Mining activity causes environmental pollution and geological hazards such as ground subsidence or landslide of which continuous monitoring is necessary. In this study, the activity on the Fushun West Open-Pit Mine (FWOPM), one of the largest open-pit coal mines in Asia located in Fushun, Liaoning Province, China, was analyzed by using a time-series Sentinel-1 InSAR coherence dataset. By using the difference between the two Digital Elevation Models (DEM) of the area, it was possible to confirm that there was a stockpiling activity in the western area of the FWOPM while excavation activity in the eastern area. By using RGB composite images using the yearly-averaged InSAR coherence images, the activity of the mine was confirmed by period, which was confirmed by Google Earth optical images. As a result, it was possible to confirm three landslides and the related activities on the northwest slope and the dumping activity on the west slope of FWOPM.
Currently most of leak detection monitoring systems use digital maps with paying royalties, and this increases the cost of system construction and financial burdens on local self-governing bodies that manage such systems. Moreover, they have inefficiencies in repair and maintenance, functional expansion, and compatibility with other systems. Thus, this study developed a waterworks pipe network monitoring system that pursues low cost and high efficiency using general-purpose maps on the Internet such as google maps. As this system uses highly compatible free maps, it costs less in construction and its hardware requirements are lower than existing systems, and consequently, overall monitoring performance is enhanced and the cost of construction goes down sharply. This study also proposed a method for pipeline DB construction, which can be started together with the construction of the monitoring system, in order to improve the field applicability of the system.
geoContents have been closely related with personal life since the Google Earth and Street View by Google and the Road View by Daum were introduced. So, Location-based content, which is referred to geoContents, involving geometric spacial information and location-based image information is a sharp rise in demand. A mobile mapping system used in the area of map upgrade and road facility management has been having difficulties in satisfying the demand in the cost and time for obtaining these kinds of contents. This paper addresses geoData acquisition and processing system for producing panoramic images. The system consists of 3 devices: the first device is 3 GPS receivers for acquiring location information which is including position, attitude, orientation, and time. The second is 6 cameras for image information. And the last is to synchronize the both data. The geoData acquired by the proposed system and the method for authoring geoContents which are referred to a panoramic image with position, altitude, and orientation will be used as an effective way for establishing the various location-based content and providing them service area.

This study aims to create a Local Climate Zone(LCZ) map of Seoul by using World Urban Database and Access Portal Tools(WUDAPT) protocol, and to analyze the characteristics of the Seoul LCZs. For this purpose, training samples of 17 LCZ types were collected by using Landsat images and Google Earth. LCZ Classification and Filtering were performed by SAGA GIS. An ArcGIS was used to analyze the characteristics of each LCZ type. The characteristics of the LCZ types were analyzed by focusing on building surface fraction ratio, impervious surface fraction ratio, pervious surface fraction ratio, building stories and air temperature. The results show that one filtering was found to be most appropriate. While Yangcheongu and Yeongdeungpogu with the higher annual and maximum mean air temperature than other areas have the higher rate of LCZ 3(compact low-rise) and LCZ 4(open high-rise), Jongnogu, Eunpyeonggu, Nowongu and Gwanakgu with the lower value have the higher rate of LCZ A(Dence trees). The values of building surface fraction ratio, impervious surface fraction ratio and building stories of each LCZ were included in the range of WUDAPT for most LCZs. However, the values of pervious surface fraction ratio were out of the range, in particular, in the LCZs 4~6 and 9~10. This study shows the usability and applicability of the WUDAPT methodology and its climate zone classification used in many countries as a basic data for the landscape planning and policy to improve the thermal environment in urban areas.

We studied driftwood behaviors including generation and deposition in a tsunami using a numerical simulation. We used an integrated two-dimensional numerical model, which included a driftwood dynamics model. The study area was Sendai, Japan. Observation data collected by Inagaki et al. (2012) were used to verify the simulation results by comparing them with driftwood deposition patterns. A simplified model was developed to consider the threshold of driftwood generation by the drag force of water flows. To consider the volume of driftwood generated, we estimated the total wood number in the study area using Google Earth. Therefore, we simulated more than 13,000 pieces of driftwood that were generated and transported inland from approximately 300,000 trees that were growing in the forest. The final distribution of the driftwood was similar to the observation data. The reproducibility of the generation and deposition patterns of driftwood showed good agreement in terms of longitudinal deposition pattern. In the future, a sensitivity analysis on driftwood parameters, such as the size of the wood, boundary conditions, and grid size, will be implemented to predict the travel patterns of driftwood. Such modeling will be a useful methodology for disaster prediction based on water flow and driftwood.
In modern society, human and social damages caused by natural disasters and frequent disaster accidents have been increased year by year. Prompt access to dangerous disaster sites that are inaccessible or inaccessible using state-of-the-art Earth observation equipment such as satellites, drones, and survey robots, and timely collection and analysis of meaningful disaster information. It can play an important role in protecting people's property and life throughout the entire disaster management cycle, such as responding to disaster sites and establishing mid-to long-term recovery plans. This special issue introduces the National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI)'s disaster management technology that utilizes various Earth observation platforms, such as mobile survey vehicles equipped with close-range disaster site survey sensors, drones, and survey robots, as well as satellite technology, which is a tool of remote earth observation. Major research achievements include detection of damage from water disasters using Google Earth Engine, mid- and long-term time series observation, detection of reservoir water bodies using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and artificial intelligence, analysis of resident movement patterns in case of forest fire disasters, and data analysis of disaster safety research. Efficient integrated management and utilization plan research results are summarized. In addition, research results on scientific investigation activities on the causes of disasters using drones and survey robots during the investigation of inaccessible and dangerous disaster sites were described.
In order to support the development of wind farms in Jejudo, a wind resource database for Jejudo has been established using a meteor-statistical analysis of KIER(Korea Institute of Energy Research) met-mast measurements and KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) weather data. The analysis included wind statistics, tower shading, an exposure category classification using satellite images, the effect of atmospheric stability on the wind profile exponent, and a correlation matrix of wind speed to gain an understanding of the meteorological correlation between long-term weather observation stations and short-term met-mast measurements. The wind resource database for Jejudo, is to be provided as an add-on to Google $Earth^{TM}$, which is expected to be utilized as a guideline for the selection of an appropriate reference site for long-term correction in the next wind farm development project.
The cool surface ratio could be used as a proxy of the overall thermal environment contributing to heat islands in urban area. This research proposes a comparative evaluation framework in an objective and quantitative way for measuring cool surface ratios. Two university campuses (Kyungpook National University: KNU, South Korea and UC Davis: University of California, Davis, USA) were selected as case study sites in order to monitor cool surface condition. Google Earth combined with digital maps realistically identified the major type of cool surfaces such as cool roofs and water bodies in the study area. Cool surfaces were sparsely identified over the KNU campus while the UC Davis campus was heavily covered by cool surfaces such as cool roofs and water bodies, resulting in almost four times more first-grade cool surfaces, as compared to KNU. It is confirmed that standard remote sensing technology can offer the viable method of measuring and comparing the campus-wide cool surface condition. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference to initiate a nation-wide cool surface strategy since objective evidence has been provided based on area-wide measurement for the cool surface in the two university context.
We proposed "Table Mediator" which is a tabletop system for digital storytelling that uses web-retrieved information for the students' educational field trip. Students can perform their storytelling for their virtual pre-field trip to build up a sequential path as a story with web-retrieved documents, satellite images, geographical information, and group discussion. The proposed system was designed to lessen the limitation of individual interaction such as restricted viewpoint and biased inclination by group digital storytelling. Local interactions also have the limitation such as insufficient information and knowledge and the system supplied the rich live information such as subjective critiques or recently discovered history, or new updates for building a story that makes users arrange their own idea as a consistent story to lessen the limitation of the local interactions. The system can be used for various applications such as travel, education and other collaborative works with group interaction.

The purpose of the study is to develop and validate landslide susceptibility map of Bhotang village development committee, Nepal using FR (Frequency Ration) and SI (Statistical Index) methods. For the purpose, firstly, a landslide inventory map was constructed based on mainly high resolution satellite images available in Google Earth Pro, and rest fieldwork as verification. Secondly, ten conditioning factors of landslide occurrence, namely: altitude, slope, aspect, mean topographic wetness index, landcover, normalized difference vegetation index, dominant soil, distance to river, distance to lineaments and rainfall, were derived and used for the development of landslide susceptibility map in GIS (Geographic Information System) environment. The landslide inventory of total 116 landslides was divided randomly such that 70% were used for training and remaining 30% for validating result by receiver operating characteristics curve analysis. The area under the curve were found to be greater than 0.7 indicating an acceptable susceptibility maps obtained using FR and SI methods in GIS for hilly region of Nepal.
