  • The present study provides descriptions of the cellular associations of the seminiferous epithelium cycle in the Crocidura shantungensis. The cycle of the seminiferous epithelium was divided into 14 stages, and developing spermatids were subdivided into 15 steps. The Golgi phase occurs the first two steps, and the cap phase had the next four consecutive steps. The acrosomal and maturation phases were consisted of steps $7\~14$, and the remaining one step consisted the spermiation phase. The Ad type of spermatogonia was observed whole stages, and Ap, In and B spermatogonia were observed from stage II to stage VI. The preleptotene, leptotene and zygotene of primary spermatocytes were observed from VII to XIV stages, and pachytene spermatocyte was observed from I to XII stages. The diplotene spermatocyte was observed XIII stages, and meiotic figures and secondary spermatocytes were observed stage XIV. Our results provide the foundation for a variety of future studies of the spermiogenesis of C. shantungensis.

  • A picophytoplankton has been isolated from the western channel of the Korea Strait. The cell was isolated by dilution method. It is about 2 ${\mu}m$ in diameter and has smooth surface. Organelles of nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondrion, Golgi body, pyrenoids, vacuoles and lipid bodies are identified. Pigments are composed of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, ${\beta}$-carotene and other xanthophylls. Based on the ultrastructural features and pigment composition, it may belong to chlorococcalean picoplankton.

  • Proprioception can be defined as a specialized variation of touch that encompasses the sensation of joint movement(kinesthesia) and joint position(static joint position sense). Several types of joint and muscular mechanoreceptors provide proprioceptive information for joint stability. Joint mechanoreceptors have been classified into four types based of activation characteristics : Ruffini endings, Pacinian corpuscles, Golgi tendon organlike endings, free nerve endings. The paper review the morphology, distrubution, function of mechanoreceptors in shoulder joint.

  • Oogenesis process of ovary produces a lot of undifferentiated cells. Especially, the radiation exposure of early immature cells in the process of growth to oocyte causes serious disabilities. This study examined the radiation damage mechanism of undifferentiated cells and organelles in oogenesis process, and the radioprotection after injection of alliin. The ultrastructure after 7Gy X-ray irradiation on the white rat was observed in the experiment. The results is as follows. It was observed that the nucleus membrane of an oogonium was damaged and vacuolated in the several parts after 15 days of irradiation. The damage of mitochondria membrane and flow in cytoplasm after 20 and 30 days was found in the oogonium. After 40 days observation, peroxidation of fat droplets was found and organelles were tangled each other in ovary tissue. The partial damage of nuclear membrane in oogonium past 15 days after injection of alliin was found, but decreased remarkably. Mitochondria, Golgi body, and rough endoplasmic reticulum were also clearly observed, therefore, radioprotection effects in alliin was confirmed partially.

  • The study on the nerve cells in the subesophageal ganglion of 5-day-old cabbage butterfly, Pieris rapae L., was performed to observe their ultrastructures and classify them on the basis of the differences in size, shape and relative distribution of cell organelles. 1. Type I neurons: These cells are neurosecretory granules ranging 100 to 300 nm in size. 2. Type II neurons: As giant neurons averaging 25 to $30{\mu}m$ in size, such as mitochondria and Golgi apparatus. 3. Type III neurons: These spindle-shaped cells range 9 to $15{\mu}m$ in width. 4. Type IV neurons: These cells have a range of diameter from 12 to $16 {\mu}m$. The cells are abundantly observed in the subesophageal ganglion. 5. Type V neurons: These cells are very small nerve cells with 4.5 to $8.0{\mu}m$ in size and have a prominent nucleus.

  • Prolactin has been reported to be present in the tear film of humans and prolactin-like immunoreactivity has been detected by immunofluorescence in acinar cells of the lacrimal glands of humans and rats. The present study was aimed at clarifying the intracellular distribution of the prolactin-like immunoreactivity, using the electron microscope immunogold technique. The lacrimal gland acinar cells have two types of secretory granules: 1) Secretory granules containing flocculent materials irregularly shaped and are often coalesced. 2) Secretory granules are fairly round and contain homogenous materials of a moderate electron density. The density of the granular content varies even within a single cell. We found prolactin-like reactivity in secretory granules, some smaller cytosolic vesicles, Golgi cisternae and nuclei in acinar cells from intact glands of rat. Our present results are consistent with the conclusion that prolactin is present in lacrimal cells. The presence of prolactin reactivity in the nucleus suggests that prolactin may be a regulatory factor modulating gene expression.

  • In order to investigate the spermiogenesis of the Korean Native Jin-do dog, the tissue sampled from the testis and the epididymis of matured dog were conventionally prepared as thin sections. And then these sections were observed under a transmission electron microscope. Based on the development of various permanent organelle and certain transient structures, the spermiogenesis of the dog could be divided into four major phases: Golgi, cap, acrosome and maturation; and these phases had been futher subdivided into seven stages. In the maturatin phase, the karyoplasm has been condensed completely and the nucleus eleongated as the movement of the unclear ring. The equatorial segment has notable waist-form at the late acrosomal stage. In the cross section of the tail, it shows a typicl 9+9+2 pattern of the axial fiber bundle condisting of the dense fibers, the inner fibers, and a central pair. The dense fiber number 1, 5, 6, and 9 were larger in diameter than the rest of the dense fibers.

  • A histochemical and ultrastructural study on the stomach epithelium of a land snail Nesiohelix samarangae was carried out during the period of June 1996 to May 1997. The stomach epithelium is simple columnar dpithelium and is consisted of three types of columnar cells, Type 1 cell which is majority in number has a brush border with microvilli on the free surface of the cell and contains numerous secretory granules supposed to be neutral mucopolysaccharide. Type 2 cell, elongated conical in shape. is rarely found in the dpithelium. This cell also has a brush border with microvilli on its free surface and contains well developed rough surfaced endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, and secretory granules in various electron densities. This cell seems to produce both of acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides. Type 3 cell, which is morphologically similar to the Type 1 cell, has microvili and cilia on the free surface and exists in group only in the limited regions of the stomach.

  • Secretory ducts in the stem of Panax ginseng seedlings are observed with light and electron microscopes to clarify development of the epithelial cells of secretory ducts. Secretory duct initial cell is developed from procambial cell which originated from initial cell is differentiated into ipithelial cell ofsecretory ducts. Intercellular space between the epithelial cells are gradually expanded and differentiated into duct lumen. Disintegrations of epithelial cells occur throughout all the stages of development. The cytoplasm of epithelial cells darken and the epithelial cell wall are lysed, preceding their disintegraton. In the epithelial cell organelles are scattered in the cytoplasm. Development of vcuoles are sparse at the early stage. Starch grains decreased gradually, while lipid droplets increased. Free ribosomes are distributed throughout the cytoplasm and secretory vesicles which originated from rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex are fused with the plasmalemma. These suggest that the cellular metabolism is active. Microtubules and plasmodesmata are typically observed in the thickened epithelial cell wall. Secretions are accumulated in duct lumen.
