrio genus, 56% of them was found in Crassostrea gigas, 54% in mud and 25% in sea water. 4. Pseudomonas type I was found only in sea water and type III/IV found in sea water, mud and Crassostrea gigas. Especially type III/IV was found much in sea water.

This study tries to examine papers on coastal terrace in the East Coast of South Korea and to summarize formative age and elevation of the terrace. Spatial and temporal variations of uplift rate in the Coast based on absolute age published are also reviewed. The terrace in the middle part in the Coast from Goseong to Samcheok distributes in an elevation of 10-20 m and its formative age is MIS 5a. The terraces during MIS 5e and 7 develop on an elevation of 20-35 m and 60-80 m, respectively. The mid-southern part in the Coast from Uljin to Yeongil Bay has the terraces with elevations of 10-25 m and 25-45 m and their ages are MIS 5a or 5c and 5e, respectively. The terraces with elevations of 10-25 m and 30-45 m correspond to MIS 5a and 5e, respectively, in the southern part in the Coast from Homigot to Busan. Assuming that elevation of sea level during the formation of each terrace is the same as in the present time, uplift rates in the Coast range from 0.05 to 1.36 m/ky with an average of approximately 0.33 m/ky. The highest and lowest rates since MIS 5 are found in the Gyeongju (approximately 0.39 m/ky) and Pohang (approximately 0.19 m/ky) areas. With a consideration of elevation of sea level at that time, however, the middle, midsouthern and southern parts in the Coast show uplift rates of 0.16-0.28 m/ky, 0.20-0.36 m/ky and 0.24- 0.36 m/ky since MIS 5, respectively, suggesting that the southern part in the Coast has experienced relatively higher uplift rate.
